McGrath's drop goal was class. Brilliant kick from Laydon too.

Welsh scrum inside their 22 after a McGrath forward pass

Layden man of the match. I agree with that.

    I've seen him since then

Maybe Hanrahan? I haven't seen him in a while.

Irish TO McGrath sends it touch game over

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,920 ✭✭✭leakyboots

McGrath steals the ball and clears to touch. We were the better side but it was very scrappy

    Great rob by McGrath.

That was good. Some good appearances, no real problems.

    Conditions were tough!

I agree. It's very fast but accuracy was a little off at times. Still, he'll only get better.

Decent game to watch. Henderson, Hanrahan and Leyden the pick of the bunch for me, Leyden reminds me of Simon Geoghegan(through the limited clips I've seen), real pin the ears back style runner, great to watch

Pack were promising especially the back-row, lot of work put in around the pitch. I'm not sure about Jackson as a captain, fair deuce to him for slotting the drop though.

Thought Gilsenan had a great match

It was a scrappy game but these matches usually are. The Ireland A team looked a bit scrappy too last week and they're full time pros.

Leyden was very good and deserved to be the MOTM. There were a few positions where the players might be sweating about keeping their place next week.

    final score lads?

Foster Horan and Daly looked pretty limited to me, not sure what the depth is like in those positions, Marmion was ok but took a lot of steps before every pass.

    11-6 to Ireland

Yeah me too but maybe it was nerves.

I was impressed by Conan. He looks a talented player too.

Conan made some big carries, complemented well by the work rate of Gilsenan and Conneely.

I thought McGrath added some speed to the game, the scrum held up to what looked like a much bigger pack. Jackson was good except for his missed kicks from the kicking tee but did very well for his DG and then to be followed by McGrath for a super kick. Hanrahan & Leyden were the best of the backs.

Very scrappy and we probably should have won by 20 points against a poor Welsh team. However what we're mainly looking for is individual performances and I thought there were plenty of these. Here's my rough assessment of the players

    Outstanding:
    Leyden (what a talent)
    Henderson (bulked up a lot)
Conneely (should make a few Connacht appearances soon)
    Hanrahan (sheer quality)

    Very good:
    Marmion
    McGrath
    Conan
    Gilsenan
    Jackson

    Rubbish;
Jacksons right foot off the tee (surprised they didn't let Hanrahan kick)

The rest were a mixture of good and average. I thought that Daly and Horan weren't great and the likes of Farrell and a few Connacht backs definitely deserve a shot in the next game.

Agreed. I'd like to see one of Finn, Boland or Nelson appear at some point.

I was fairly impressed with Peter Reilly as well, scrummaged pretty well against a bigger pack and was noticeable in the loose. In the last 3 seasons Leinster have seen Maguire, O'Connell, Moore, Furlong and Reilly all impress at this level. Hopefully a few of them will come through in the next few years.
