After seeing a good few unmarked Hyundai's now I must say they are as easy to spot now as the Mondeo's. Granted they do not have the wing lights and roof aerials but they are very easy to spot.

You can, but i'd bet the majority of people would never spot one..

Give it time. The powers that be are like sheep, no such thing as buying multiple brands, Using non 'd' reg etc.

It won't be long until everybody slows for the i40 only to increase once inspected. It will be the battered mondeo all over again.

A huge selection of different branded cars is badly needed. I mean having nearly all mondeo's was a mad idea..

They should also start using unmarked vans more. It only makes sense. I know of a 08 umarked high roof transit and it always just blends in.

If it's really unmarked covert car you would never know it

The unmarked cars you see on the street don't remain unmarked for long in area when people see it

Yes - having a variety of cars would help enormously - and IF Mgt were to take traffic corps more seriously - been able to vary the makes - might enable better cars to be bought - in small batches.

Audis* would be ideal as an unmarked imo - especially if you don't actually have someone on RTE from AGS blabbing off about this great investment in decent Audis.

The time for lawbreakers to discover the nice unmarked Audi - is when they are sat in the back - having been arrested - or been asked to discuss said lawbreaking :D

    * they come in all shapes and sizes - so don't even have to be massive high powered models either if operational reasons prevented the use of high powered examples. But a trained driver could use a higher powered Quattro if their specific role created a valuable use for such a car.

I would willing to argue that any-driver would be able to handle 'said' high powered audis. They are not rocket ships, anyone can go to the dealership and buy them. I reckon more training would be needed to learn how to handle a connect van at speed! :D

The media often state the price of said cars. However we must remember the majority of the price is VRT. (Which should not be paid by Garda). Likewise seeing as the Garda do not pay road tax the large engines which the public perceive as ridiculous suddenly become much more realistic. Goverment should state the real price of said investment. Perhaps they could be after a year or two at plus VRT price and therefore recoup cost of fleet.

The funniest thing one see's on a daily basis is the unmarked Fiesta with 3/4 grown adult men driving it. 'Doesn't stand out at all'!

I flew out of Knock Airport Once, Landed in the UK. First Police car I seen was a Range Rover (Excellent Motorway cruiser), I don't recommend them here however Discovery 4 would be an excellent choice. However when I returned to Ireland first Garda car was a battered Fiesta.

Also, I think unmarked cars should not be 'parked up' outside garda stations and also parked outside high profile crime scenes being beamed around the country. Doesn't take long for the public to become aware.

As you say anyone can go to an Audi dealer and buy a high powered example and drive away if they have the money.

But with AGS - as far as I know - from what I read on here - if you go over a certain level of power - the drivers using the higher powered cars must receive driver training or a higher level of driver training

Can't remember what that level was though - and I could be wrong in thinking that.

Advanced cars I think they are referred to (cars above the horsepower level).

For example a 3 litre Mondeo (older model) or the newer 2.2 diesel Mondeos are advanced cars I think - because they are above a certain level of power

I understand that and I agree. However as a member of the public - I cannot see the need.

Yes, provide driver training by all means. However one should not restrict what type of car a person could drive.

As I said the high-horse power cars are more the likely easier to drive/ safer than the reduced power ones. Especially when being driven fast.

Its do with the nature of AGS work - you might need to drive at speed to emergencies etc - chase someone.

Also - its down to the nature of an AGS role where a higher powered car would be needed/useful - if your given a higher powered car - its because your in a role where that power might be useful or needed.

Hence more likely to be driving at speed/in pursuits etc - so more training is needed.

Its probably all down to risk management - driving at high speeds is more dangerous for someone whose not trained to do so - then for someone whose well trained - and has demonstrated competence in driving higher powered cars at speed under various road conditions

Its also easier to justify extra training if your talking about only a small percentage of the fleet - or a small number of roles.

Serious question here, is there a pandemic of crooks getting away in Lambos, Ferraris and Bugattis at the minute?

    This too shall pass.

No, But a lot of cars crooks are using are a lot faster than anything the gardai might have..

Which to be fair nowadays is not too difficult.

Have the gardai ever considered leasing?

Think a lot of police service in the uk are doing it, could it work over here?

The lettering is starting to peel on the back of the mondeo already.

A little dob of super glue on it now should do the trick before it gets worse.

What's the mileage on that Focus?

    This too shall pass.

Seen an 11 Avensis regular today with an anpr box on it's boot lid. Also seen a new marked i30 which I think is attached to the Bridewell though I could be wrong. They look smaller then the focus estate.

Regarding the advanced 2.2 Mondeo : the twin exhaust looks well along with the drl's but the hubcaps and smaller wheels ruin it.

It's funny; The Mondeo's don't even have xenon headlamps. You think they'd spec that due it's use 24/7 on safety grounds alone.

Depends, xenons headlights can be quite expensive as an add on as well as cruel to oncoming drivers eyes.

When buying in bulk there should no issue regarding price. As for incoming drivers it's only because either that they are rubbish after markets or your staring at them.

I find merc xenons incredibly bright; I've often thought they were some rubbish aftermarket kit they were so bright.

We can't even get fog lights as standard so let's not get too far ahead of ourselves.

seen a few avensis with fogs. They look great and makes it harder to spot them as garda from a distance.

I'v seen a lot of 01 mondoes still on the go lately.. I would have thought they'd of reached the milage limit a long time ago..
