So can any of the experienced lads say how the outlook is looking?
Is this "glut" of cattle going to ease off or are these the numbers going through for a long time?

Calling all heifer fattening experts, would another month see these heifers right for the factory?

All opinions/suggestions good bad or in different welcome.

I would feed on for another 2 months Muckit unless you need to get rid of them. Give them 5lb rolled barley / day for the last 6 weeks to get adequate fat cover on them

One is 28 mths, the others are 25mths. Ya reckon they'd need that much meal on good grass this time of year? I suppose 2.5kg not massive amount.

    Thanks for pointers lads.

from experience I wouldn't feed rolled barley or any non palatable straight feed at grass, they need something tasty or else intakes wont be equal for each animal

barley and a sprinkle of molasses is what you need, or else just nuts, no higher than 14 percent protein

Are you in a hurry to finish, with amount of cattle going into factory at present I be letting cattle carry as long as possible

when the 28 month old one is ready don't just kill them young ones and all to make up a load,

my biggest mistakes have been letting the last two of a bunch for the kill just because the rest of the bunch were being hauled away to factory and they not being fit

5lb of barley isnt going to imbalance them that much and believe me they will all eat their fair share. Have seen cattle to turn their noses quicker to nuts than rolled barley. [ so long as its not riddled with popcorn]

When is the amount going to get smaller?

Factories are going to be in the driving seat until this time next year or maybe even beyond I have been told by a source who would I wouldn't ever bet against to be honest. Finishers need to put brakes on at the ring.

I've been thinking as much myself.

The kill figures say different. when you hear factory agents talking like that then the opposite is sure to happen

    I didn't say factory agent.

    I didn't say factory agent.

I know you did not but this spin usually from factory's and tjherr agent's. We are only 5months into year over 70k cattle extra killed compared to last year. There is about 100k extra compared to last year but there will less bulls and there is some going out live.

The kill level cannot continue at present level much longer and if it dose there will be a way lower kill towards year end

Why do you think this? (Not a dig. Just a question)

Cattle locally backed up for next 2 to 3 weeks that is all I can tell you with certainty with regard to the backlog.

Henry burns reported today that cattle price is under pressure in England/wales and farmers are waiting up to two weeks to get cattle killed even over there

Why do you think this? (Not a dig. Just a question)

CMMS at start of year showed 100K extra cattle in kill age group this year. So far from Jan-now we have killed 68K extra cattle. We are killing slightly over 3K/week extra at present so gap closing fast ( will be over 70K as of last friday IFJ figures are a week in arrears). That leaves 30K extra cattle in the system however as bulls are leaving system not to be replaced this will meant that there will not be 100K extra unless we kill alot of sub 2year old cattle late in the year that will present factory's with issue next year if it happens.

If kill keep going as is (3K extra/week) by end of June 85K of the 100k gone, even if kill gap drops 1K/month over 20K extra will be killed before from now to end of August.

That is why i say kill cannot keep going as is

Just to clarify its mainly calls in demand heavy O+ or better and young bulls maybe that tells its own story!

:D Well all I can say is its true that that the farmer buys in pounds while the factory buys in pennies. But sure buy away on the jerseys while they are plentiful lads!
