    http://www.stickybottle.com/latest-news/deignan-returning-to-unitedhealthcare-and-pressing-reset-button-for-2013/
Former Vuelta stage winner, Philip Deignan’s return to the UnitedHealthcare team has been confirmed for the 2013 season.

The Donegal man moved to the squad 12 months ago from RadioShack and is staying with them for next year.

He will be joined in the ranks of the US-based Pro Continental team by Ireland’s 2012 track Olympian Martyn Irvine, who confirmed his move to the US outfit just yesterday.

However, the team say they are very confident the 29-year-old’s obvious outstanding ability will shine.

“Phil is coming off a season of bad luck and health and the reset button has been pushed,” said team general manager Mike Tamayo.

reasonable ride yesterday in Argentina. Stage profile was a substantial climb midway with a ramp to the finish.

Deignan continues to perform well in Argentina.

16th on GC now which is pretty decent considering he was a late call up.

Would be great to see this be the beginning of a good year for Deignan.

I so wanted to come here earlier to post this but I am scared of jinxing the guy:o

Not much chatter about Deignan on here.

At Volta ao Algarve today he came in 18th in a 35Km TT. This result from a guy who has never been a particularly strong TTer, particularly on a parcours that the likes of Tony Martin, today's victor excels on.

He appears to be head and shoulders above his teammates at the moment. Only De Maar seems anywhere close to him. Considering this result alongside some solid placings on Tour de San Luis's climbing stages and I'd say he's looking very good for the season ahead.

Let's hope his health remains strong and that his form continues. It could be a great year for him.

Philip is currently 3rd on GC at the Tour of Gila in the US.
Today's final fifth stage is a 160k loop with several steep climbs which should suit Deignan.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,511 ✭✭✭dave2pvd

Stage 3 saw him put in another remarkable TT performance:

1 Tom Zirbel (USA) Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies 0:34:45.50
2 Benjamin Day (Aus) UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team 0:00:04.89
3 Silvan Dillier (Swi) BMC Development Team 0:00:09.95
4 Lawson Craddock (USA) Bontrager Cycling Team 0:00:14.07
5 Philip Deignan (Irl) UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team 0:00:24.50

Only 24sec behind Tom Zirbel after 26km. That's beyond respectable! I'm sure UHC are delighted they took the risk of hiring PD.

Today, he ought to certainly stay in the top 3, possibly moving up a step or 2? Fingers crossed he has a good day.

It's been a while since Irish cycling has had this many results in the pro ranks.
Great to see PD on the way back up. Hopefully he kicks on this year.

Deignan put in a hell of a ride today at ATOC.

Horrific finishing hill at the end of 5hrs, >40C desert heat.

He attacked a select group with 3K to go. Road pitched up in the last K, where he was caught and passed, but didn't blow. Ended up 3rd, losing 27" to Acevedo. Van Garderen in 2nd. So Deignan in 3rd overall.

Aye was watching, savage attack from him, could perhaps have done better if he kept his powder dry, but noone else seemed willing to shed the massed BM ranks

Superb from Deignan, I thought he was going a bit early but he hung on for third, could he have won the stage if had kept his powder dry, difficult to know!

Over 200km in that heat, 111'F (44'C) and then a 6km @ 8.5% climb, unreal suffering  (perhaps a little too much :o)

Chad Haga's strava file, he was 6th on the stage.

Just watched the highlights on Eurosport, that was superb from Deignan.

Hopefully he'll get signed by a good ProTour team next year and make himself a fortune.

Greg Henderson if Lotto Belisol tweeter last week that he expects to see Deignan back in Pro Tour shortly.

Thing is, when he is fit he is a superb rider. I would hope that wherever he ends up it is with a team that gives him an opportunity to ride, the way he is being given that opportunity this week.
    Great to see.

I think it would need to be a pretty good offer to tempt him away from UHC. Some of the lesser ProTour teams offers' could be perceived as inferior deals.

Depends on how much he craves a schedule that would include GTs and monuments, I suppose.

Another good performance by Deignan - its does appear from the results he has had to date this year in the US that the pool of talent he is riding against is quite limited. About 5 or 6 guys seem to swap around positions on each race. However he did prove that he has form and world class talent with his ninth place in ToC, which would have been better if the team had been more alert on the day the splits happened due to echelons forming and he lost time.

From the course profile it doesn't seem likely that the next two days will allow any opportunity for changes in the upper end of GC.

Yes fantastic performance and if a climber of his quality can put in top 10 tt's he should well be snapped up for pro tour net year. Only thing is and I alluded to it above is I really don't know what the competition in these races is like.

Maybe not too strong but he did very well in Tour of California and that competition was very strong
