It means Other Ranks. As in, enlisted.

It's something I was thinking about awhile ago but couldn't really come up with anything, can anyone think of any employment restrictions in your home country after your service in a foreign military (BAF, USF, FFL ..etc)...given that you meet all the criteria necessary for the job it's self?

None here, but there are a few interesting jobs in Britain that you can't apply for if you have served in a foreign service, for example the Atomic Weapons Establishment, as well as their Civil Nuclear Constabulary.

Personally speaking, on the whole "OMG BRIT RECRUITERS, DEFENCE ACT ZOMG!" thing. I have no reason to believe British soldiers are actively sent to Irish websites to recruit troops... Let alone that any of them actually post here on boards.ie

I can only speak for myself here but I'm happy to see the lads from across the pond like OS, Tac Foley, SamuelFox etc. posting on here, answering questions and speaking from their experience in the BA to lads who are looking to make the jump to the BA.

As it stands, the DF is barely recruiting and when they do recruit, it'll be from an already determined list of candidates. If lads want to be soldiers, the chances of them being able to join the DF and do so are very slim. I for one, would never begrudge them making the move and any help that the BA lads on here can offer is good in my book.

Well, much though I agree with you, the initial response from the Boards Legal Squad is that we do need to tighten up our conduct a little bit when it gets to the whole 'joining foreign militaries' thing, but not to the extent that it cannot be mentioned. I'll be tweaking the charter a little bit over the next day or two.

I've still yet to see definitive proof about Bunny Shooters allegations that there are posters on here actively recruiting.

If someone comes along here and asks for advice, then i have no problem with someone who either has been there or currently is there giving them advice.

It's not like there is a user on here named "PM Me To Join The BA"

Is boards not open to people in northern ireland though? Just that their military is obviously the BAF. Is it that the servers are in the south that the Defence acts apply?(i don't even know where the servers are, just guessing) If that is the case then all those TV ads about "be the best" and all that should be blocked for irish viewers...should they not? (kinda open question...i'm confused;)

Those are coming off BBC or ITV, aren't they?

Not the BBC, anyway, as they're ad-free. I've never seen a BA recruitment ad here, although through UPC we get a lot of RoI targeted advertising.

you can join the israeli army too. have a look at the mahal. it helps if your jewish

    Not true unfortunatly.
To join the IDF you must be an Israeli citizen (beining Jewish doesnt matter as there are lots of religions in the IDF but you must be a citizen).

Mahal is a volunteer program for Jewish people or people with a Jewish parent or Grandparent living abroad that would like the experience of being in a combat role to either support "the boys back home" or as a pre cursor to emigrating to Israel (its much easier to do this) theres a whole list of requirements before you can get near it, like age etc.)

Then theres Sar El where most forigners go thats a vol. programme to support the defence forces, you will be painting or doing groundskeeping roles never near a gun or anything secret or cool, and will be in one of a number of bases that can accomodate visitors on that programme.
