So you're a Cavan man bought up in Leeds.

You must be very very good at saving money.....

I do believe that copper wire was invented by a Cavan man and a Leeds man fighting over an old penny !!!:D

Love the way the nationalists and sectarians consider anyone who is above flag waving parochial pride to be infact, brit lovers :D

has to be the most ridiculous horse manure. it's up there with americans who call people terrorist lovers if they don't join in on the sickening patriotic bandwagon.

Fratton, from reading his posts, is a Brit lover. I wouldn't be saying it unless I had a reason to think it. I don't just randonly call anyone a Brit lover.

I agree with the second bit. Although another more moronic thing is someone who goes out of his way to define himself as a lefty then wants to us to commemorates soldiers who fought FOR an imperialist army in Ireland, Palestine, India, Kenya etc etc etc, I mean what would you make of that for sheer f**king irony:D

Yes, but you don't need to be Irish to celebrate St Patricks day, which is why I don't see them connected.
You are celebrating being Irish and Irish people when celebrating St Patricks day though. I don't think it can be made any clearer.

No you aren't. Another huge myth. St Patricks day is a Christian holiday.

Of course all the wannabe Brits on here slate those not from Ireland who have a pride in their Irish heritage because you have a hatred of your own country and an admiration for another (Britain).

    lol

This is exactly the same thing again, you don't like what I have to say so you assume I'm a brit lover

What a stupid thing to say actually.

And so is Christmas, not a family holiday;)

    It's Ireland's national holiday, it's also a national celebration.

Are you seriously saying that St Paddy's day isn't a celebration of Ireland?

... and he's the patron saint of Ireland, in which capacity celebrations are undertaken, not his Welsh birthplace.

Again with the pride thing

Whats your objection to the use of the word?

Some people feel proud to admit that they are part of a group of people with certain moral, social or other values. In the case of someone from the Bronx declaring themselves "Irish" it is as much, or more about declaring loyalty to a lifestyle where there is a strong tradition of service in NYPD/FDNY, of Catholic faith and of a stereotypical toughness (the hard drinking fighter) than a loyalty to where their great-granny was born. They are proud of their upbringing and to pass it on to their sons/daughters.

Being proud to be Irish/English/etc isnt just about some primitive sense of superiority based on what lump of rock you were born, it can be a pride in the values that culture represents

and lets not forget that st.patrick taught us all about jesus smary and joseph.

smary assed people get my goat.

Someone should inform the Scots as well because Saint Andrew was born off the Sea of Galilee which I think is a bit off away from Scotland:D

I don't know, looking at some of the recent threads in this place its clear that certain people have a real, virulent, and unreasonable hatred of Ireland, and don't mind waving it around, and who knows what their actual point of origin is.

Funny how you never meet that sort in real life.

I wash my hands of it and rejoin normal people who have better self confidence than to run down a country in order to feel better about their own shortcomings.

Very true, St Patricks day is a celebration of all things Irish, which is a good indication that the Irish are well liked/loved, or that the Irish have done a good job of selling their culture, one of the two, but dressing up as a leprechaun drinking guinness doesn't make you Irish, in fact it probably proves you aren't!!

And St George never went to England, or Poland for that matter. Possibly not even Milan.

Actually, I think them, or the EDL or one such braindead organisation is campaigning for either St Edmund or St Alban to replace St George.

A saintly scholar doesn't have the same charisma as a crusader though.....

The OP's attitude pisses me off. Who the **** are you to tell them which country they themselves feel they are from.

If they say they are Irish, **** that's good enough for me. I don't need to see their birth cert nor do I expect them to speak with an Irish accent. Have you no pride in your own nationality that you are not proud that someone with eight different nationalities in their blood chooses Ireland over all the rest?

    **** post with a **** dripping attitude.

People getting pissed off for no reason pisses me off!

I like that people claim connection to Ireland and don't see why anyone would have a problem with it. It's really just another way of saying
'I automatically like you because you are Irish, because my so and so was Irish too and therefore I feel an allegiance to the place, though I may have never been I'd love to go one day, tell me all about it, I have romantic notions' :) It's general friendliness.
Just the same as a Mexican would like a Spanish visitor. Or maybe not :)

Take antiques for example - people are fascinated about their origin, the stories behind them and obviously the older the better.

In USA right now and I met a girl the other night who said she was "85% Irish and 15% Scandinavian". How on earth did she do the math(s) for that one?!
