Door to door religion peddlers

I've just had 2 black gentlemen at my door trying to sell me religion. Now I've got nothing against religion although I'm not religious. But it bugs me that I have foreigners of any race, colour or creed calling to my home trying to save me or whatever it is they want. I didn't answer the door but I could hear them at the next door neighbours. Ireland exported Christianity, I really don't think we need it sold back to us.

I get Jehovas (sic?) now and then there is a commune of them around here somewhere.

I just say things like "sorry I am setting up my own religion, Gay Witches for Abortion, would you be interested?"

Usually sees them off fast enough
to be fair my motivation is the tax free status that setting up a religion enjoys

I find your post really confusing, whether its supposed to be sarcasm or geniunely agrieved that someone is trying to sell you religion which you feel you gave them in the first place :confused:

My main pet peeve with what you have said there is, actually anyone coming to my doorstep selling in general and not getting the hint when you say you are not interested.

Was the religion they were selling counterfeit?

We welcome people to the country, but why the fook would we welcome someone trying to sell us something we don't want into the house?

My TV is always trying to sell me Cillit Bang. The man is really shouty and he keeps shouting "bang!".

Some neighbours of mine, otherwise lovely people, from Nigeria do the same thing. In many African countries but particularly Nigeria religion is big business, with millionaire preachers in every city.

It hasn't quite sunk in that the population in Ireland are either too well educated/wealthy or too invested in Catholicism for that to work here, but they're still trying to set up shop. There used to be a man from the same area who'd stand on a soap box in Shop Street in Galway shouting religious passages - same operation.

They aren't badly off themselves either, I was handed a plush 150 page full colour magazine style booklet about their scheme. Costs a few bucks to mass produce them yokes.

So you would give someone the time of day to listen to something that you think is nonsense as long as they're Irish?

You have turned the tables and tried to sell them sex. Let's see how committed they are, and how much of an angry kitten you are ;)

What if they were Irish? Would you be equally as annoyed?

I don't want anything sold to me on my doorstep. I find it arrogant of people coming to a country, any country and trying to persuade people to join their religion. I would be annoyed if an Irish person tried to sell me religion. Why are you making the assumption that by mentioning the fact that they are black makes me biased? Jesus you're a bit presumptuous.

They are not trying to sell you something unless you are engaged in a transaction where they get some form of payment from you.

I get annoyed with the travellers who keep coming around trying to sell carpet

So it is nothing to do with race, colour or creed but because they were foreigners? Your statement is really strange.

I am confused as to what your problem is. Is it that you don't like people trying to "sell you religion" (whatever that means), or you don't like foreigners trying to sell you religion?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 853 ✭✭✭toexpress

Did you hand over the cash in the shop? Really?

I mean get a grip none of us like this nonsense, I can't think of a single person that I know who looks forward to getting one of those knocks at the door but it happens and we deal with it do you really need to display your bigotry for all to see because of it. That's what they believe in, they are entitled to those beliefs and if it offends you then that is your issue not theirs. All you have to do is say "I am not interested and please do not cross the boundary of my property ever again"

    That's the end of it

What a really weird rant you are on!

Why do you assume they could not have bought those nice clothes themselves? You know, with money....they you know...earned?

haha....you are cracking me up with your little rant. Keep going.

I find it arrogant of anyone to go door to door trying to convert people to their religion. I suppose it does bug me more to have a foreigner knock on my my door to do so.

You didn't qualify your statement until now by including Irish people in it. If they're nationality and their colour wasn't important then why mention it in the first place?

Why it's you and me of course. You should have demanded they remove them. Are you blonde? Because it's better if you are, but not essential. YouPorn users aren't fussy.

Bigotry? Did you get out of bed on the self righteous twaddle side of the bed this morning? I'm expressing an opinion, I have that right and not wanting religion brought to my home by a stranger or anyone else for that matter, does not make me a bigot.

No but mentioning the colour of their skin does.

I don't see what difference that makes. The people that call to me are Irish and they get the same response as if they were Nigerian or any other nationality.
to be fair this response varies depending on my mood and I tend to be a moody type

You got two well hung black lads at the door on international womens' day, I think you should be grateful. Just saying.

eh....you mentioned that because these people were apparently foreigners (and you also mentioned they were black for good measure) you were more annoyed at them entering your property and trying to sell you religion, than you would have been if they were Irish.

So look up the definition of bigot their love, you might be surprised.

Edit - I will quote you again for good measure:

I was describing what happened. Jesus, good old Ireland gotta jump on anything that could start a race row. Until people stop trying to put a negative slant on somebody mentioning colour there will never be racial equality.

answer the door with a meat cleaver and a blood stained shirt.... then smile and shout back to your partner "dear, oh look some fresh meat has arrived at the door for us" then look at the religion peddlars with a menacing grin

Now you are perhaps beginning to understand how the Africans felt when white people turned up with a Bible in one hand and a shovel in the other (the shovel was to dig out the gold and other valuable resources while the natives were distracted by the book of fairy tales and looking up at the sky to try and see that place the missionaries were talking about).

Does it not bug you also when Irish people turn up on your doorstep trying to sell you some kind of juju? :D

Ireland didn't export Christianity, which originated in the Middle East. We actually imported it, which was a major mistake, although we later started exporting its derivatives.:(

Incidentally, I had a visit from a couple of Jehovah's Witness women last week, first time for years that any purveyors of religion have come near me. I just told them I was originally from Ireland and had gotten quite enough of religion there, and they politely left without trying to argue. One of them was a bit of all right as well, but the other a right old boot.

What annoyed me love, is the arrogance of anybody who feels they have the right to go to someones home and try to convert them. The fact that they are foreigners is offensive in the sense that it, in my opinion, it shows even greater arrogance.

No I dont think it does show greater arrogance. It means your just upset more because your less tolerant to non nationals or something.

I do agree that someone who thinks going to a persons house and trying to convert them is a good way to spend an afternoon is a pig ignorant deluded asshole. But skin color and nationality doent make it any worse. They are all just idiots.

If you poured some whiskey for them, threw some sherbet on the table and asked them to do a line, and whipped your lad out they'd be gone, and because it's not public, it wouldn't be a crime (I don't think anyway, but don't quote me on that to the Gardaí)
