Joanne's fashion on William Street closing!

Probably not a major loss to most people except the auld biddies!

Mod Post: There is to be no more talk regarding Wickes until there is a formal announcement in the media. Any further new accounts joining just to say they are Wickes employees will be closed.

There are conflicting stories from posters claiming to be Wickes employees, so from here on the topic is off the table until a public announcement is made by either the company or a firm representing it.

Shame to hear that Nibanna in Foxes Box is closing soon. I picked up some really cool Iron Fist hoodies and T-shirts in there. I also love the smell of incence as u walk into the shop. The owner and his wife are really sound as well.

It's a pity, though the location sucked as it is so hidden off the lane down the lane.

More of a retirement than a forced closure. Apparently she wanted to close sooner but decided to remain open until she had informed all her (older) customers.
From what I've been told she hasn't bought in any new stock for quite a few months as she was planning on retiring anyway.

Well I guess now it's official, Wickes has closed. Can anyone let me know if you hear anything about getting money back or having orders honoured please?

I can't find any contact info for them other than their Limerick Store.

I'd start with the Grafton Group PLC. I would link to their website but the website is down.

Just announced on RTE that HMV's 16 Irish Stores will not re-open and that all staff will get redundancy.

    RIP HMV! :(

RIP City Centre with HMV gone.

Well if it was as popular as you suggest then it wouldn't have had to close.

High overheads. Low profit margins all make it hard to make a profit these days. And limerick having one of the highest property rates in the country is doing nothing to help limerick :(

I thought Limerick had one of the lowest rates, they they reduce it for the last few years

I would imagine buying online had a bigger impact than rates to be fair.

Rates are still cited by many businesses as the main reason for closing, Limerick City still have the highest in Ireland despite putting a freeze on them over the past two years, but yes, the online shopping phenomenon is hitting shops all over the place and is certainly becoming a factor in just what kind of city centres, and even those shopping malls on the Doughnut ring, we will have in the future.

tbh, the days of retail dominating our centres (either city or "shopping") look numbered.

For all those who lament the growing numbers of cafes, restaurants and food outlets on the streets these days, it might be worth facing up to the fact that they are among the few who can't really be "taken out" by online purchasing.

Apart from food related, only specialist shops, pharmacies, places like key-cutters, maybe some good clothes shops and of course the ever present Euro2/Bargain Stores with the prime retailers such as Tesco etc.(who have a thriving online presence in any case) look likely to survive in retail.

A problem not confined to Limerick or indeed Ireland. Although seeing as it's how people want to shop, then calling it a problem might be unfair. it's the way things are evolving.

Your right I would imagine that downloading had a big impact on them. I was just saying all the little cuts added up and killed them with blockbuster gone in the uk how wonder I long xtravision can hold out. I hope they last

I recall that when we bought a kitchen from them last year they requested full payment up front. This surprised me and I queried what would happen if they went out of business and I was told they had some type of bond in place and I need not worry! That's all I know about it though. HTH.

Sorry to hear about Wickes. Went in there once to price a kitchen. The guy was busy with another customer and I eventually left without speaking to him. I mentioned this to my neighbour, not knowing he knew the manager. Next thing I know I got a call apologising and they arranged an appointment for me to go in. Ended up getting the kitchen unit, cooker a and my bathroom tiles in there after. Great customer service.

Sorry to see it go. I found them the most resonably priced of all the DIY chains.

Not a great part of the city to open a family diner. Dunno what they were thinking tbh.

    Sad about the Belltable.
