I have a problem that I'd reallllllllly appreciate help with. I definitely want to do Pharmacy, that's my dream. But the problem is there's only 3 pharmacy courses in Ireland, in TCD, RCSI and UCC. TCD and RCSI are fine because they're in Dublin but Cork is literally hours away. I'd only be able to go home once a month because of transport costs, etc. So should I follow my dream of doing pharmacy and put UCC higher up regardless or should I stick to Dublin for convinience?

You should definitely put it up higher! UCC is first on mine then TCD. UCC is a claaaass college, and I know people who live in student accommodation there and think its absolute BANT. Brookefield accommodation seems to be the place to be hahahaha :) And the freedom you'd get from living away, they all say its amazing, and its a class way to make friends from outside your course, and to have friends before you even start college :)

There basicallu what I'm looking at to.
I realy like the idea of doing a language with a business course. I'm worried about points and places.

I know but sure what can we do? :o
With any luck we'll get what we want but sure, with 15 places for my first choice it does add pressure :o Letshope for the best :p

Leave it as number 1 just incase you get it. Put the newer one below it on the Cao so it'll still be there. Nothing worse would be seeing you could've gotten your course but changed it the last minute.

I want to do Primary Teaching so I have the four main courses down, but I really doubt that i'll get it so now i'm putting in arts degrees! there's no difference in arts degrees for primary and secondary teachers is there? it's only what you do after it that matters isnt it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,479 ✭✭✭ChemHickey

Changed mine... just took off the #5

    1) Mathematical Science -NUIG
    2) Mathematics -TCD
    3) Theoretical Physics and Mathematics -NUIM
    4) Mathematics -NUIM

I kinda want to put in Chemistry &Molecular Modelling from TCD down, but there is no point really. No point in having numbers 2,3,4....

Also, I want to do Chemistry & Mathematics MSci in UCL... That'd be noice... :D

Leave primary as the first four choices. Then put down some arts degrees. You never know, you might have easily gotten enough points!!

I'm terrified to go near my CAO in case I somehow break it and end up with some mad course as my number one. Its highly unlikely, but I'm the sort of person who brought selotape to the exams JUST IN CASE.

As it stands now, all in TCD
    French and Law
    Business and Law
    Law
    Law and Political science
    Business and French
    BESS
    Economics and Spanish
    European Studies
    French and Italian
    UCD: French and International Politics.

I am all over the place and don't know what to put on my CAO!!

    So.. my options are:
    Medicine
    Nursing
    Science
    Primary School Teaching
    International Languages

I either don't like the course or the job afterwards. I really wanna go to UCD and have a course where I can travel abroad and have time for a sociaI life . My ideal job would involve helping people and where no days are the same.I'm always learning something new.. I'm putting Medicine down first but I don't know what order to put the rest.

The science course seems interesting as I love biology but I find the idea of working in a lab for the rest of my life boring and it lacks human contact.

To be honest , I don't want to be a nurse. It's just an alternative to medicine. I find the idea of cleaning patients, giving injections and following doctor's orders disconcerting.

Primary School Teaching- It seems like a nice job but I won't be able to travel or work abroad. I don't find the college course too appealing. Also, teachers get very low pay.

International Languages- I wouldn't like of working as a secondary school teacher, translator or interpeter but I love Spanish and the culture.

I either don't like the course or the job afterwards.

From speaking to people who've gone to college or are there at the moment, it seems that it is never a good idea to pick a course based on what job you might get out of it or how well it would pay. If you put the courses in order of preference for which one you enjoy the most, you'll more than likely end up enjoying whatever profession that may lead to (and doing biology doesn't necessarily mean you would have to work in a lab, there's lots of routes to go with a degree like that).

I started worrying about stuff like this a while ago. I was concerned about what would be the most valuable degree, would get me the best paying job, and all that other bs. You only get one life, and a good chunk of that is going to be devoted to working so you might as well enjoy what you do and look forward to each day. Money isn't everything and the most successful people in any field are people who love what they do and would do it if it payed them as much as a street sweeper.

Do what you love and what you're good at, and with hard work you'll succeed :D

    1.computer science UCD
    2.computational thinking NUIM
    3.computer applications DCU
    4.computer science TCD
    and so forth.....

cant understand why people put down totally unrelated courses all the way down the list.

Because not everyone has a definite idea of what they want to do in college/people are interested in varied courses. Not that hard to understand really.

I'm curious. Why do you have CS in UCD ahead of NUIM. I thought that NUIM course is going to be way higher.

If you mean higher in points that has no relevance, CAO goes in preference not going for the course that has higher points. That'd be silly.

Haven't got a clue what I want to do. Just gonna leave my CAO like this :

    1. Law International UCC
    2.Law UCC
    3.Arts UCC

Think I'll probably end up with Arts which I don't mind because to be honest, even though I think Law sounds interesting, I don't know if I'd actually like it.

Why dont they have a definite idea? you have more than a enough time. Because I have spoken to so many people who are not happy with their area of work and wanted to do a course further down the list. Why put a course down as no.1 and have a totally unrelated field of work, which they have the same interest in, as no.4? Heres an idea, actually spend a considerable amount of time researching your cao choices and be sure on what area you want to go into. Ask questions, speak to people, go to companies etc.....

but if you'd rather leave you're career path to blind luck, be my guest.

It's extremely difficult to know exactly what you want to do for the rest of your life at the age of sixteen, seventeen or eighteen. Some people also love two completely different areas of study. My first and second choices could not be more different, but I'd be delighted with either one. I'd find it very strange if someone was only interested in one specific area of study. I'd find a huge range of courses interesting.

And I've spent three years researching courses. I'm still not 100% sure about my first choice.

    My Cao
    Psychology - NUIG
    Civil Law - NUIG
Computer Science and IT - NUIG
    Arts - NUIG

Psychology is way to high for what I'm expecting to get so it's highly unlikely, I just have it their in the mad chance that I did get it. It's really between law and IT but I can't decide which :(

Anyone else for civil law or computer science in galway? :)
