Question number 2: high number on number plate is a sign of import? For example 08 d Xxxxxx?
Over 120000 would be an import.

The last reg issued for D in 08 was 69,800 odd. So anything after that would be guaranteed imported. in 08 ALOT of cars were imported so i'd imagine alot of cars previous to that 69,000 (esp. diesels) would be imports, too.

Ill be fitting an outer cv boot soon but very little grease came with it. Should it be filled with grease or just applied around the joint? Can i pack some normal grease in there?

Another one lads! ( I know you are sick of me! )

If you buy a uk car that is already here, how do you get on about vrting it and changing ownership? I know that of you buy car in uk, you got only 1 day to change plates etc.
Then again, insurance? Will i be able to put uk plate car on my insurance untill I sort out vrt?

I don't know how true this is but there was talk about it being illegal to sell an unregistered car here. Once you bought it, you had to VRT it etc. before you could legally sell it on.

You have to get the V5 cert I think, fill it out and go to your nearest NCT centre to VRT the car.

Had to look into this myself recently:

In order to register an unregistered vehicle (or one previously registered outside the State) you must make an appointment with the NCTS within 7 days of its entry into the State to have a pre-registration examination of the vehicle carried out. You must complete the registration process and pay VRT at the NCTS Centre within 30 days of the arrival of the vehicle in the State.

My 8er is still up on blocks so to speak. He's having a go at the DK motors. But a new coil has brought it back to life along with a few other things.

I am sreiously tempted to keep it and sell the M5

I'm not a man for tearing up the tarmac and so the M is wasted on me a bit. When I last drove the 8er a few weeks ago I loved being in it and I knew that I would never forgive myself if I sold it.

I'm now leaning towards using the cash from the M5 to fix the paint up and buy parts to rebuild the rear suspension and do a few other things that I've wanted to do with it, maybe even that Engl exhaust.

That 406 is screaming keep me too which would tick the comfy/econo/bangernomic box for me when I couldn't be ar5ed with the Esty but needed a work horse.

Mind me asking how many cars you got E39? I know you have the M5 and 8-Series, you got much else? :D

Nothing worth mentioning. An Estima (with a 19" flip down screen) for the snappers and now also the 406.

I feel a yank tank coming on though :D

(edit: the original of the species E39 530D has left the building... along with the OH owner.... that car has since died I hear, couldn't live without me)

The brother is looking at 1.9tdi passats (PD I think) c. 2005. will have about 100-120k miles on it.

Is there anything to be worried about with them?

    Pretty much everything?

I have seen so many cheap passats lately. All of the new shaped ones are really damn cheap! Wouldn't that be the reason for all those problems? That injector issue?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,234 ✭✭✭Ardennes1944

the 1.9 did not give half as much trouble as the 2.0.

I'm not 100% sure but I think it is but with a different power output. 105bhp IIRC

I know very little about the petrol ones but the TFSI would be the turbo/boosted petrol engines.

I am looking for a 7 seater second hand as I have 5 grandkids and take them out a fair bit. I would like to be able to take them all out together.
Any suggestions and price estimates for say a 06, 07 or 08. It needs to be a good safe car. Thanks.
