"So Patsy, do you have the semtex and timers ready for Saturday?"

"I don't know Mick, I'm after seeing this video on youtube where a load of people wrote stuff on their arms and now I'm not so sure."

"Really? A youtube video? Send me the link."

There is so much wrong with our country at the moment, it is hard to know where to start to "fix" it.

Having a sense of unity and community is a great start.

Mick, sure we have never listened to them or valued their opinion.

Patsy, grand so then. Anyway what do you make of City winning the Cup.

Mick, do not care as long as United won the league I am happy. We are the better club.

To be fair, it is a bit cryptic.

It's just a general peace and unity video then?

I usually read the back first. Nothing in the youtube comments or the thread suggested it was about peace and unity, which is an assertive statement. I could only presume it was anti-something, since "not in my name" lends itself only to negative statements. Waterboarding: Not in my Name, or something similar.
Anyway, enough. I know now (or now know?) that it's Peace and Unity: Not in My Name. ;) Or something. I might just skip to the end next time and find out for sure.

Wow, an anti physical force republican video, how remarkable.

Do people really kid themselves into thinking a video like that would make a difference? Like they think a facebook page or an online petition will save the gays in Uganda?

Is saying nothing better? The majority of people on the island are sick and tired of the violence and the killing. The sooner the terrorists are part of history the better.

The only time these "terrorists" will be part of history is when the illegal partition of this island is brought to an end.

However in the meantime leaving them out in the cold sure as hell wont help. Giving them propaganda by mistreating prisoners wont. Ignoring issues with the PSNI wont. etc, etc etc

People should concentrate on addressing the causes of the conflict and try to mitigate them as much as possible rather than making a video in order to allow them to sit back and bask in moral supremacy pretending they did something constructive in trying to heal wounds.

The majority of us were sick of it 20 years ago, and longer too. But the men who killed in our name then, against our expressed will, are now elected to our national parliament, despite there continued insistence that their fascist behaviour in the past was justified.

We can say "not in my name" all we want. But these boyos can look to our history and see that they need only wait a few years and a bit of revisionism will appreciate them as the true "patriots" that they are.

Ironic seeing as the 'freedom fighters' are holding their own people prisoner and the vast majority don't see them as such.

Great you put terrorists in parentheses. Maybe put "illegal" in them too. It would be more objectively accurate. You're unreal. You really are. I've seen you thank a post that justified the killing of touts. Somebody's mother no less. How odious and bereft of logic and bereft of soul and bereft of simple humanity a worldview you support. At least you're young. Hopefully age will grey the edges of your black and white received thinking.

The biggest cause of the conflict today? A minority of twats. Simple as that. Twats. On both sides.
    DeVore wrote: »

Not quite. It was far less the online stuff. These guys really don't give a damn about a million e signatures. The do give a damn when the US state dept suggests they'd look unfavourably tradewise on Uganda and makes noises about cutting international aid. That was what actually made them give a damn.

Plus it was only dropped for the current session of parliament, it may well come back in a more US palatable form or when the next moral outrage takes up the news. Memories can be short.

With the Norn Iron question? I remember not in my name type marches with actual people taking to the streets in the 70's and 80's and the fcukwits on both sides kept up the killing. When you start up a paramilitary organisation/freedom fighters/terrorist group, you attract the young, the politically motivated, the rebel, the dreamers, the killers and the criminals. After the political and social reasons for kicking off paramilitary organisations are largely gone or diffused enough that most people just want to live their daily lives, what you have left is usually a core of criminals, killers and people who want to watch it all burn.

No amount of youtube videos or online petition signing is gonna do a damn thing about that. I agree with wolfetone on that point. It's gone beyond that point. Makes people feel better about themselves for watching and or signing something. Nothing wrong with that and it is better than nothing, but it's hopelessly naive to think it'll stop anything. Has anyone's actual back and forth debate with Wolfetone or KeithAFC changed their tune one little bit? No and they're not killers and psychos. Indeed even if Wolfetones ilk found a genie in a bottle and in the morning magically their "illegal" partition was over and the Unionists magically all took the ferry to Stranraer you would still have a core of nutjobs wanting to cause mayhem and they'd find another banner to march behind.

What will stop it? Hard nosed police work and judicial sentences. And time. But like the poor we have to accept we will always have psychos looking for a banner, any banner as an excuse.

No they didn't. Female MPs walked out over an entirely different bill last Wednesday, meaning the anti-gay bill couldn't be debated.

It then ended up not being debated at all, and now this Ugandan parliament has concluded.

Lots of places are reporting that this was due to international pressure, this likely had some effect, but much of it is mere speculation IMO.

And to say an online petition was largely the cause of it is completely laughable.

It could, and probably will be brought up again by the new parliament later this year. It's been shelved, not dropped.

    Is it though?

It's "lacktivism", and I think it's potentially harmful to good causes. If people think they're doing a small part to help a cause by signing an online petition, or changing their facebook picture or whatever, then there's a chance that less people will actually stand up and do something practical for that cause.

True enough, though it might get more to stand up that otherwise wouldn't because they feel there's support, even if it's online. Online communities are bloody valuable as the Iranian example showed.

Here? In this country? Not so much. We've been too long a culture of keyboard warriors since long before there were even keyboards.

Less of the condescending crap please. Don't fall off that high horse.

I wrote "terrorists" because I think thats a stupid word to use and I don't agree with it. Its meaningless.
I've made it abundantly clear that I don't support them.

Jean McConville I guess? I guess you missed the bit where I said she should have been ran out rather than disappeared? The lowest of the low sell their own people out, especially when you consider her own son was a member of the INLA(I believe[turns out it was the Official IRA, then in 74 the INLA]) who was imprisoned.

The cause is the same as it has ever been, only difference is most people of a republican mindset think the GFA will deliver a UI.
Hard nosed police work and judicial sentences.
