markymark21, me and my girlfriend in the same boat...we're arriving in sydney nov 8th and booking into a hostel for a week. we hope to have an apartment and jobs sorted by the end of the week. I don't really have a clue as to whether or not a week is realistic but hopefully it is. my main worry is sorting out a job quick because won't be bringing out too much money....

Guys you are joking right . You expect to have jobs n an apartment after a week . Come on guys live in the real world.

A job n place to say after a month or 2 would be more realistic. Only want everyone to be aware that it's not easy . Prepare for a long wait for jobs n place to stay n if it happens faster all the better.

Just for your own sakes don't come here thinking it'll be sorted in a week a month even .

Australia is good but it's not a quick easy fix for problems n Ireland

Ozeire don't be silly, don't you know there is a special queue at the airport that you can jump into and you will have an apartment and a job straight away?

Also here's the best bit .........they going throw 457 sponsorship in for free. :D:rolleyes:

Bet you feel like a right muppet applying for your Permanent Residence when all you had to jump into the the magical queue.

You forgot the super express queue, you don't even have to stop at customs/immigration, just wave at them as you run to your limo waiting to take you to your 200k mining job..

Alright guys just looking for a bit of advice here! Me and the GF are arriving in St Kilda on the 3rd of November.. We've booked a hostel in for 8 nights and by the end of that stay we're hoping to have work and an apartment sorted. Its going to be a pretty frantic first week i reckon! Just wondering is there anyone else who was in a similar situation? Are we giving ourselves too little time to find a permanent place to stay?

Yes, you are giving yourselves very little time.
Unless you know someone already set up with a flat, you would be extraordinarily lucky to find a place that is furnished? convenient to your place of work and within your price range. If you are arriving from Europe, you may want to consider jet lag happening also.
Plus hostel in Melbourne during Melbourne Cup week, you're being very naive about having it all sussed in that week, it'll be party central.

To give an example, it took me 3 weeks to find a suitable apartment and sign the lease. I had booked a short let for 4 weeks, so another week overlap to try get some furniture delivered etc
It really does take a while to get an apartment, firstly to find one, queue, view it, put in an application, competition with maybe 10 other people, repeat/rinse times 10 maybe?
Find one, they pick you? You must provide references, they will contact Irish references, takes time...
They see you as a foreigner of course, only just arrived in the country, so you are looking at 6 weeks bond (deposit) and 1st months rent up front, or if you really want a particular apartment offer 2 months rent up front.
So if your apartment is $1800 a month? you are looking at the very least handing over $3600 to move into an apartment etc.

It really makes my sides hurt with laughter when people come on boards asking if Immigration will check how much money they have as they will only have something silly like $2000 and expect to rent an apartment, eat and find work..

If you are planning on moving around, seeing Australia? don't bother with renting apartments etc, stick with the hostels. Some nasty ones can be got for $10 a night if you look hard enough.

So to the unrealistic posts above, the 2 of you with gf's, a week or so is way off the mark, make sure you budget for extra time in the hostel you've booked into!

I don't really understand the negativity of the previous posts. There is tons of work here. I'm here a week and i'm starting in the morning. One day solid job hunting yielded 3 jobs. Ok there all sales work but the money is still decent. Everyone i've spoken too - and damn i've spoken to a lot in the past week - Have all found work once they put there mind to it.

Sure getting an apartment that suits is tricky but there's tons of house shares going, just speak to people and you'l get offered something.

Eg this sort of thing - http://melbourne.gumtree.com.au/c-Unit-House-Real-Estate-flat-share-house-share-houseshare-Room-for-2-persons-here-Working-Travellers-welcome-Free-Wifi-W0QQAdIdZ322433396

    Best of luck :)

Must be loads of that type of work, I always get cornered by those selling charity subscriptions on the street by Irish and English back packers. One told me they get $30 per subscription and they already had signed up 2 that day :).

    OH
If it's that type of sales, Seek is FULL of those "jobs".

Well the thing is I work in hospitality, y'know bars, restaurants, hotels etc. The reason I think i'll find work very quickly is that from what I can see on the job sites (seek etc) there are loads of jobs going in this sector in melbourne..especially coming into the summer time. I also know people who have gone to melbourne and found work easy to come by in this sector.

Added to this the fact I currently work as a bar and restaurant supervisor, i've worked in top establishments in London, New York, Florida and Dublin and I graduated with honours with a food and beverage management degree.. Not bad for 22!

Thats the great thing about the industry - if you have a strong work ethic and have good experience you'll find work no matter where you are. The hospitality industry is like that, its a very open sector for certain people.

