Do people actually go to bars they don't know to drink by themselves?

I see this a lot in movies of some guy at an airport bar or somebody in a new area going to a local bar or the classic guy alone at bar and girl also alone sits at bar.


Does this actually happen in real life? I've never known anyone who'd go to a strange bar by themselves, I'm of course not talking about people frequenting a pub they know but just this idea of going to a bar alone to meet people strikes me as odd.

It's not drinking on your own if you bring a newspaper.

if im out on a ride ill stop at a pub I dont know for refreshment - so I suppose sometimes I do drink alone in bars I dont know ...albeit briefly and usually non alcoholically or just one shandy

always thought about doing the film noire ...sam spade ..drink alone at a classy bar pick up some seeming femme fatale with a heart of gold thing but sadly I'm aware that real life just wouldn't compare...would probably end up with juicy lucy and a glass in the face

wouldn't really myself but a lot of people do yes, what harm. Esp in an airport or something, sure they're just killing time.

I do this sometimes. Can be more interesting than "planned" drinking escapedes. OP, If you actually care what others will "think of you" - Heed my no nonsense advice:

I've had to travel a bit for work, usually on my own, and would nearly always find a bar near my hotel to have a drink in, I don't see the big deal. I just bring a book or newspaper, but you nearly always end up chatting to someone anyway.

I always feel a bit sorry for people who would die of embarrassment before they'd have a drink on their own somewhere.

I am a loner and love to drink alone .I like people watching .The OP is a TROLL though .(see her other posts ) .
PS , i live in Thailand now and am finding it hard to have a lonely pint by myself .Some sexy Thai girl is always getting in my face .( i am not complaining though )

Usually sit right at the bar and stare at the person behind it too. Starts getting a bit wired after 7 or 8 pints! More so for them though!

Did it in london once (while actually waiting for someone to text me). Was back in the next nite with a few women from the hostel I was staying at and the barwoman recognised my lonely ass

Loved doing it in my 20s. Going out early to get nicely souped up before later teaming up with the mates. And loved the feeling of the alcohol coursing through my veins as I listened to the jukebox playing MY songs. It felt like the group were singing for me alone.

Call me a weirdo or whatever but I much prefer to drink on my own and have small talk with random strangers. I drink a way more on my own and at my own pace.
