don't suppose you've looked at the US servers then yet, so many planes in the air, there's constant collision deaths, not many libs but plenty of esfs, though i will say, coordinated fire from the AA launcher, will clear the skies pretty quickly, racked up 30 mossie kills and a ton of assists last night with a 3 man fire team, merely starting to lock on last night was enough to send em running....

    [edit]
I will say the only reason we got so many kills last night was just plain down to the lack of fear from lock ons, mossie would just sit there, drop flares to break the lock, and continue pelting the ground troops with rockets. We just gave them the fear back, by letting em waste flares then pelting em with rockets

Its nice when people get used to their overpoweredness and you pop them. But the thing is that there was more than one person shooting at them and they were cocky, a smart pilot would have bugged out and come in from another angle .... if three mossies had been working together they would probably have racked up far more kills .....but ESF's are so OP that people dont need to work together

Yeah, I'ld agree with that, flares or not I don't sit around while getting lock on warnings, those missiles hurt if if they hit you...

But it was fun clearing the skies last night, 3 rockets will kill a mossie
pretty much lock on, wait for em to drop flares, lock on again and fire.

By the end of last night there were about 20 other vs with AA launchers.... "Poor aircraft" is all I'll say.

I gave it a go last night.

Lot of fun, if a little intimidating to start. Well worth watching some of the "getting started" vids before diving in.

The map is freaking huge, and there are often so many players that the feeling of being in a real war is just amazing. You'll see squadrons of fighter planes zooming off to one battlefront while tanks are pounding a base in front of you while squads of ground troops move in to secure buildings. Lot of stuff going on, but after a while you can get used to it and tune out stuff that's not immediately important.

I'm hoping to join a few friends some night this week on Miller. They've been having immense amounts of fun flying about in gunships and shelling things from a great height.

60 x 60km size and up to 6000 players (2k each side) per map which is why PS2 is so damn great (that and I get to fire disco balls at the baddies!) :D

I didn't know the precise numbers, but that is pretty damned impressive.

There was a situation last night where I was about to get shot for the rather silly move of chasing someone too far and being left out in the open, when wreckage from a dogfight above me landed between me and the enemy, saving my skin and letting me get the drop on him instead. Moments like that where you feel part of something much bigger are just marvellous. You will not be forgotten, brave unknown gunship pilot. :(

60 square km maps and up to 6000 players simultaneously??? What sort of servers do they run these games and who pays for it if the game is free???? Having those huge battles on screen must be pretty demanding for your PC. What kind of spec PCs are you guys playing this on?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31,967 ✭✭✭✭Sarky

Well I'm impressed enough with the game that I'll be throwing a few bob their way come payday. I gather you can spend money to customise your uniform, vehicles and possibly even a whole squad outfit. I'm pretty sure that while you can unlock all the weapons and improvements with XP, you can also unlock them with cash a bit faster.

It seems to be working well enough with Tribes, so I'd imagine the Planetside 2 folks are scraping by at least.

2000 players altogether, I'm nearly sure.

Well as mentioned above, people can pay to unlock stuff quicker if they wish. They can also pay for camos for weapons/vehicles, which is the only way you can unlock them. I have seen plenty of people with camos already, which means people are spending money on it.

Yeah I'm pretty sure its 2000 players per continent, so 6000 overall per server.

    666 players on each side
so it's 666 vs 666 vs 666 so yeah pretty ground breaking.

1 map is over 60km² with massive bases dotted around it
it's larger than the likes of Skyrim and not so far off the size of Guild Wars 2
but this is only 1 map in Planetside 2, more maps will be added and you can only imagine what they can do when they can play around with this sort of scale, even talk of moon and space battles and urban city maps, will be unreal!

Have to say, urban maps would be unreal...with skyscrapers and capture points on different levels of different buildings across a massive city.

closest to that would be ammerish.... and there are 3 maps with a 2k player cap on each

Hopefully one of the new continents will be urban as that would be awesome.

I am playing fairly smooth on an older system.

    4 gigs Ram
Geforce 8800gtx with 765 mb ram
    dual core 2.93 ghz

Playing on low quality because although it plays well on max, as soon as I get into the big battles it starts to stutter.

Plays fine on low though , and to be honest even the low settings looks awesome. There is an option to lower the render quality to further improve performance but I keep it on 100% as it looks pretty bad on anything less.

I am happy enough with how it's running and it looks fantastic.

