At that weight. Mart all day long.

yes dont dream of the factory at that age and weight. They would go well in the mart if they are nice quality

Few bullocks here in the 500kg to 550kg weight range. Never killed to factory and just wondering which would be the best option. All Feb 17 cattle. Will hold for another 3 or 4 weeks yet I think. Advice? Mart or factory?

More than likly they are Mart cattle as they have not been fed. What will they make in the mart, 1.6/kg????. The lighter ones would need 5kg's for at least 8 weeks and need to be squarish. Friesian bullock's killing 280kgs at 3.55( a base of 3.8) would make 990 in the factory.

I killed a bunch a early last week ago at a base of 3.85 average weight 281 kgs, one made the QA O=3-, 2XO-, a P+ and 2XP=. They were on 3kgs for 8 weeks so about 40-45 in ration. Not ecstatic but saw no point in feeding them until Christmas for maybe the same price. Have 10-12 more to go will shift another box of them in two weeks.

Depending on her grade, age and what feed she got could be anywhere between 53% and 60%
Killed a heifer here in May. She had carcass of 510kgs was 28 months and graded E-. She was approx 850 kgs live weight

Depending on the way she graded and fat score giving her a KO of 56% she have weighted 770kgs LW.

She graded U- 3- . She was just shy of 30mth.
Would 54-55% killout be more realistic?

I say around the 55% heifers will K/O better than bullocks, having said that she was 3- FS so you would lose bit on KO there as opposed to 4-, She was up near the 800kgs but maybe not quite at it. If she was weight fresh off the grass she be at the 800kg mark but if you weight her in a mart I would expect taht she would be 20-30kgs lighter when she had emptied out.

Some heifer. What sort of fat score did she make? I presume she was getting a good bit of meal all winter?

She was 3-. A serious heifer. Probably ate the guts of 2 ton of meal from housing to knifing. Found it hard to get enough fat cover on her to kill her as she was beginning get stale on the meal

Bob charles used always say stick local for the sake of 5c. And u know he was right.

    Tis the weight that pays.

What do you reckon is the weight loss on cattle travelling/waiting lets say 8/9 hours longer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,173 ✭✭✭✭Muckit

I'm no expert but sure would it not be stomach contents that would reduce? You don't get paid for that weight anyways.
Some lads swear that there's a difference between killing in morning vs bringing them in the night before. But I'm not convinced.

Well that's what i would have thought myself but just thought that's what your previous post was suggesting. The few I kill all travel between 80/100 miles as they are the factories the agent deals with.

I'd say cattle at a mart, due to stress, disturbance, lack of food and water etc., would lose in the region of 20/30Kg in the run of the day, (a man I know claimed 50Kg!) Look at what you'd save by buying cattle later in a sale!

I would assume something similar for cattle who'd have to travel a distance. I do all my killing locally, and usually transport them myself. You would want at least 10c+ I'd imagine to send them a few hours on a truck.

Well I have proof of that. I had stores cattle in the mart yesterday. I weighted them Saturday. Did the same with other cattle before so its not a once off. I was the last pen in the mart(Murphys law) had them in shed at 7 am and they went into the ring at 5.30pm. Most lost 20-30 kgs while one fella lost 40 kgs. I had another lad before losing 40 kg. Its an awful hit I tell ya.

The only caveat here is how well are the scales in the mart calibrated but I agree there is a lot of loss from farm to mart or factory and probably the main reason cattle are not weighed in the factory prior to slaughter.

The regulars around the ring would know fairly quick if the scales was off. Lots of them run cattle through the crush and weigh them when they get home.

Anyone killing cows this week, I'm hearing 290ish for O grades? Rs are a good bit better, seems to be a good market for good, well fleshed cows somewhere.

Saw culls in Kilkenny today over 500kg barely making €400.
