I'd cut and paste it in here but just saw that copyright thing. WALOS.

Anyway they have had a go at Grand National runners and jockeys on the link. Does Davy Russell have anything for the race ...presume he cant do 10 4 even if Tharwaat goes ?

The person who told me Ballabriggs at 50/1 is now telling me Giles Cross big time. Its the National but this horse is in serious order. This is my best info this year so far I tipped Countrywide Flame as a banker at Cheltenham, the war office had 5e e/w on it at 33/1 loads of brownie points.

Giles Cross hasn't an absolute hope of staying the trip.

Im just stating what I was told by a person who knows that this horse is in serious order. You could be right but the ground is perfect. The money is down big time ,Huntly I think you make your own bets but this horse is going to run a hugh race.

Why would I back a horse that will blatantly not stay the trip?

Giles Cross will swing away off the bridle for a circuit and a half and then empty. He hasn't a hope of winning or even placing for that matter.

The owners /trainers in my opinion know more than you.You are a fool please do not contact me again.

If the owners/trainers think he will stay 4m 4f then I would question whether they know more than me. We will see who the fool is in 9 days.

Giles Cross is best priced 25's, considering I am such a generous and charitable guy I will exclusively lay you whatever you want at 27's.

The Grand National is always a tough one to call. For example I Had the winner of it a few years back, Mon Mome was the name of the horse and he was 100/1, had him each way too so made nice few quid out of him. My Best tip is pick a few outside horses and go each way on dem, worth a shot anyway.

Can you point out all of the facts he has declared which have been proven incorrect?

I am offering you the best odds on the market for Giles Cross which you consider your "best info". If you want to take me up on my offer and talk numbers you can PM me.

It was only 3 weeks ago that you didn't have enough to buy a Peugeot though and you want us to believe you have €50,000 or more to gamble? Comical.

I have highlighted that Giles Cross won't stay the trip and you can make of that what you will.

It is no skin off my back if you blow all your money on the horse and are standing out in the garden in your knickers.

Would be inclined to agree with Huntley on GC. Looks like a horse that needs a bog (although he has won on Gd) but couldn't see him winnning. Fwiw, Jason Maguire believes Ballabriggs will be very hard beat and isn't worried about his weight. I would have liked Chicago Grey but would want at least 20's to back him.

On His Own will probably be my main bet though. Can't believe he's still available at 20's.

Is Giles Cross' form not all on soft/heavy ground?

  • Registered Users Posts: 188 ✭✭Stewie Griffin

I have Chicago Grey and Cappa Bleu, both at 25s.

Yeah I'm not sure I would back Giles Cross either based on his 'ability' to empty at the end of the Welsh National trip, but it's possible he could stay further on better ground. I wouldn't be rushing to dismiss him so readily.

He won his novice hurdle on good ground and was 3rd in a midlands GN on good ground, albeit 37 lengths behind Synchronised. Looks far more comfortable on a bog. Welsh National is an ideal race for him.

You should take Hunteys very generous offer and fill your boots and then you will have money for your car.

I would love to see Neptune Collonges win but can't see it off that weight, hope I am wrong. I really don't understand why Nicholls has been using him as a handicapper.

Ok, this is just an observation but it seems people take this for granted so I'll make my point once and you can agree or disagree.

Too many people see a lot of soft form in a horses race record and assume that they can only win on soft ground. This is a poor estimation of an individual horses chances in any given race. This is a generalisation and gets proven unreliable on occasion and that makes it worth pointing out.

Some horses of course hit the ground very hard and can jar or injure themselves if they run on unsuitable ground. Thats one type. They might not even run on that ground because of the danger.

People all too readily mix these horses up with those horses who win on soft ground because it slows down the other horses so the 'soft ground specialist' can keep in the race and stay better than the rest.

If your considering the national. they still go very fast, at least for the first 6 fences so a soft ground horse of type 2 (slower horses) can get behind but they are not running worse than they normally would. He is just inconvenienced by the cruising speed of the others.

    Examples = Synchronised & Teaforthree.

When these horses are run over a longer trip on Good or Good to Soft ground, the race is normally run slower and their staying power over their soft ground trip is enhanced because it takes less energy than ploughing through the mud even if the horse is a soft ground specialist.

    That's my theory anyway

As for Giles Cross, I don't think he'll win but there are reasons for thinking the longer trip on better ground might suit. He needs to settle better.

The forecast shows a lot of rain next week. Wouldnt be jumping to conclusions about the ground yet. FWIW a couple of people who I would consider decent judges put up Giles Cross on other forums.

he is the ideal welsh national horse. But he has proven in the last two years that he doesn't stay the 3m6f distance.

I learned an expensive lesson when backing master oats in royal athlete's grand national. Was the class horse in the race, (winner had class) but both travelled past Valentines on the bridle leading the field. Gold Cup Winner and Welsh National Winner Master Oats had me getting excited. He hit the wall and finished fourth.

If Giles Cross stays he has a huge amount in his favour. But I cant look beyond how he has emptied in the Welsh National twice, same at Uttoxeter. You will get a huge run for your money, but I think he won't finish.

I have a £5 to back a horse in the national. what would be a good each way bet for a fella who hasn't a clue? All I am looking for is my horse the travel the course and give me an interest and at long odds?

Anyone got an opinion (except Huntley) on Alfa Beat ? . This horse was . bought with the GN in mind last year and although last two runs would"nt inspire confidence , distance wont be a problem. He has won on all types of ground. Have searched for Jockey, but cant find who. At 33/1 could be worth a punt .
