Watched The Lobster. Bizarre movie but very enjoyable. The off-beat/dead-pan humour was perfect, particularly in the first half while it's set in the hotel. It wobbles a bit as it moves to the forest (the secret language was hilarious though) and I'm a bit unsure about the way the ended it with the
blindness. Though the abrupt ending leaves you wondering about their fate.
I read it as he was going to blind himself.

    Finally finished Fargo season 2

It's very impressive. I really enjoyed the fact that it seemed to give all of these great characters an equal amount of screen time. Sometimes you end up with too many characters fighting for centre stage but I thought they managed it really well here.

Billy Bob Thornton set extremely high standards with his S1 performance and I don't quite feel any of the characters in S2 quite reached that height. It's a shame that the last episode petered out to a bit of an anti-climax.

Bokeem Woodbine & Kirsten Dunst were the stand out performers for me. Possibly the greatest performance of KD's career to date?

Agree about Dunst, she was good all through the series but especially in the last few episodes, the scenes in the cabin in particular.

Yeah, I took it that way. He was building himself up to it (and creating tension for the audience, I was squirming in my chair watching it!). There was nothing to indicate that he wouldn't do it or that he'd back out of it, so not sure what's there to indicate he didn't do it.

Finished it last night myself, was really impressed by it, I think I actually preferred it to season 1 in an lot of ways. I love how they've left it open to Tie in elements to another season, I could sure go for seeing the evolution of Hannzi or even the further exploits of the Kansas city crew. Also - Ted Danson is great!

    Trophy Kids

Documentary about parents pushing their kids to succeed in golf, basketall, tennis and football. Very good, but sad too. Some serious control freak parents in this. What sort of moron do you have to be - even out of earshot - to call your 8 year old daughter a 'stupid bitch'?

    Cartel Land

Insightful documentary into some of what's going on in Mexico. Basically, locals have become fed up with the absence of the rule of law and taken matters into their own hands, setting up Autodefensas. They have pushed the cartel back in some areas, though not without upsetting people they claim to be working on behalf of. There are a few photos of decapitated heads, etc, but I think the most difficult part for me was when the father was being taken away and his daughter, probably no more than 12, threatened to kill herself. On the US side there's the local militia, Arizona Border Recon, who are equally frustrated with their respective government and live on a diet of Fox News. They don't get a huge amount of screen time, really. Back on the Mexican side, it's a medical surgeon who heads up the Autodefensas, until the inevitable fracturing.

    Worth a watch.

I'm rediscovering the brilliance of Philip Seymour Hoffman. Netflix has these to offer and I'd definitely recommend Most Wanted Man for his performance if nothing else. How he carries himself, the way he stands, his gait, he comes off as a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders.

It's based on a John Le Carré novel and directed by Anton Corbijn. It's set in Berlin and Hoffman plays a spy, the plot involves Muslim terrorist fears etc etc

Did you watch Holidays? It's also partly filmed in Ireland, I think its six short films based on different holidays throughout the year.

    Very strange all together.

Yeah watched that one last night, had good and bad stories, some of them being more dark comedy than horror.

Father's Day was my favourite (except for the ending), beautifully shot, tension building, great premise.

I found it interesting that the stories were all about women. Even the ones where men appeared to be the protagonist, the women turned out to be the story. Anyone know if that was done on purpose?

Watching Stranger Things. Very good. Wouldn't be the biggest fan of this kind of horror shows, but have binged nearly all of it over 2 days.

So one of the most interesting films of the year arrived on American netflix recently.

The Tribe a 2 hour Ukraine film that uses only sign language for communication and no spoken dialogue or subtitles for communication.

A young kid basically transfers and winds up with a group of criminals and well unsurprisingly its very dark.

Its something I can understand people not wanting to watch (I kept finding other things to do when I considered many a night to watch it!) and then hating when they do, but I enjoyed as did many as it popped up in a few best of's in this forum.

Finished season 1 of 'Spotless' last night, a show about a guy who runs a cleaning service specialising in crime scenes. Inevitably he falls in with the wrong crowd.

    worth checking out.

How to train your dragon - finally on Netfilx! Added to the week's watch list.

Watched The Lobster last night - can't believe it only got 2 stars on the Netfilx rating! I thought it was excellent. Every single character emotionally stunted. And the voiceover like an Inter Cert essay!

Watched Only the Dead, the documentary about the journalist Michael Ware's experiences in Iraq during the war. Pretty harrowing stuff and definitely not one for the squeamish or anyone who has a problem seeing people dying or dear bodies. The last 5 minutes are particularly grim and make the viewer feel almost complicit in what is going on through the voyeuristic nature of what is shown. It's a powerful film and one that nearly makes you feel shell-shocked by the time it finishes. Days after watching it I'm still thinking about it.

Ya agree it's very eye opening. it interesting to get an insight into the mind of a suicide bomber as well. its unbelievable how for them its like going out to work or something wave goodbye to their comrades and then go on your way to blow yourself up.

Ride Along and Noah are leaving sometime next week. Do the more popular release expire quicker than the lesser know movies as they were only added back in February.

All depends. The Hobbit and a couple of the Marvel films are always there.

Louis CK live at the Comedy Store was added with nary a fuss at the weekend. Top drawer comedy as always. Well worth a watch.
