If you know a really great story you should write that.

how are you supposed to write about something you don't know?

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,104 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

I suspect Dr. Seuss had never met a Lorax.

  • Registered Users Posts: 274 ✭✭PurpleBee

I suspect no one has, i presume that's how he got away with it

Most of what I write is genre. I've never met a werewolf or piloted a starship. If I only wrote about what I know, my stories would be be mostly about mortal civil servants.

I got the feeling his agent asked him to write an action story about whaling, but he really wanted to write an encyclopaedia about whales, so he took the two ideas and mashed them together.

Well if I was a werewolf, I'd probably be horrified by the assumptions most fiction writers make about my lifestyle.

I suppose I'm talking about verifiable stuff... say a kid from Sandymount writing about life in Compton

I believe in werewolves by the way

I believe in reporting and banning spammers, but I'm still tempted to plug my new poetry blog. :pac: Any objections?

The trick is to use the fantastical as your vehicle for a genuine emotional core. Joss Whedon says that Buffy the Vampire Slayer is about feeling like an outsider in high school and struggling through what can feel like a hostile environment that everyone else thinks is normal, which is how he felt in school. So while he was never a cute, short girl with amazing strength, born to fight vampires and demons, he used the sense of alienation he did feel to fuel the story.

A cocktail, a great Limerick pub and several generations of men on my Dad's side!

Nothing would make me panic faster than a talking goat.
