For 250e you couldn't go too far wrong! Paint looks fresh on her. NCT it and pass it on for a tidy profit!

    View2-16956590.jpeg

Lying up for years? Budget for wishbones, track rods, drop links, easily the price of the car. Maybe an exhaust if the tailbox is flaky. The rear arms are a pig to change

    But tidy looking indeed :)

So something upto 1.4 or so?

She's become quite the little enthusiast and wants something with more poke, so up as far as 1.6. I'll get in trouble for it but would look at cars up to 2L as well, if it was worth it. Autos are out as, as shocking as it may be, the little K11 has really given her a liking for shifting gears.

The main requirements for her are something reliable/economical/not overly large, while I'd like a little luxury/safety.

    . - I'm in Dublin regularly.

How much are you prepared to spend? - Less than 1500

How much are you prepared to lose after 8 months? - Very little, ideally bag a bargain I can sell around the same price

Petrol or diesel, or either? - Doesn't matter

Max engine size? (motor tax considerations....). - less than 2.4, but small engine would be grand.

How important (or not) is auto? - Not important at all but I like it.

Why do you want an estate? (family size, or load carrying etc). - Dog and need to keep rear seats clean for passengers

Would you consider an MPV? - Not really, too young!
The bold bits don't really match.

If you buy a banger over 2.0 (and probably even over 1.5), your sell-on audience shrinks very rapidly.

One of the main planks of bangernomics is that you do not expect anything more than scrap value when you are finished with it. If you do better than that, it's a bonus.

There are plenty of manual good bangernomics estates out there costing well under 1K. A lesser number of good autos. Autos are harder to sell on though (although as I said, selling on is a bonus anyway).

So, you can probably buy a better auto estate for less than an equivalent manual one, and the pain of walking away will be a bit less. Fuel costs will be slightly higher, as you know.

My advice would be to look for something with enough NCT for you (with a bit to spare if possible), and enough or almost enough tax too. Subtract the value of the tax, and the value to you of not having to do an NCT, and there you have the 'actual' cost of the car to you over the usage period.

    Off-topic a bit:

The c.c. tax rates are mad, especially in the non-linear increments that are there e.g. 999 c.c. versus 1099 c.c. There are plenty of other hiccups on the graph...
c.c. Year 6 mth 3 mth Arrears (Per Month)

    0000 - 1000 199 110 56 16.58

Noticed that about the tax yesterday.

My yoke is between 1600 and 11700, so she's taxed as a 1.7. But for me to buy a 1.8 and move into the 1700 to 1800 bracket, it'll cost me an extra €26 per quarter. But it's only €11 to go from 1.8 to 1.9, and only another tenner to move into the next bracket again!

    Mental.

Motorway (I think I'll start a new thread as I don't want to drag this off topic).

Now here's a nice little thing...

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4457280

    View2-16963823.jpeg

New NCT, Tax until April, all assorted belts etc done including water pump. Looks like a well minded little runner.

Buy it and run it for 9 months doing small mileage and run it through the NCT again see if it passes. If it does with small work, sell it on for more or less what you paid or just keep it for another year.

Ultimate bangernomics IMO and it's not a sh1tbox car either...:)

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Fab little cars the sportings. Their road holding / chassis is up there with much more expensive hot hatches a full class up :)

Is 112k miles not a lot of mileage for a little 1.3?

    13 years old so it averaged c. 8500 a year - I've done 7000 in the last 4 months ;)

Compared to say, an underpowered 1.4 in something as heavy as a Golf or a Focus?

I also have 7000 miles done in my Alfa the last four months and that hasn't completely collapsed so this Fiat with it's history and recent work should be fine!:D

They're a cracking little engine, the 16v FIRE.

112k miles is nothing to them once properly maintained. Coolant changes and monitoring of the cooling system ensure that the HG is kept happy :)

Needless to say, we have a good few of those engines here with higher miles than that on them ;)

If it was a manual it'd probably be priced closer to 2k ;)

Anyway, this probably doesn't belong here BUT...
    2004 gs300 €2950
    Tax 12/12
    Nct 06/14

The tax paid would bring it into bangernomics budget. I'd jump at this if I had the cash :(
