i still find firefox better and faster on leopard - even with safari 4

altho i love the bookmark frontpage thing and it does look sleeker

What about the zoom on Safari? There's no zoom on FireFox AFAIK.

Opera has a great zoom feature, just hold down CTRL/CMD and scroll wheel in or out.

Safari drives me nuts the way tabs dont redraw properly while loading.

I use it for Java stuff. That's all really.

I have the new MacBook, and have that new pinch/drag option which only seems to work on Safari.

If you use the Firefox 3.5 Rc, that supports gestures

I've been using firefox.. bit it been crashing alot lately!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,653 ✭✭✭conchubhar1

safari crashes more than firefox - altho i use it more so...

safari looks slicker - but you can make ff look however you want

ff - better custimization, add ons etc

opera - it has a great feature that increases speed on a slower connection
has that frontpage feature that safari has

so i use safari, ff and opera at different times for different things

    +1
Bloody hell, firefox crashes 3/4 times a day for me now :( Have done a clean install and everything. Gah, back to Camino.

I do think that safari looks much sleeker, ie multi bookmark frontpage thing. However in my experience firefox is much quicker and less prone to crashing.

I've been using Chrome on my MacBook Pro for the last week - I'm after making it my default from FF.

    changed from ff to chrome

it's not brilliant yet but I think it'll get better

strangely it doesn't accommodate google toolbar

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 234 ✭✭thebossanova

Chrome ftw! Very fast! Should be good when it can accommodate add-ons. Still firefox for any webwork though.

This copy and pasted from a post I made about Firefox 3.6s flash performance over on the mozillazine forums

Some interesting results here. This a is a stress test primarily designed to compare Flash to Silverlight but also works as a handy measure of Flash performance in the big three mac browsers.

    http://www.shinedraw.com/mathematics/flash-vs-silverlight-fps-meter-stress-test/

On my machine Chrome averaged 56fps on the standard 3 rotating icons and it took more clicks than I can count to get it under 30. Safari surprisingly averaged 30fps on 3 icons while firefox brought up the rear on a terrible 7-10fps right from the get-go. Adding more icons didn't seem to lower the frame rate but it did slow the browser almost to the point of being unusable. I also tested Camino which performed the same as firefox.

Hopefully once HTML 5 makes its inevitable assent we can be done with Adobe and its buggy CPU hogging plugin but as it stands right now Firefox still needs to work on playing nicely with flash.

FF had gotten slow. I could not move, delete or add new bookmarks so I abandoned it and am using Camino now. Really like its speed and simplicity. One thing I don't like is when I create a new tab, it doesn't highlight the address bar first.

ff 3.5 seems to be a good bit better than previous versions. I was noticing a lot of crashing, eating a lot of ram and hogging the system (only seem to start doing allt hat at around v 3) - so much so I moved to camino for general browsing. Only really stuck with FF for stumbling. 3.5 is alright so far though

is everyone still happy with chrome?

Chrome has some of the speed of safari and some of the extensions and addons of ff.

it is a halfway point of both, personally I hope it gets better until I make it default.

Yeah, enjoying it. It's still a bit buggy though and I haven't abandoned Safari completely.

Google Chrome beta 5 is now out. Even faster.

The only think I don't like about Chrome is that videos tend not to work on some sites. They never work on Apple sites like apple.com/trailers

Does anyone else have this problem with Chrome & YouTube?

When your watching a video on the site, you can't press any of the buttons on the video player, when you click, nothing happens.

When the video is embedded in a site though, like boards, you can click the buttons and they work. But not on the YouTube site. happened to me overnight, one day it was working fine, then broken!

Deleting and re-installing doesn't work, and i've taken off all my extensions.

This is the only problem I've had with Chrome so far...

I generally use Safari and Firefox. Safari's been a bit grumpy as of late so I may stop using it.

Been using Rockmelt lately. Its a version of Chrome with some handy addons in as standard. Worth a look if u fancy a change
RockMelt is built first and foremost for sharing. You browse with your friends (the first thing you do is log into Facebook and your favorite friends and their latest status updates are always available along the left rail). And there is a big “Share” button up top, which lets you share any webpage, along with images and a preview, on Facebook. You could call it a Facebook browser, but it really is more than that. I’ll get into my full review shortly, but if you want to try out RockMelt for yourself, be one of the first 500 TechCrunch readers to click this link—Update: link removed because the invites are long gone—and you will get an invite before anyone else).

The three biggest changes to the browser that you notice with RockMelt is that it is built around friends, feeds, and search results. The left rail is for friend. The right rail is for sites. And the top rail is for search.

Safari is a brilliant browser, but it all depends on the machine sadly. I mean, running it on windows is far from ideal I think, it's just doesn't perform. I was using safari for a long time on my 2008 macbook but now I've switched to chrome and it took me a long time to make the switch. On new machines, safari can't be beaten I think. And the extensions are so simple -- installing and updating are a ****ing delight. The same can't really be said about chrome, but they have an excellent selection.
I'd say run both for a week each, and see which one really works for you. Leave firefox at the door..

    Chrome.
    Firefox 4 beta.
    Safari.

Chrome is best as it's lightning fast compared to safari on my i7 with 10gigs of ram.

Firefox 4 beta is very close to being like chrome in terms of nippiness but loses out because some of my extensions firebug and web dev toolbar were incompatible.

Safari is still fast but it's behind chrome and firefox so I think it will be a while before I use it again for anything bar testing.

Deleted chrome and went back to ff as of the 4.0 release. Didn't like how Google updater kept trying to dial home, even when disabling any connection and any port on little snitch, it still tried to dial home twice every time on startup.

'don't be evil' my ****, shady ****ers

How else might an application check if updates are available? Many applications check at startup or periodically if updates are available.

Chrome also checks for updates to it's list of phishing sites periodically, I think this is every 30 minutes.

I'd call both of the above useful rather than evil.

In fairness to Google, they are pretty open about how what kind of data is exchanged, and what options are available to you regarding this.

    http://www.google.com/chrome/intl/en/privacy.html

Personally, I don't use Chrome much, but not for reasons of paranoia.

Long time Opera user here, like about 5 years.

I'm very sorry to say, Opera has become very slow and buggy, particularly on the Mac platform. It has TONS of advanced features, but it sometimes takes ages to load, and it crashes more often than any other browser.

RIP Opera. At one time you had the perfect balance between features and speed. Now you are just bloated, slow, and buggy.

Firefox is now my browser of choice.
