In all seriousness, 100k for a 2 hour a week radio slot and then it gets bumped down to 60k for the same gig and he throws a wobbler???

    Seriously, 100K a year for 2 hours work a week?!? That's 961.54 Euro an hour ffs! (100,000 Euro a year/104 hours work a week!)

EDIT: Even after being bumped down to 60K, which leaves him on 675.92 Euro an hour, he throws his toys out of the pram. It's no wonder the country is f*cked when this is the order of the day, a lad turning his nose up at more than 600 Euro an hour job.

He's another champange socialist who is too fond of the leather sofa in Lillies. Someone needs to sit him down and give him a reality check, the Celtic Tiger is over Eamo, time to face up to the facts.

those figures are unfair, considering the amount of research that has to go into a radio show with the format of Dunphy's.

Regardless however, I think this was coming ever since the SAM Smith thing, he was laying into O'Brien a few weeks ago, which I have to say I found admirable.

Which was exactly when I stopped listening. Keane might have been annoying and sanctomonious, but he was his own man.

    Rubbish.
    researchers are paid too.
Dumphy is in my opinion a champagne socialist who likes the sound of his own voice.
He went on in that rant about upstairs interference yet ignores how he himself appears to me to want to use the airwaves to further his own somewhat hypocritically espoused views.

bit of a mixed reaction really...dunphy probably thought he was a high profile and in turn should be a high paid "star" and newstalk probably thought they were getting instant ratings increase with him for the money they were gonna pay him.

newstalk via communicorp are a hard nosed business operation that have invested millions into a black hole called talk radio to try and compete with rte radio1 and its not working.

no return on investment as the celtic tiger is long gone and wont be coming back in a hurry and they now feel they need to cut costs and salaries until everyone there will be earning the minimum wage and be the happy face of journalism and radio as the great leader who owns it wants them to be apparently.:)

I think Dunphy makes a good point regarding Denis O'Brien - for him to control 2 national stations, plus local stations and a big chunk of INM is dangerous. Especially given how clearly biased Newstalk has been lately. But he's probably the wrong person to be making the point, I'm sure there would be a lot of resentment among the ordinary staff at Newstalk that someone who was getting a good chunk of money for a show which he seemed to be absent from most of the time is claiming to be making a stand on their behalf.

Indeed, I would be of the opinion that Mr Dunphy has an opinion of himself as the 'man of the people' or the 'champion of the little man' and from what i can deduce appears to have a very idealistic, and off the mark view of what people actually want, or in fact what is major concern to them.

I would venture to suggest that the sacking of a well paid two jobbing journalist and the 'resignation' of a well paid multi-jobbing media commentator is not on the top of the public's agenda.

I would also venture the opinion that ordinary bread and butter issues such as job security, prospects for employment, negative equity, and the most basic thing of all, providing for their families is of much more concern to John Q Taxpayer than the goings on in a well paid media vehicle.

Now nothing wrong with two-jobbing or multi-jobbing, but I feel that Joe and Joanne Public are getting a tad tired of these well sinecured various 'stars' telling us what is wrong with the country, especially when some of them don't even live here.

    I certainly am.

What? He's not going to sit at home collecting the dole instead ffs. Stupid comment. It has absolutely nothing to do with the state of the country.

Dunphy may have quit partly over pay but one thing Dunphy isn't is a liar and his having a go at Newstalk and DOB was a result of his genuine beliefs. The issue is not his quitting but the manner of it.

Yeah, but to be fair, he was off more often than he was on in the past few months from my experience. Nearly every week during the summer there was someone on covering for him.

Dunphys remuneration has nothing to do with his "views". Dunphy was one of the first and few to volunteer for a pay cut at RTÉ. He's a journalist, interference from upstairs, confirmed from upstairs people, is unacceptable. If they want their views broadcast they should become journalists, until then they should respect those they employ and respect their choices. The management have the option not to renew contracts.

He was contracted for 40 shows a year. Should he come in on his days off?

It's a contract he negotiated, if Fionn Davenport or anyone has a problem with it they should blame the management, not Dunphy.

Where to start. Dunphy does live here and pays tax here. Dunphy says he was prevented from talking about and giving his opinion on the issues youve mentioned above.

