OP, although hares are still in season and can be lawfully shot with a shotgun in daylight hours it would indeed be putting people's mind at ease if you explained what you wanted them for.

It is illegal to hunt or shoot hares in ireland full stop day or night and carries a hefty fine or loss of licence .Be very careful what you are posting lads .Irish hares are not classed as vermin like rabbits and are protected in law .If you are hunting them remember a shut mouth catches no flies .

I'm afraid you're talking out your hole there my good man. The season for hares runs from the 26th of September to the 28th of February. Check the hunting laws and seasons thread if you don't believe me

    From "Exploring Irish Mammals":
"[The Irish Hare] is a protected species in the Republic of Ireland an in Northern Ireland, but it is also classified as a game or quarry species and may be hunted, under licence issued by Duchas The Heritage Service), during the open season. This usually extends from the last week of September to the end of February. Hunting hares is totally prohibited , however, in the vicinity of Wexford Wildfowl Reserve. Hares may also be captured, during the hunting season, for coursing by muzzled greyhounds in accordance with the rules of the Irish coursing Club. A specific licence is required to hunt hares outside the hunting season. The Irish hare is listed in the Irish Red Data Book as internationally important and in Apppendix 2 of the Bern Convention as a protected species, and in Annex 5 of the Habitat Directive as a species which may be exploited but not to the extent that its favourable conservation status is compromised"

Yeah there is season but only with special licence from Duchas which is nearly impossible to get .My point is if you dont have special licence to kill them dont talk openly about it thats all .

Section 27 and 28 of the 1976 Wildlife act (Also 24, 25, 26 & 29) allow for anyone possessing a firearms licenses to hunt and kill and protected wild mammal during the open season for that mammal.

The old whte licenses used to have this authorisation printed on them however the new "credit card" licenses do not. The authorisation however was confirmed in 2010 when the NARGC asked for clarification on the position of the Minister in relation to the absence of this authorisation on the new licenses.

So in short you can hunt Hares, in season once you possess a firearms license.

Apologies to the OP if they are genuine but I am a Bit dubious of an account with 2 posts looking for a hare in the biggest month of the Irish coursing calender . . . next thing we'd see it on an Anti protest.

And even with that it's ridiculously easy, too easy almost.

When they mention special licence from Dúchas for hunting they mean hunting with beagles.....not hunting with a shotgun.

OK I think people are being a bit unfair here the OP only posted @ 5:30 yesterday & may well have a valid reason for asking for a hare...... We have now confirmed that it's not illegal to shoot a hare & I’m sure if the OP hasn’t been frightened off & does have a valid enough reason for needing one there are many friendly people on this very board that will help her in acquiring one so maybe we should give it a rest with the “troll, suspicious post, should be deleted” etc and give the OP a chance to respond..........I know i only check this site at most once a day so maybe the op is in the same position now let’s just wait and see..........

Firstly Penelope Jane, welcome to the forum.

The reason you are being met with such skepticism is because this is not the first time this forum, nor shooters as a whole have been "used".

We have had photos posted by us altered by anti hunting groups to show axes, hurls, etc as though these items were used to kill the animal in the picture rather than the firearm that actually was used.

Also with the very recent discussion about a ban on hare coursing it would not be beyond belief to think that such tactics would be used to get a dead Hare, pose it such a way to show a cruel act.

Its terrible to have to be so "distrustful" of people, but once bitten and all that. Add all the above to the fact your account is new, and you've no "history". The comments in this thread are not directed towards you personally, but stem from previous incidents.

All that being said if you are genuine in your request then you will not find a better group of people to help you.

So to all please adhere to rule one of the forum.

    hi ,
well thanks Ezridax, yes i am new and i thought this was the best place to put the question out there.I am still eager to find out where i can get 2 hares from, if it means contacting someone outside of dublin or other such places one may think of, it is purely for personal artistic use and am not here to upset anyone,
    cheers
and if anyone knows any leads, please let me know!

Just throwing it out there is there any chance a rabbit might work if it is for a scene in a short film. I suppose you have thought of it but there would be any amount of people on here who could get you as many rabbits as you wanted. A lot of hunters do not shoot hares not in my area anyway.

For your own sake, i'd go with a rabbit. See if you cannot get a big one, but go with a rabbit.

Look at the re-action here when asking about a Hare so imagine what re-action you might get if someone starts to moan about your picture/video containing a Hare.

Less grief, and much easier to get, ecause as lads have said not alot of people actually shoot Hares.

I'll pass on staring in 'Rabbit Porn'.

What about playboy bunnies if the hunter was seen to be emerging from the forrest dragging to 'live' playboy bunnies, that would be a bit more like it.

How about just skipping filming it in the first place, its only going to depict hunters in a poor light anyway.

I see no wrong in a rabbit for the scene.
If you could commit to eating it also when your done you'd have loads of friends on here ;)
Perhaps a cooking scene for authenticity :pac: :pac:
