A story about my Grandad years and years ago.

He was working late and had to walk home, like any other night. He lived out in the country, a quiet area.

Anyway, walking along the main road at about 1 am he sees a white figure on the ditch up ahead and freaks out. It was at a spot where a guy was knocked down weeks previous and killed.

He stops and still can't make out what this is, and if he is to get home he has to walk right past it, or go back and take the back road home adding on another 30 minutes to his journey.

He says fuck it I'll man up and keep going.

So he makes his way slowly towards the figure, still none the wiser at what it is, but its still up on the ditch.

Only when he gets a few feet from it he realises its a goat eating a hedge.:pac:

If he turned around and went the long way home he would have told everyone it was the ghost of the man knocked down, instead he just had to tell the farmer who's goat it was that it was loose!

I’ve recently been on a clinical placement in a mental health hospital in Maryland in the US. The hospital dates back to the late 1800s it is made up of scores of buildings on a huge campus: twice to three times the size of St.Stephens Green. Many of the buildings are disused and dilapidated surrounded by overgrown grass, weeds, ivy, trees etc. The dilapidated buildings are very impressive red brick with great features and lower windows and doors are boarded up. The hospital once held 4000 mentally ill patients, now its about 600 after deinstitutionalisation etc.

I was staying in the employees dorm on the campus and felt safe around the place. After a night out on the beer I went up to an area on my own where there is about 20 derelict buildings. Its pitch black but im not really a believer of the paranormal etc. and was quite drunk and considering the history of the place I thought it’d be fun and spooky. So I had a wander around right through for a while and really enjoyed it.

The following weekend after the pub I decided I would do it again but this time borrowed a camera off my intern buddy to capture the spookiness. Again I was on my own, it was colder and darker and I was less drunk and a little bit more scared and cautious.

It was about 2am & so dark i needed to stand so close to the buildings to get the flash to light up the picture.. anyway i was walking on a 4 direction open walled roofed path that linked 4 huge buildings.. I was nearing the intersection looking forward into the darkness. This is the best part of the whole place and my camera stopped working when I got onto the 4 way path. All of a sudden as im walking forward into the pitch darkness there is this loud bang sound; like if you pushed over a table, the sound came from straight ahead somewhere in the pitch black, i stopped dead in my tracks and starred forward with my heart beating... my bottle of beer became my weapon of defence as i switched the way i held it in my hand.. i waited to hear further sounds to get more information..i heard nothing and after about 15 seconds i decided to get the hell out of there... i turned and ran, turning to look back to see if i was being followed every few seconds... i got to a lit up part within 20 or 30 seconds and started walking again..i decided to give up..it was too freaky..and the camera i had borrowed had died..then all of a sudden..a flash came from the direction i had ran away from..it was ****in weird..i thought ‘was that a camera or what is going on, did someone just take a picture of me from the darkness?’.. im not entirely sure what happened up there that night but i didnt going up there again... i am trying to upload some of the pics i got

I'm definitely not going to sleep tonight!

Maybe the bang was from someone doing the same thing as you, and getting startled when they heard you and knocking something by accident. The flash was them taking a picture of the mysterious running ghost! :D

Oh,one that happened me and a few mates.

We were standing about chatting one night as teenagers do outside a house on my road that was vacant and had been for years. But it was never run down.

We were on the lane beside it chatting when we heard someone walking from the back of the house on the grass.

None of us could see anything despite all of us hearing the footsteps, so we did the manly thing and ran off!

Had a few freaky dreams involving that same house too. One was being chased by something from it, but I could not see this thing. Every house I ran into to get help was empty and I just kept getting chased.

very true, but that was kind of the point of it..not being afraid of one of the spookiest place you can think of i.e. an old disused mental hospital in the middle of the night.. great opportunity to get photos and experience something unusual. I had been living and working in the hospital for about 6 weeks at that stage and was very comfortable with the place and had overcome the stigma notion about the mentally ill...(disclaimer: i also was made aware of the * craziness* of psychotic illness) but i felt brave, im not a believer of anything paranormal or religious or spiritual and didnt think there would be anyone else up there at that hour of the night..plus my residence building was only 5-10 mins away and i had been up there in the day time a few weeks before with some of the other interns... i cant say what caused the noise or the flash but it was one of the spookiest moments of my adult life.. im glad i have a story to tell tho.. :)

Was walking home alone from college in Limerick one night after playing a late night poker game in red raisins. My home was a mile outside the college (Briarfield for Limerick peeps)

It was about 4am and very foggy and cold

I was going to take the usual short cut through Elm Park (housing estate across from UL) when I noticed a woman standing 100 yards ahead of me in a white dressing gown. Her back was to me and she was staring further up the estate to a group of hooded individuals all wearing black under a tree.

She stood still for a second (I was rooted to the spot with fear at this stage) until she took off running toward the hooded group screaming.

When she reached them one of the hooded men put his hands on her shoulder and she immeaditaly turned around to face down in my direction

They all then started slowly marching down towards me in tandem

Needless to say I ****ing bolted around by the lodge to get home

Had to wake everyone up when I got home I was so frightened

getting the creeps even typing this

Could just have been a few lads working on a Candlemass tribute act

    :pac:

In all seriousness though I lived around the UL area for 5 years and would have walked around there plenty times at night coming back back from the lodge and that story is fairly f*ckin creepy!!

A good 10 years ago or so me my mother, brother and sister were coming home from our aunties it was at least 2am and one of the foggiest nights i can remember.

Anyway theres this spooky old farm house across the road from us with massive gates and a big drive-way.

We were driving past it and i saw this massive old man standing facing the wall,he was wearing a farmers hat and it looked like he was holding a brown paper bag.I said it to them and they saw nothing.

I got mam to drive down the road and turn then right past our house this huge huge man was walking down the middle of the road in the dirction of the car.Bearing in mind the fog that night we were absaloutly terriefied.

So theres a guard that lives beside us so we went into him incase the man was in danger or drunk walking the roads. He was inside his house with another neighbour so they took a spin down the road and saw nothing.

Still spooks me this and when i walk the road,it makes it even worse that its right outside our house..Also last two times i tried to post this it said i was logged out..:eek:

Spookiest I've heard is the one about yer man who figures that his friends are in trouble, goes off to try find them, does so, sure enough, they're in deep sh!t (one of them is completely f.uc.ked up) with some gang or other, yer man ends up in a showdown with the head of the gang, major fight follows, yer man loses a HAND!!
There's more! It turns out the head of the gang is actually yer man's father... spoooky.

    Wat?

    Oh wait I get it

loud bang- tile falling off roof?? some of the slates used in these old houses are massive.
    still, spooky stuff

I've had a fair few spooky stuff happen to me through the years but this was recent:

I had a dream the other night that I was in the girlfriend's house and the movie Sexy Beast came on the TV, had no significance to the dream whatsoever. Just had the start of the movie with Ray Winstone sitting in his pool.

I haven't seen this movie in about 2 years so it appearing in my dream made no sense and had no value to me.

Until later that day when a mate called over for me to fix his machine and mentions "I watched this movie called Sexy Beast last night, you ever see it?"

I honestly replied to him with: "Oh yea, that was on TV last night, wasn't it?"

Him: "No, no. I downloaded it for the craìc when I was looking up gangster movies to watch."

I don't believe in supernatural or dream-future-telling-stuff but I found that pretty funny and coincidental.

It's not scary story, but once a frightened myself to death.

Now all phones can use any songs or sounds as a ringtone. Remember when phones just started to have mp3 rIngtones? So I downloaded a ringtone which is prety mush an evil ghostly lough, but very good quality and very " believable ".

Somebody called me in the middle of the night while I was sleeping.... I heard that lough I the middle of the dream, but when I woke it did not stoped!!! I almost **** myself. Only after good 10 seconds I realised it was my ringtone...

Needles to say ringtone had to go...

My Granny's house. When I stayed there as a child I always got the same freaky nightmares. And to this day I feel watched there and have a "hollow" feeling inside me while I'm there.
And I'm not religious/superstitious and don't believe in the supernatural at all.

First they came for the socialists...

Me and the brother were walking home after a severe session one saturday night. We live about 2 km out of town. Crossing the railway bridge and this big white thing flew up over the bridge and over our heads. We both roared and legged it the rest of the way home, absolutely shítting a brick.

Next day i was walking into town and saw that it was a big fertiliser bag stuck in a tree.

I did not directly experience this but sure anyways.

About 30 odd years ago my oul lad was working in a rural pub, you know the place full of pragmatic, normal oul fellas in for the few pints and chatting about cattle and land and such night. There would be a very strong regular clientele, guys you could set the watch to.

Anyways one night one oul lad, who used to always walk to the pub for his few pints at night comes him, looking very shook and agitated. My oul fella asks if he's okay and yer man won't say anything. At this stage there is just my oul fella and another regular in the pub, three of them. After a few minutes the guy comes round a bit and recounts his walk to the pub.

The walk he would take would be about 3 1/2 miles and it would be on a regional road, so busy enough. Usually he'd get a lift off someone driving along it. That night he was walking along and it was quiet and he meets a young woman walking along towards him. He salutes her and she does likewise. Anyways he goes a couple of feet beyond her when she calls him, he turns around and she asks him does he know the man who gave him a lift home from the pub the previous night, he says he does well, then she says 'That was the man who murdered me'. Next thing she is gone from view.

There was an unsolved murder in the locality dating back 30 years (60 years) prior to that incident.

Make of that what you will. Personally I'm sceptical, my oul fella reckons whatever happened scared yer man real good.

that would freak me out. especially if she wailed like a banshee

    did you see her face?

couldn't make it out when she turned around as she was a good 100 metres or so away and it was dark

She was wearing a white night gown too, which was probably the creepiest thing