This game is amazing so far. I love being a gunship gunner! I even got the old wing-man joystick out and am gonna go try out my pilot skills with it now!

This is a game where you need people you know in your squad. It's bloody frustrating trying to organise randomers to do anything, and people just spend so much time running around like headless chickens.

It's a good game but it runs like **** for me. Get 50-60 fps on my own but in a battle for a biosphere I get around 20fps average which is really disappointing for my specs (below). Waiting till they optimize it more before I invest anything into it.

    Phenom II x4 965 @ 3.8 Ghz
    8 GB DDR3 RAM
    7870 (also overclocked)

Can anyone advise on the Joystick settings?

Should I sign Role or Yaw to the left right?

How do you guys strafe a target? I have been using the Ascend key whilst tilting the nose down and doing runs but It's hard to bug out when I start getting hit with role and Yaw not being mixed like in some flight games.

How do you pilots set your flight sticks up for this game?

This game is pretty impressive. I'm playing on medium settings with high fps even big tank battles with a lot of explosions. I was dieing a lot at the start because I would wander into a huge and just stare in awe and then get shot. But eventually I got used to it and managed to get a few kills. Tanks and air vehicles are pretty easy to control, almost the same as battlefield. It would be way more enjoyable playing as part of a squad though, if anyone wants to set up a squad they can add me on steam: http://steamcommunity.com/id/Quixoticelixer I have teamspeak and a headset and all that crap.

Edit: atm I'm on Cobalt server playing as New Conglomerate.

From what I'm seeing in the official forums many people are complaining about the flight controls. Roll is far far to twitchy. I've tried all day yesterday to fly with a joystick but have gone back to the mouse. It's inifitely better at this time imo.

Yeah after trying for ages myself I think I will wait for them to fix this and go back to being a ground unit for now. Very frustrating trying to fly with a stick. Tweaked the settings a lot and still couldn't get it right. Played as a sniper last night and had infinitely more fun and success.

Get a real graphic card and it will work :p

Seriously though the problem is the gfx drivers by the sound of it; many AMD graphic card users got problem but going back a page or two there was posted the new version to run that helps fix it.

Dont know if it was ment by them, but i bought something with SC last night for my reaver, and i didnt get the item so i opened a ticket ( they got back to me REALLY quickly). They said the issue had been resolved and i had been refunded my station cash, went to purchase the item again and it says a already have it and i still got my station cash! Score:D:D

basicly whats been happening with the station cash purchases, when you buy something, you need to log out and in again to get it

Which I only learned after buying 3 Burster arms :o (the refund was quickly dealt with though to SoE's credit).

Btw, what are people saving/spending certs on so far?

Personally I've bought 1 point in each class Nano weave (+10% health for 1 cert? Yes please!), 1 in Healing and Repair (1 cert each), 2 points on my light assault jetpack (11 certs) to get more fuel and 1 point on my MAX for first point of regeneration (80 certs but a life saver for those odd pot shots etc. you get hit with). Currently I'm saving up for the 2x 500 certs on Burster arms to double loaded ammo and after that I'll drop a few points into Ammo cannisters to carry more flak shots.

After that I'm undecided honestly; I'm not a fan of the sights as they throw me off usually and I'm not speccing into my Mag just yet.

Really think the c4 for LA is way overpriced, 200 for the first brick, 500 for the second. I only bothered unlocking it yesterday as I missed it to damn much! and so far have destroyed a lot of lightenings, a couple of sundies and a parked gal. So it has payed off, but still!

Is the nano really that much? thought they nerfed it since beta.

Get the saron for the mag, first thing you should get. Best secondary weapon ever. If you have a decent gunner you can chew through enemy tanks. Also get something for the lightening, anything is better than the default crapcannon it has.

Been playing LA almost all the time, but only really dropped certs into c4 and jetpack. Using the nova for the past few days, and it is amazing, 2 shots any class, 3 for HA. Not sure about a max :p The main problem with it is that it only holds 48 shots, which you burn through so quickly, probably going to invest in extended mag or whatever ammo cert I can for it.

the vx6-7 (something like that) is probably the best carbine, high fire rate and high damage, would highly recommend to get that.

Any class can buy C4, right?

No, just LA and medic unfortunately.

Is there much of a difference between Light Assault classes from each empire?

First point (1 cert) is 10%, second is 12.5% for 10 points, third is 15% so one point in and leave it until you're ready to go 4 points (20%) basically :)
