Id like to try something as well. Condoms have not proved too effective with me, and natural method makes me too paranoid.
Ive been told the pill isnt really safe for me (family history) so what could i use instead?
    Thanks :D

The ius has a different horrormoane then the pill and a smaller dose so as if that may be suitable.

Getting the Implanon Contraceptive Implant tomorrow morning, should I be scared?

Have tried various pills in the past but never found one to suit me, here's hoping this will be good for me without to many bad side effects :(

No need to be scared. You will feel a sting with the anesthetic, but after that you won't feel a thing. It all takes less than 2mins.

I had it for 1.5 years. First 8-9 months were great - no period, no crazy moods swings that I suffer badly with on any form of the pill, no period, no having to remember to take a pill, no worries.
Then I finally got a period...and it never stopped. I would go 8 weeks bleeding non stop, it would stop for 2 or 3 days, and then start again. I don't even know how it was possible to bleed that much!
Finally took it out and everything settled down.

But that was just me - everyone will react differently. Some people get on great with it.
You can only try and see how it works for you.

For anyone who wants to go hormonal but is worried they'd forget the pill I'd suggest trying the patch! My doctor suggested either that or NuvaRing and, for me, the patch sounded the more attractive of the two. On it over a year now and no side effects at all (asides from the odd mood swing). Once you figure out where best suits you in terms of placing it it's so easy. It's on the more expensive end of the scale (around €22 per month) but the peace of mind is worth it for me.

One thing I will say about the patch, is if you have any sort of mood disorder, or are affected by hormones in any way....don't go for the patch.

I think i mentioned before in this thread that I tried it. (I had tocome off it in the end because i was getting symptoms of blood clots.) It is a very attractive choice, but what the doctor might not tell you is that you are exposed to 60% more estrogen in the patch then you are on the pill. It turned me into a psycho, my boyfriend and i almost broke up over it. I was just ranting and crying all the time. Since coming off I've been diagnosed with depression too.

Not saying this will happen to everyone, but its something to consider when dealing with hormones!

I have been on the pill for about 8 years, changed quite a few times but never took a break! Never had any issues with it, found I was more suited to some!

However have decided to go for Mirena, I am getting it fitted this Friday! I had quite a long chat with the doctor she has fitted thousands she said! So that puts my mind at rest, hoping it is a good decision as I know I don't want kids for a while still! Just a tad nervous but hoping it suits me! Will let you know!

So I'm off the pill about 6 weeks now, and I don't notice much difference, although I've lost a bit of weight. I don't know if it's related though! I am having weird bleeding, like I shouldn't have my period now but I do. I dunno.

All types of hormonal contraception make the lining of the womb thinner over the course of a cycle, so there is less to come away when you have a 'period' so yes both times of contraceptive implant the implannon and the mirena I.U.S. can cause lighter periods.

Hi All - I've been using the nuvaring very successfully for years, and I have no issues with it other than I'm one of the unfortunate few that have a skin reaction; Chloasma a dark skin discoloration on my face, and being very pale this is now very noticable.

I thought long and hard and decided to try the diaphram, only to find out that my usual doc doesn't fit them and that they are quite hard to get. In the mean-time she has also put me on the pill Cerazette, as it is progestogen-only pill, and it's apparently the estrogen levels in the nuvaring that cause the skin reaction.

So two questions - does anyone know where I can get fitted for the diaphram in Dublin? Also I'd love to hear anyone's experience with Cerazette, as none of my friends use it.

Either the IFPA or the well woman's clinic will do referral re diaphragms.

I was on the pill for about 8 years and thought it would be a good idea to let my body get back to normal as I'd like to get pregnant in the next few years, and just not comfortable with artificial hormones anymore.
I've been using Persona for the last 18 months or so and finding it great. However, it wouldn't be the end of the world if I got pregnant so its probably a better solution for someone who's in that frame of mind. Don't know if I would trust it if pregnancy was a definite no no!

Ive been on the pill for 8 years straight without a break so decided to give my body a break, using the withdrawl method now and hopin to god nothing happens altough wouldnt be the end of the world if it did but i think 8 yrs is quite a long time to be on it. have also heard some ppl are quite moody and in bad form on the pill im wondering if any of that is true ! has to effect u in some way cant be good for yrs on end!

