Much of a muchness I reckon as you say, except for the motor tax and the increased fuel costs.

Wonder what it needs for a test. If its 20 quid of rubber bushings in the motor factors and a couple of hours labour then this is a cheap car .

Not gonna start down this road again, if you honestly think that the cars on here are cost effective then more power to ya, but from what i've seen on here a alfa 156 with no nct is better value than a small Japanese hatchback with nct and some tax that gets sneered at.

AFAIK It's been quite some time since I have seen an Alfa posted here without NCT. :)

It sure is, 7 seat V70s are less than rare and I said "the likes of this" rather than this one specifically, it was merely an example.

Exhaust is a bit blowey around the manifold area....

Drove it recently and it is very good to drive.
    Drivers seat a bit shabby.

You can get the 2 extra seats in the boot retrofitted, no problem.

Now, I'd still don't recommend it.

When the americans more than complained, why BMW for example didn't offer any 7 seat option for their 5-series Tourings, BMW just said: "Why would you have anyone sitting in the crumple zone ??".

If you need a 7-seater, buy a minibus FFS !!

I had my previous W124 estate in for a service a couple of years ago with an independent garage, and a V70 was on the ramp beside it. As I'd been considering both before buying the Mercedes I asked the mechanics there which they would buy with their own money. All 5 choose the W124, based on its build quality, comfort, reliability, relative lack of complex electronics, and running costs. I can see how the Volvo is more modern, probably safer, and equally as comfortable to drive, but its still nowhere near as good as a decent W24. I say "decent" as most for sale these days are chicken sheds on wheels, and you'd have to have a real dislike for your chickens to put them in some at that! Theres always a few W124 estates (S124 for the pedants) for sale cheaply, I've looked at loads over the last few years but they almost always need a fair amount of money spending on them unless you're happy to drive a skip, some decent saloons going cheap though.

If and when I have to replace the W124 I currently have it will probably be with a 7 seat V70, but only after I've checked every W124 estate for sale in the country. Fingers crossed I don't have to cross that bridge anytime soon

I saw others which with 50k miles have to be clocked or involved in major shenanigans but this one is a 95 Registration and already has over 200,000 Miles on the clock. Great car or not, I am wondering how many more miles could a potential buyer expect to squeeze out of it in the future ? Sure I could even be a potential buyer if I was prepared to live with the tax and insurance but not if the engine will blow up within 6 months. What do the experts think about how many miles would be left in it ? I think it's a reasonable question.

As said previously it depends on how the previous owner has looked after the car. About 15 years ago I brought one with 240,000km on the clock, we used it as a company car and it was written off in an accident with 891,000km on it. 1991 300TE Auto, oil and filter changed every 15-20,000km, any parts were changed before they broke, not after they broke. We used an independent garage, never went to a main dealer. Excellent car but as a poster above said good ones are rare, you might be better off going to the UK for a well specced well maintained one.

890,000 km is nothing unusual, living in Germany at the time there were loads of W114/5's and W123's going around with 500,000-1,000,000 km on them. And it's not just Mercs, my father sold a datsun 120Y in the 80's with 230,000 miles on it, we saw it years later and it had over 300,000 on it, I also know of a Citroen AX that did almost 300,000 km and was genuinely in perfect condition when it was written off.

Most older cars will hit astronomical mileage if and when they are looked after, newer ones will too but it's the electronics that tend to give up first and be expensive to replace, I think there was a thread on highest mileage cars and vans somewhere here in the past few months.

€640 online based on an optimistic current market value of €2000

Also, looks like a red 159 in the background. Could have an enthusiast on our hands here which makes it look an altogether better, safer buy

While not much of a looker, hell of a lot of car to be fair. Get it down to a grand and it would be a bargain if you'd a young family or one on the way and needed the room

€ 750. Could be nice if it checks out, NCT Jan 13, Tax until August.

Petrol with no mention of Tax or NCT, cloth seats and terrible color. You can pick these up with years NCT + half leather interior + nicer color for around 800 euro. Trade sale would be worrying too - I bet there are some problems with electronics...

I didnt bring it up this time, Capri did and i advised him that i've already been down this road before and not to give it any more of his time. Let no more be said on the matter.

I wouldnt read too much into it, sure half the country has an avensis / corolla , focus / mondeo combo on their cars. some people just choose by brand.

I would agree with you if it was Ford or Toyota but anyone who has two Alfas in their driveway has to really like them.

Those Volvo's are brilliant cars. I had a vert of those. Loved it. Would definatly buy one again.

The self-adapting auto-box in those Volvos is actually very good and pretty unproblematic. It's really down to preference, but either are pretty much trouble free, properly maintained.

Will he not have to put that through a new NCT before he sells it?