I doubt very much if Dunphy thinks what's top of everyones agenda is media sackings. Are you implying with your brackets that Dunphy didn't actually resign? Nobody is saying otherwise.

Wasnt Dunphy close to tears on the Late Late when talking about this very subject?

Cue the "crocodile tears", "its alright for him with his money" responses. You can't win in this country. We complain that nobody ever does the honorable thing or stands up for what's right. Then when somebody does, on several occasions, we sneer at them, totally undermining the stand they take. We deserve to be ruled by the Bertie's, Sean Gallagher's and DOB'S of this world.

A 50% pay cut seems kinda harsh. Was anyone else asked to take such a big cut?
It seems like the pay cut was in fact a way to get him to leave, as there was no way he was going to take it lying down.

Anyone else think that this looks very much like a case of constructive dismissal?

In a case of Dunphy Vs DOB I am always gonna side with Dunphy, and I'm glad he has brought attention to the fact that DOB has so much control over our radio. Money talks.

anyone with a grain of sense would've realised that around the time of the moriarty tribunal report when newstalk were almost laughing it off.
still, it doesn't take from the other good programming like moncreiff, off the ball or talking history.
dunphy just needs to realise that when RTE cop themselves on and realise that the competition won't pay exhorbitant wages to 'stars' then they won't need to either, so he'll be doing well with a 50k job for 2 hours a week with extendable holidays.
newstalk are just going down the tv3 route that no one is worth that much. out there the highest earner is on 80k. it's a private business cutting it's costs. if only RTE would do the same.

Did Dunphy make an issue of his pay publicly?

I think 2k a show is very good value for Newstalk. 1250 euro a show is a joke. As much as I think RTÉ's salaries are ridiculous some presenters do have a commercial worth. The problem with RTÉ is defining it, trying to accomplish the impossible task of factoring in the platform that RTÉ gives in the first place in making a success of a presenter, how much of the licence fee goes into maintaining the technology and publicity of RTÉ and the presenter outside of their show. I mean, Gerry Ryan had a huge commercial worth to RTÉ but where would he have been without RTÉ. Same with Joe Duffy and others. And should RTÉ build up people like Gerry Ryan and Joe Duffy and then let them go to commercial operators who will cream millions off RTÉs successes?

The solution is to distribute the licence fee to all operators and allow equal access to the infrastructure, like DAB. It will never be done though.

no idea, but it has come out in the public.
you're right though, if RTE wasn't there, then these people would be nowhere. they keep using the reverse argument though, as in where would RTE be without them. would that many people switch off RTE if there were different presenters happy to work for less than the incumbents? even tubs still has a considerable audience despite figures falling.

there seems to be a delay on live broadcast on newstwlk that wasnt as big before. several minute delay. The live internet feed is now nearly in synch with fm broadcast whenused to be several minutes behind.

I am aware of that, that's why the word 'various' is in there.

I'm not implying anything, merely articulating the fact that in the great scheme of things there are far more important issues to be dealt with by the average citizen.

    That's all I'm saying.

So you are saying that they are both in sync?

Newstalk uses satellite distribution to it's network FM transmission. There will always be some latency between online and onair.

I was never aware that one was 7 min behind the other. Even broadcast delay units that are used will only delay the output by 7 seconds (some can do up to 40sec) and that would apply to the FM and online versions.

you do realise that NewsTalks quoted weekend 30 second spot rate is €200. In reality that will probably be heavily discounted by up to 50%. 24 spots in a 2 hour show at €100 each is €2,400. If Dunphy gets €2,000 thats not much left for the producer, sound guy, the guests, the ESB, etc

Tough. Hire somebody with less profile.

Communicorp made plenty of money during the boom years and staff have already taken pay cuts. If your staff, as Dunphy alleges, are buying their own newspapers it's a disgrace.

7 minutes? I didn't see that mentioned . There will always be a delay on the online stream anyway. As it stands, the FM is about 7 secs behind my online stream. That may change if I were to log on again but by not much.

Isnt that the whole point? He was hired to increase listenership, it didnt happen. He is not earning his salary and left because he wouldnt accept a salary more in line with his listenership.

His profile is useless if it doesnt drive listenership. Performance based pay as he is keem to remind others of.
