Apart from the guage is there much of a difference between the 66 and a 201?

66 has fuel injection, does not have vacuum brakes, slower operating speed to the 201's, ect ect.

If I remember correctly the 66 has a different gearing setup that allows it to haul more weight but limits speed to 75 mph, there is also an additional sub class 66-6 which is limited to 65 mph but can haul even more. The class 201 is more of a mixed traffic loco, it can haul less but can go 100mph.

All EMD 710's have fuel injectors. The 201's have a mechanical injector unit whereas the newer engines (post 95) such as a class 66 or 67 have an electrical unit fitted.

The 66 has a higher fuel capacity. It doesn't have vac brakes or HEP as far as I know.

The 66/9 is the newer low emission version.

I think it's also safe to say that the 201 cab with its proper desk layout is much more ergonomic than the horrible painful mess of the 66 cab.

66 is also heavier and have radial steering bogies while the 201 has flexicoil and yaw dampers

201 has US style dual driving positions

Vac brakes are pretty well essential for any freight work in Ireland

    Class 66 has a gross bhp of 3,300 , 201 lags behind with 3,200

The 66s also have a loud buzzer which sounds while the engine is being started. The 201s don't.

It's not so much to with over all HP but gearing ratios for and delivering the power for traction. A 201 generates 3,200hp max but 3,000hp gets to the motors, 200hp is lost to other factors. It can get to 100mph give or take but a 66 tops out at 75mph give to take.

Besides a single class 66 can haul more than even 2 201s together. The class 59, again at 3,200hp can haul way more than a 66.

    Correct,
I meant to include the word electronic to above.

Just saw 221 in Connolly Maintenance Sheds attached to a Mk3 generator van in Enterprise livery. Couldn't see if the rest of the Enterprise rake were attached in the shed.

Have the Mk3 structural issues been sorted then?

I was passed by a 201 and 3 (I think) EGVs on their way to Belfast yesterday around about 1.30pm close to lisburn. Perhaps they are being trialled again?

Amazing that they can run a non TPWS 201 to Belfast when they want to. Same last year when 082 hauled 2 EGVs to York Road.

221 worked an 1125 Connolly / York Road transfer with 4 Enterprise Mk3 Gen Vans. 221 then returned light engine to Dublin getting the Connolly crew back in time for tea :-)

Notice you took a shot of the new logo on the ICR's, looks good on them, do all coaches per set have it?

  • Site Banned Posts: 46 pointsman

No that was the only coach out of that set that had them...Although I'm sure Portlaoise will get round to doing the lot soon enough!

Guess what's back on Enterprise duty?! :-)

I couldn't see Enterprise as it passed by this morning, but thought it sounded unusually quiet. Got into Connolly and my suspicions were confirmed.

233 was held at York Gate with the empty stock off the 2050 ex Connolly (complete with EGV) whilst 112 left the depot running light to Adelaide. 112 later worked 3 Geismarr wagons to Bangor.

The reason NIR added "8" was to identify all rail vehicles as being NOT buses in the overall Translink records at the time. Thus, "Castle" and "80" class railcars also had 8 added. All fine and dandy until the CAF's appeared - now they have "3", "4", and "8" numbers in their lists...

As for the new European system, which we can be glad for, as it will ensure that an IE or NIR train is protected from straying into Moldova or Finland, I understand that heritage locos - e.g. the RPSI's - may also be allocated these numbers but do not have to carry them!

I suppose Downpatrick is exempt. But is it? I wonder. If the whole of Ireland, an island, is not exempt, then Downpatrick arguably shouldn't be either. In fact, it's more likely for an ex IE or NIR vehicle to go there, or in theory at least a Downpatrick vehicle go to the main system, than any of the above going to the UK or mainland Eurpoe!

The UIC number system is not European, it's world wide except for the USA.
