People saying they are Irish - when they clearly aren't!

This is one of my pet peeves

So many people (mainly Americans) that I have met say this because their great great great grandmother was half Irish!

You are NOT Irish, yes you have Irish ancestors but that does not make you Irish!

Fair enough some people are proud of their ancestory but a lot of them take it way to far...

I was in the US in the summer and i swear every 3rd person said they were some part Irish... one lad who has never been to Ireland says so, his great grandmother was Half Irish. All he did was talk about Ireland and hating the English for the 800 years (seriously? noone cares about that anymore) , and everything he ever posts on Facebook is about Ireland etc... (His most recent post was in irish and badly translated from English with an online translator - thats what spurred this post)

My ancestors (waaay back) come from France, but I don't go around telling everyone im Part French or French-Irish!

I don't know, looking at some of the recent threads in this place its clear that certain people have a real, virulent, and unreasonable hatred of Ireland, and don't mind waving it around, and who knows what their actual point of origin is.

Funny how you never meet that sort in real life.

I wash my hands of it and rejoin normal people who have better self confidence than to run down a country in order to feel better about their own shortcomings.

Very true, St Patricks day is a celebration of all things Irish, which is a good indication that the Irish are well liked/loved, or that the Irish have done a good job of selling their culture, one of the two, but dressing up as a leprechaun drinking guinness doesn't make you Irish, in fact it probably proves you aren't!!

I like that people claim connection to Ireland and don't see why anyone would have a problem with it. It's really just another way of saying
'I automatically like you because you are Irish, because my so and so was Irish too and therefore I feel an allegiance to the place, though I may have never been I'd love to go one day, tell me all about it, I have romantic notions'

It's general friendliness.
Just the same as a Mexican would like a Spanish visitor. Or maybe not

Take antiques for example - people are fascinated about their origin, the stories behind them and obviously the older the better.
