There has been a move to reclaim the word slut, as well as words like whore and slapper. You'll even hear girls call each other these names in greeting. They are insults. Why would anyone want to be referred to as an insulting word? The girls are promiscuous. That is the non-insulting term. Slut is not exactly a compliment--it carries an inherent negative judgement.

This is one of the most stupid and ignorant things I've ever read. Arts degrees don't qualify you for anything? Then why are there scores and scores of employers insisting that you must have a degree, any degree, to apply for their positions? One of my best friends studied Spanish, he's now working for an investment bank in Canary Wharf, earning £46,000 at the age of 25. My sister studied an Arts subject, she's now working for a multinational in London. I'm in the process of applying for a job as a translator for one of the EU institutions for which I need....you guessed it, a degree. Preferably a degree in languages - an Arts subject. I don't regret doing an Arts degree at all. I know plenty of people who scoffed at it and insisted that their degree in physiotherapy or radiography was going to be much more useful, only to find themselves unemployable because there were too many graduates in their chosen field and they were only qualified to do one specific thing.

It really is ridiculously arrogant for someone who never went to university to decide which degrees are useful and which aren't. You haven't a clue. Perhaps if you had actually done a degree, you'd realise how much work goes into doing well and how much you learn if you take it seriously.

I don't think they do it to make ends meet. Here's an article about Cambridge students doing it because it pays better than working in Morrisons. Though it is about escorts and not prostitutes.

It reminds me of one genius who was warbling on about young Irish women going to work in German brothels, presumably based on his analysis of the economic crisis and whatever theory of how war should work he gleaned from the pages of Hustler.

Words are not insults in and of themselves. How you use them is what makes them insults. People use derogatory terms to describe each other in friendships all the time. The reasons for this are many, and likely differ from group to group and from friends to friends as to why they feel comfortable engaging in it.

Dave Allen did a great sketch on this and is worth watching, especially for the text which explains WHY Allen did the sketch (it was a two finger salute at viewers who complained he cursed in one show).

Really, I'd argue that women are the ones who use "slut" as a derogatory term for other women sleeping around. Primarily because the more women have sex for free the harder it is to order your boyfriend to clean up etc.

Not ALL black people do. In fact, I'd say it's actually a minority of black people who do. Words are not insults in and of themselves but years of meaning and intention imbue them with a value independent of whether insult is meant.

So, for example, a bitch may just mean a female dog, but I'm sure as shit not calling my mother one. :pac:

Like it or not, a small percentage will become escorts/prostitutes. It DOES happen, whether you believe it or not. Irish girls have been documented to have worked/be working in brothels abroad too. It may be a very small amount, but it does happen.

If (as is documented fact), English students become prostitutes, why would it be crazy to imagine that a small amount of Irish girls would. Particularly those having difficulty with fees (postgrads, people not eligible for free fees etc).
