    Hello,

If line Attenuation is 62/31 db with 1Mbps service, will the line be able to handle NGB? I believe we are 3km from Oakpark exchange and have not been switched over as of yet.

    Thanks for your post daelight,

This attenuation is quite high, lower is always better. It's possible your phoneline will be able to handle *NGB, though the line would first need to be tested by eircom engineers. If you're 2.5KM or more from the exchange if will impact on your ability to avail of faster broadband speeds than 1Mb. In many similar cases this type of local loop would be considered as 'Amber' or extended reach.

*NGB, or Next Generation Broadband, is essentially fibre powered broadband, which guarantees consistent download speeds, whatever time of the day, even at peak times. NGB is a free upgrade and is set-up as 'up to' *8Mb (or 'up to'*24Mb in cases).

ADSL is rate adaptive based technology, which means that your broadband connection speed is governed by the distance from your premises to the exchange.. Upgrading to NGB won't change the distance or what your broadband connection pre-qualifies for.

    Best wishes,

That says you'd only ever get a max of just under 2 Meg if you put in the 62 as your downstream attenuation.

Appreciate the fast replies from both Ant@eircom and NeitherJohn - will have a word with local Eircom people if an engineer can take a look. Our area is boarder line of fixed and wireless coverage but at least NGB is in the Tralee area at last.

But Eircom have no plans to roll out the service to Mounthawk or Killerisk in the near future.:( These areas are part of the populated Tralee urban district not some remote rural backwaters.

    Monthawk,,

    In that case ... * facepalm *

That is a shame. Unless WiMAX / LTE can be viable to hardwire broadband in Ireland. If Eircom get some real investment from a new owner?

    Hi Cam2012,

    Thanks for your post.

Can you PM me a local phone number in your area and I will check what exchange your nearby.

It's possible your either on Tralee or Ardfert, though the map is showing you could be over 3KM away in South Listellick.

    Best regards,
    Ant
