    Ignorant post.

maybe thats the problem with ireland. uk multinationals coming over and wiping out irish independant stores, and taking there profits out of the country end of year.

uk has been very good to us. stick your head back in that hole you pulled it out of.

Just for comparison, spend in Dunnes Stores and you money ends up in the hands of one family, spend in Tescos and your money is in the hands of a publicly quoted company with many of it shares owned by Irish-based pension funds (the last time I looked anyway). The economic damage done to Ireland in the last 2 years was by Irish politicians, developers and bankers. The British were one of the quickest and least demanding of our supporters when we needed it badly. It was mutual interest, but they didn't try to ride us.

If you're going to comment on economic matters, learn a little. Just a little. And lose your mindless, moronic prejudice.

Go to any city here in Ireland and our shopping streets are filled with UK high street chain stores eg next, topshop, newlook, m&s, hmv, etc. They contribute hugely to employment. The UK has been very good to us and without them we're fcuked.

Care to explain why their head's been in a hole?

Obvious "800 years" thread is obvious.

Like or loath Cameron, it's nice to see somebody in Europe have the balls to make a decision and stand by it .

Interestingly enough, the origins of a boycott are Irish, arising from the Irish Land War, a conflict with the British... go figure

Did not know that. Go ahead so

Before being bothered by whether it's owned by a US or UK company, perhaps think also of the very many people employed in Ireland by Cadbury - particularly in Coolock - but also the massive amount of milk product which has been bought over the years to manufacture chocolate product for export rather than domestic use. I realise this is After Hours but in that case let's have naked xenophobia rather than this pseudo justified type.

the word originating from a man named Captain Boycott who was the resident agent for a non resident landlord in South Mayo who was shunned in the street to show that he could not expect to put people out of their homes and still be treated with respect. The story was made into a film starring Clark Gable!

Is there anything they haven't made a film out of? Also the resemblance between Boycott and Gable is uncanny! :P

OP Ireland is a tiny country and without trade with the UK we are in big trouble.

About time someone stood up to the EU. Merkel and Sarkozy went onto a room and devised the future of the EU by themselves. Who elected them to do that.

How the fuk did you infer that? /whirs finger next to temple
Do something about that paranoia, kid.

German and French economies have never been comparable to Ireland's btw, as you know. If our economy doesn't need a helping hand, how come we haven't gone it alone ages ago? Whatever plan you have for us in this regard you should share it instead of keeping it to yourself.

All the British government is doing is protecting its interests as best as it can. Firstly, The imposition of a financial transaction tax would have serious implications for the UKs financial sector. The importance of this sector to the UK cannot be overstated... it drives an enormous amount of government revenue for them and a huge chunk of the tax take in corporate profits and employment.

Secondly and more importantly there was talk of forcing all euro denominated transactions to take place within the eurozone - under eurozone regulation. This would have been simply unacceptable to the UK. Despite not being in the eurozone, London is the eurozones financial capital, most trading and currency there is held in euro. Only are sums locally converted to sterling. Forcing this measure through would have made the city unviable as a trading centre - the majority of banks would have to relocate to the Eurozone (This would have been a major boon for the IFSC as relocation from London to Dublin would be relatively simple). This would have been catastrophic for the UKs economy and thus would be forced to join the euro.

The UK simply stood up for its own selfish interests as you would expect. There is nothing particularly noble in that I think.

Bingo, not to mention British controlled Tax havens Guernsey and the cayman islands making these financial institutes avoid paying as much tax as they should be on there profits. 98 of the FTSE 100 companys avoid paying tax in the uk through guernsey, Its something very similar with american banks and the cayman islands.

The UK and cameron protecting the world elite

Businesses have seen an economic reason to open shops in ireland for profit, nothing to do with the uk.

    Op idea is stupid tho!
