Five held in €1m welfare fraud probe

I know we all talk about this on boards from time to time(like every day:D), but it's only when you see a story like this that you realise what this type of fraud is costing us all.
Five people have been arrested in Dublin as part of an investigation into social welfare fraud.
Gardaí and inspectors from the Department of Social Protection estimate that over €1m has been fraudulently claimed over the past few years...................One individual is believed to have claimed up to €100,000 in his own name and with a false identity and for eight children, even though he only has two.
Don't know how he did the eight kids, obviously he had eight real birth certs?.Brothers with the same name?.

Mods please delete if already up.

The crazy thing is it will probably cost more to put them through the courts and imprison them than to just cut them off completely and blacklist them.

Nigerian nationals is what a member of an Garda Siochaina told me,they got busted apparently applying for so many back to school allowances and welfare sniffed a fraud hence they were caught.

I agree, reclaim all their assets and ban them and all their dependants from ever claiming welfare of any sorts.

Remember the scene from Into the West? A family was making a claim for childrens allowance, the officer actually physically counted them. He was counting kids from all over the neighbourhood!

How they can get away with that in this day and age is a wonder, someone in the SW office should be loosing their jobs!

Sounds good to me on the guilty parties.

Have we the laws to do that?.

Because we don't have a national identity system or fingerprint/photograph identity check for welfare recipients.

Yeah I agree , fingerprints would help big time. Not sure about photograph identity. If they can get birth certs they can likely get those as well.

Got caught when they hesitated to give their bank account details to complete the transaction, I'll bet.

I'm a civil liberties type but I would support finger printing for everyone collecting a welfare payment and not in the SW offices in the Post Office where everyone should collect their payments weekly.

This would include all payments (childrens allowance as well) which should be collected weekly too - if you're not there every week then you're considered absent from the state and cut off.

    Don't like it? GTFO then.

If so they should be put on the next plane straight out of the country, deported and banned from ever setting foot in the EU ever again.

Someone in the SW office was instrumental in detecting the fraud - shouldn't they be rewarded, not sacked?

Going on the figures released earlier in the week it sounds like this is not an exceptional case and is likely to be pretty wide spread.

There's no reason why social welfare cards shouldn't have a photo on them at minimum or at least link to a picture on file.

Say what you will but in my opinion the irish wouldn't do that kind of fraud. If paddy is doing any fraud it would perhaps be a couple of hours work if available to top up his SW payment until a full time position becomes available.

It's actually beyond belief that we do not finger print everyone who is claiming social welfare or any other benefits,at the very least your card should link to a photo of you straight away ffs even Cambodia has this technology at border entries and mist airports.
When you go for social welfare interview you should have a photo taken and each child benefit the child must go with the applicant at least on one occasion each year.
It's crazy when you think we are dealing with billions on this matter, but the usual people have not the balls to go and be controversial by implementing Amy of these strategies.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh No you didn't! It is racist but Nigerians in particular have a global reputation even within Africa as being untrustworthy. And of course there are many decent people but I am a bit narrow minded and can admit it. When I worked in a shop I would be untrusting Romanians and Travellers...Nigerians would just try to scam you other ways in the shop, not by straight out stealing...

In South Africa I believe Nigerians run the big crime gangs there.

In a number of states in the U.S. you have to provide DNA evidence of parenthood in order to claim child support.

I know in 2 of the areas listed it was travellers and not Nigerians, dont know about the other areas.

And the reason SW cards dont have photo id on them is because of the civil liberties people, this has held it up for years. Although they are now passed this and a card with a photo should be rolled out early next year. They will also be recording your voice to store on the computer system apparently.

Bull****. I am foreigner, I newer took a penny from government in 6 years, pay taxes like everyOne else.

I know a bunch or Irish and foreigners who are taking system for a ride. It is disgusting and I freaking hate it. Irish are no better then foreigners when it comes to milking social warfare.

Wasn't there something on rte about social warfare fraud lately?

Very true it's not just south Africa but all of African crime is spear headed by Nigerians and massively on the increase in Europe now the foot soldiers have made it here to sow the seeds for the gangs.
I have to say any negative encounters I have had were with Nigerians or Ghanains,in a previous post I was working with a uni in the Uk dealing with foreign doctors who were required to pass an English language examination before being permitted to practice medicine in the Uk or other fields.
We had strict guidelines and if you turned up without a passport you could not sit the test and must wait 3 mths for a resit.
They all knew the protocol but time after time Nigerians would turn up without a passport and scream at us to be seated, these were doctors etc but they thought by shouting abuse or producing copied documents we would let them sit the exam.
I had to call the police on many occasions as our security staff could not handle them and low and behold we were called racist etc but actually the rule was direct from the Home Office.
When the police followed up with us it turned out the people in over 60% of cases were impostering another person to sit the exam, had a fake passport or were in fact not even permitted to be practicing medicine, countless cases and vast majority Nigerians.

I think most of the African countries learned the art of corruption from their old colonial masters, who used to throw stuff at the big knobs just to keep them on their side.

One guy who was in Nigeria in the 70s was recruited to set up a business, and a lot of specialised machinery had to be shipped into Nigeria to get the venture started. He said that each time he went to the docks after a shipment, he had to pay bribes to several minor officials or the equipment would have disappeared.

He eventually got the factory started, and couldn't get back to the UK quick enough.

i'm glad the Gov seems to be doing something about SW fraud, but really this is peanuts compared to the banking and construction frauds that were/are going on for more than 15 years.
The Gov are more worried about cents than chasing the billions of yoyos that bankers and shady business owe the state.
This Dole fraud is all about smoke and mirrors to distract the public away from the really big frauds going on,typical Irish Gov bull.
Regarding the dole why they dont use biometric scanners baffles me.They are very cheap to operate now.

I agree, but the problem then is, that because of the amount of cash they will be holding on the premises, the Post Offices are targeted by crime gangs to raid, because there are more of them, and they are far less secure than a bank. Easy pickings in most cases.

One solution might be for the post office to issue claimants a cheque, which must then be cashed in a bank. A lot of hassle you might say, but hey, people on the dole will generally have more time on their hands than most.

When these types of people want to call the kids individually she'll use their fathers' surnames.

Incidentally it was Nigerians, heh. Irish people have a lot more to lose by participating in this kind of fraud, so naturally it usually tends to be foreigners. If they are caught and cut off completely, they can just get a flight home and resume the life they left behind. We don't have that option.
