Never mind Michaela, what about that bat eating seagull

I remember her and Chris on The Really Wild Show when Chris had a white spikey cut.

I only knew about it while flicking through the listings on Sky.

    What's happened to Kate

    What's happened to Kate
Apparently she's off somewhere filming something else, and she'll be back for Springwatch 2012.

I didnt see that autumnwatch was on until about 7 o clock last night so gave the Ireland match a miss.I thought Michaela did a good job.I particularly like the home videos as Littlebug said the seagull picking the bats off one by one was very interesting.

Is it just me or has the programme gone a bit "samey" and "stale"? I am watching it but find my attention wandering.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 96 ✭✭santasbird

I have to agree with you there. I recorded it to view later on Friday night. Switched it off half hour into it because I began to drift off. Didnt hold my attention like it used to. It seems to be lacking the true nature feel to the programme. All a bit too jokey.(if you know what I mean)

Did you hear the disco / techno birds on the one show?

A music producer realised that blackbirds, song thrushes and great tits sing to 127bpm

    Cool or what?

What's the programme called? It's not on next week so we have to catch up on the web site

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,878 ✭✭✭whyulittle

It was just a slot-filling short. Looked like it was filmed in the 80's.

didnt catch the name but it was only on for 5 mins between the simpsons and How to Look Good Naked. just some stuff of falcons hunting on the south coast of England and then also in New York. some nice shots of them on office balconies in New York but other than that wasn't great. The only thing on the menu in both locations were pigeons.

A valid question by Fryup. The welfare of the bird would be paramount I would say.

Ordinarily attaching any tag or monitoring equipment to a wild animal requires that it does not effect the animals behaviour, the behaviour of other members of its own species towards it or make it more open to predation.

For the making of Earthflight they used trained birds which meant that they did not have to worry about those restrictions.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b018xsc1
To create its bird’s-eye view of the world Earthflight uses a host of extraordinary filming techniques including filming “imprinted” flocks from microlites, wild flocks filmed from model gliders and silent drones, full-sized helicopter with stabilised mounts and cameras on the backs of trained birds.

There was a good episode of Natural World on RTE2 last night.

Mainly featuring a family of White-tailed Eagles and Black-throated Divers in Scotland. Some great footage of the eagles in particular.

Should be on the Player for those with good enough broadband!

Earthflight was wonderful. Looking forward to seeing the next one, about Africa, I think. The Monty Halls prog about the barrier reef was so boring, it sounded like an old schools programme.

excellent programme, did you see the mouse plague in australia:eek: good holy god

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,784 ✭✭✭Bsal

Yeah that mouse plague was a bit mad, and the Locusts. Don't think I'll be going to Oz anytime soon. Can't wait for Earthflght later too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,878 ✭✭✭whyulittle

I must say I'm not gone on Earthflight. There are some good shots but it's very poorly put together.

The same shots used over and over again, and others that clearly aren't from the same scene thrown together to suit their narration.

At a time when wildlife is disappearing across the planet, one animal is making a comeback - the wolf.

Wolves were wiped out across much of America, with more than a million wolves estimated to have been shot, poisoned or trapped when European settlers arrived.

This enthralling series documents the return of one very special wolf pack to the snowy peaks of Washington's Cascade Mountains - the first to return to the American Northwest in 70 years.

    Thursday April 5th 2012 at 21:00 on BBC1.

Bummer, thought they might have given us a break from MHG this year.
For three weeks on BBC Two, from 28 May to 14 June, Chris Packham, Michaela Strachan and Martin Hughes‐Games follow stories of survival in Spring, a crucial time for wildlife.

As well as watching the action on all the live cameras, the series will reveal the beauty and drama of this exciting season as spring unfolds. Springwatch will also report on the latest wildlife news from across the UK, reacting to stories as they happen, and investigating the events that matter.

Springwatch will once again involve viewers in surveys, inspire everyone to get outdoors, to share their stories and most importantly make a difference to the understanding of nature.

This year, Springwatch has a string of firsts for wildlife lovers to enjoy, including:

seeing into the heart of a kingfisher’s nest
witnessing internal rivalry in a family of urban peregrines
    delving underground to film moles

    More at BBC.

Nationwide takes a trip to Rockabill island, an important seabird breeding island, especially notable for its terns.

Very interesting programme. Having done a season as a Rockabill warden, I can say it gives an accurate picture of what it is like out there during the summer. A very special place indeed...
