    Just trying to think up cars that used to be about in the '70s and '80s that are never seen, heard of or talked about these days. Stuff the likes of;
    Renault 20
    Renault 14
    Talbot Horizon
    Chrysler Alpine
What else can ye think of?

Opel Kadett 1980 -> ... the ones commonly produced in 'fizzle stick' colours or brick red!

Good idea, often talk about this down the local.

    Ford Orion
    Ford Escort Mk 3
Ford Sierra (see some Sapphires around but almost no 5 doors)
Ford Granada Mk 3 (some 4 door but no 5 door models)

    Renault 5
    Renault 9 and 11
    Renault 18
    Renault 21

    Peugeot 305
    Peugeot 309

    Citroen BX

    VW Polo Mk 2
    VW Passat Mk 2
VW Jetta Mk 1 and 2

    Fiat Uno
    Fiat Regatta
    Fiat 127
    Fiat Ritmo
    Fiat Panda
    Fiat Tipo

    Toyota Corolla E30, E70
    Toyota Carina A40, A60
    Toyota Camry V10, V20

BL-Austin-Rover (essentially apart from the Mini anything they built has disappeared or is an import, some Metros around but nothing else)

East European. FSO, Lada, Skoda.... they had a nice chunk of the market here for a while, almost all gone.

The thing about it is that all of the above were major sellers in their day, usualyy topping the sales list for their particular class, thats why its amazing that they are so rare today, a lot of them here are imports. Some cars remain popular such as the early Starlets or Golfs for various reasons but the amount of cars gone missing is truly astonishing.

Original scrappage scheme. 1997 I think, got rid of a lot of these as a lot of them would have been 10 plus years old at that time.

My father owned two Simcas in the 50s. Haven't heard of that make since. Big yokes with a full across front seat, removeable back seat and gear lever out of steering housing.

I know they exist, they have just gone so rare from being the biggest selling car in its category for much of the 80's. If I saw a 5 door Sierra I'd stop and look at it tbh.

Near where my father lives there is a BX, 70's Kadett, Austin Maestro and an Uno as daily drivers, all on pre 87 Irish reg numbers. I see them all the time I'm down there but that still doesn't excuse the fact that they are incredibly rare elsewhere.

There was an Orion parked in the car park of a pub near me a few weeks ago, a good number of people went over and looked at it. Thats how rare they are.

No offence Tina but you're going to have to loose the alloys on your Sierra, they look poxy. I would prefer steel wheels with original Sierra wheel covers to them (just my opinion!). ;)

Any 70s or 80s Audi, even the '90s pre "A" models are thin on the ground
mk1/2/3 Polo (curiously there are still a few Derbys around)
mk1/2/3 Fiesta: they used to be everywhere, like bloody cockroaches
any RWD toyota, the starlets used to be a common sight, now only found in the domain of the drifting crowd
    Daihatsu Charade of any description
    Peugeot 106/205/309/405
    Nissan Primera (mk1s)
    Ford Mondeo mk1

E34 BMW 5-series. A very well built, overengineered car. A bit less than 10 years ago, when the early ones were about 15 years old and the last ones nearly 10 years old, they were everywhere. Now they are quite rare. Few of them will make it into classic hood (30+ years) :(

    Mk1 Mondeo.

I still see plenty of them around, went looking for an estate in May and wanted either a W124 or an E34, there were quite a few available.

V480 said the Bluebird, and yes there are very few left, they were the middle class car of its time. School I went to, several teachers had them or the Datsun Violet/140/160. The Sentra/Sunnys have all disappeared too.

Triumph Acclaim sold well here for a while or maybe because there was a dealer nearby but I haven't seen one in ages.

God knows when I last saw an Irish reg E12 or E28, they were never as popular as the W123 but they sold a few here all the same.

MK I Mondeo shouldn't count as its 1993-2000.

I think it can be safely said that any car that finished production 15-20 years ago is a rare sight today. There are some that are more common than others, such as the Nissan Micra K10 and boxy Starlet, but I think this is a general rule with cars here and in the UK.

Aye maybe not the best example as the thread title suggests cars that don't exist anymore now, but I was kinda making the point that 8-9 years ago the most common 15+ year old cars were the W124 and E34. You'd see one of either every day. Not so much now...

well its just my runaround,so its unlikely I'll be doing much to it other than repiring the sills which have a little rust in them.

Is there a Renault 14 or 20 left in the country?

I know a Genuine Irish 20TS in blue that occasionally makes an appearance .
The guy owns it since it was 5 years old. I think he says it was either an ex-Irish Distillers or Bank of Ireland Company Car.

Actually here is a UK Website thats worth a look. I know its UK based but the figures are startling non the less. Type in any car and spec.

Mk1 Mondeo was 1993-1996, they are a very rare sight.

    Even rarer than Sierras.