So I got my mirena yesterday! I was so nervous going in but my doctor was brilliant, the whole thing took about 10 mins with one small pinch and then one very strong cramp and then done!! I felt fine afterwards had some cramps for about 2 hours and then felt completely normal no nausea or anything! Also my period stopped about 4 hours after it was placed which was a surprise and still no sign of it a day later! I have to go for an ultra sound in 4 weeks so they can check it has not moved and other than that the doctor said just come back if you want to have a baby before the 5 years is up! My doctor told me to expect a few weeks of spotting and then my periods may stop altogether :D I feel really good today and feeling positive about it! I can update and let you know if I feel the same in a few weeks!

    Hey,
well you need to get a perscription from your doc first for it, most chemists, if they dont stock it, can get it in within a few days depending on where you live.
It cost 395 euro last time i got it, but if you are on the drug payment scheme you only pay 120euro & the rest of your meds are free for that month. It seems alot of money but if it suits you then it lasts 3 years so personally I felt it was worth it!
then its just your usual dr fee on top!
    Good luck!

Okay I had no idea what a drug payment scheme was until I went to the chemist this morning.
So for any other ladies who are considering getting this thing: if you are not on the DPS, bring your pps number and details and you can sign some "emergency application form" for it there and then, which is what I had to do this morning. Otherwise it would have cost 250 euro; with the DPS it's 120.
    just so you all know...!

Wondering if anyone can help me with this.

I'm due to start the pill for the first time at the end of the week at some stage. I'm aware that you're meant to start it on the first day, but when? Do you start taking it as soon as you see any sign of a bleed? I want to be able to take it in the morning time as it's easier to remember, but what if the period doesn't start until the evening? Do I take it that evening, and then take it the next morning? Sorry if this is confusing!:o

If your period starts in the evening then start the pill the next morning.

i was put on the pill(microlite)for medical reasons. It disagreed with me.I had terrible breakthrough bleeding i was bleeding for nearly the entire month.I was then put on ovranette and i think its brilliant :)When i take the 7 day break i only bleed for a day on the 6th day break.

Just thought I'd row in with my experience with the Mirena Coil. ...In the end had to get it out in Mt Carmel in a day proceedure...thus Mr Boomchicawawa is seeing his doctor about a little proceedure himself :D

+1 - Same as me. Only my coil was only in 3 weeks.

Very atypical experience, I think I was the only one my hospital had ever experienced, but 1:10,000 people do have migrating coils. And unfortunately, in my case, it wasn't a day procedure to get it out.

I'm 31 and have had 2 kids. My husband & I are 100% done with kids & we have eventually fought our way (against the GP/medical world) to getting him a referral for the snip. Male snips are greater contraception than female sterilization, but my doc did agree to snip me if that's what we decided.

Also, is there a specific time-span that the pill should be taken within after the start of the period? Microlite is what I'll be on.

Well i got prescribed the nuvaring, but im a bit worried about putting it in.
Also i suffer a lot from thrush anyway, so hoping this wont make it worse :(

How long were you on Microlite before you decided to change? I recently started it for the first time (today is day 12) and its been a bit of a nightmare tbh.
I've been getting horrible, painful bleeding every day since I started taking the pill and I'm also really sore 'down there'. I'm thinking this is probably normal though. Maybe i'm just not used to this because I'm used to light, 3-day periods?

I took the morning after pill like 5 days before I started on Microilte so I thought maybe the symptoms were down to all the extra hormones? I did ask the doctor whether it would matter that I had just taken the MAP, but she said no.

Soooo yeah, I'll just be sticking it out and hoping it gets better lol.

I took it for about two months. You can get breakthrouh bleeding the first month when taking it.You shouldnt be getting that much bleeding see if it continues in the second month. No it wouldnt be related to the map.Take it for another month and if it continues go back to the doctor.

I am 19, and I've recently come off the pill as it was making me a bit psycho! Anyone know if a doctor would be reluctant to fit the IUD for me?

I know I'm quite young to be considering it, but I'm very wary of hormonal contraception, and I definitely don't want kids for the next 7 years at least!

As for barrier contraception, condoms are a given but the cap etc. are just too much fuss for me!

    Emily.
You may be better seeking advice of doctor at a Family Planning clinic rather than a GP-some GPs tend to recommend same old same to their patients, whereas in FPCs, they have more specialised experience and will really take your past history and preferences into consideration while advising you.

I've been on the pill in the past, but won't be rushing back to take it.

At the moment, as I'm breastfeeding, Im relying on that as a contraceptive. We've only really started .. being intimate.. very recently, and this method should be good for another couple of months at least.

I'm going to look into natural family planning.

My cousin got pregnant when breasting, I wouldn't rely on that completely...unless you're planning another little bundle of joy:)