  • Registered Users Posts: 47 elliott550

those guy's doing the charity work get $17p/h plus $30 bonus per sign up. I don't see why you would feel the need to belittle that.... many thousands in Ireland (and here) are grateful for it. Im working in a call center, not going to discuss my salary but its enough to live very comfortably.

Just playing Devils Advocate. To be honest don't heed whats on Seek . Best place i found was papers.

    what is wrong with seek?
even if i only look at one city and the type of job i do, there are still hundreds of ads,
i dont know a single person who went to australia and didnt get a job, i know there are some people who expect too much, but the job market sounds a whole lot better than ireland
(despite what a few posters may say)

I sorted an apartment by day 5 in Melbourne!
Work however took longer. There are plenty of telemarketing jobs if you are happy to do that kind of work - not really my thing so it's taken me a lot longer to sort something decent. Just managed to land a 7 week contract with decent pay and it's Monday to Friday 9-5! Work isn't as plentiful as you would think but there is work out there. It just takes time to find it.

    .

Are you sharing or did you rent somewhere yourself?

I think (in Melbourne anyway), finding a room in a place to rent is pretty easy but leasing a place yourself involved jumping through hoops.

I think finding a permanent place to stay is gonna be our 1st priority.. We have enough money to keep us going for a while and at least if you have an apartment or whatever ya have a base from which to build from.. Thing is, if you don't like your job you can more, it's a bit harder to move from a house you don't like.. Especially if your tied into a lease

god, how condescending can you get. To everyone coming out, dont be deterred by the above posters. my boyfriend and I both had work sorted by wk 1. Granted, it took us alot longer to find an apartment but thats because we held out for a really nice place. We could have had a place off Gumtree by the end of wk 1. Theres plenty of work if youre willing to look for it.

Myself and my friend are renting together. We found a 2 bed apartment on Exhibition with swimming pool and gym. Went to see it on the Wednesday and moved in on Friday! We found it on www.realestate.com.au

You've done well, nice spot too.

I've heard some bad stories of people leasing apartments/houses.

Will be arriving in perth tomorrow evening from New zealand. gutted to be leaving here but really looking forward to oz and getting some money into my bank account, hopefully anyway :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7 stellapolanski

I have just moved over from NZ and am gutted as well - its such an amazing place to live. Anyway in Melbs now on 5 year visa looking for work. Ive lived in Sydney before for 2 years so have some idea of what it can be like but just seem to be finding it a lot harder this time round. I have never had to use recruitment agencies before but am thinking that I may have to go down that route. It seems that the only options are contract/ short term work and holding out the hope that it will turn into something more permanent when you show them how awesome you are at your job?!

So question is - what kind of methods do you use with these recruitment agencies? Find one that specialises in what you do and stick with them? Mass emailing/calling ALL recruitment agencies and hoping something will come up? Harassment/ stand off and wait??

    Any advice appreciated!

Never heard of a 5 year visa before. What is it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,435 ✭✭✭mandrake04

Permanent residency visa is a 5 year visa, and it only lasts 5 years as well before you require a RRV.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,333 ✭✭✭Zambia

Ah but you don't require a RRV unless you want to leave and come back. Permanent Residence is exactly like it says on the tin permanent.

Well that's how I understand it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,435 ✭✭✭mandrake04

All a visa does is enable a non-citizen to legally enter the country.

If you enter Australia on a PR visa and stay for the rest of your life as a 'Resident' you won't be deported unless the minister cancels your 'Resident status' which he can do (eg. Bad criminal record) so it permanent in that respect. Which I suspect you are eluding to Zambia.

But if for instance you are granted PR and activated/validated etc 19th Oct 2011 and you then fail to move before the end if the visa validation 18th Oct 2016 then the visa has ended and you have to apply again.

If you have been living in Australia for 2 or more years you can apply for a RRV, reason being if you leave Australia and you are not Australian then you need a 'valid visa' to get back in. That why you need a RRV in the first place it has nothing to do with living in Australia.

If You leave Australia on a RRV you have 5 years to return otherwise it runs out and you then you are stuck, unless you can give compelling reasons you won't qualify for another RRV and you would have to apply for PR all over again.

Thousands of people lose PR every year, so is it exactly what it says on the tin? I hardly think so.

    Hi,

I'm going to Perth in January with herself. Were going over to work at the start and then to go travelling. I'm looking to get a job working in accountancy over there. But my main question is ---- what are the good places to live in Perth?? I got told mount lawley or around north perth but prices look expensive when I had a look of them last night. Some of the places were over $500 a week. Does that sound about right?? I just sounds abit expensive to me.

    Cheers
