    Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings

A Netflix anthology series based on Dolly's songs.

Julianne Hough, Kimberly Williams-Paisley & Dallas Roberts Cast In ‘Jolene’ Episode Of Dolly Parton’s Netflix Anthology Series

Julianne Hough (Grease: Live!, Footloose), Kimberly Williams-Paisley (Nashville) and Dallas Roberts (Insatiable) are set to star alongside Dolly Parton in Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings: Jolene, an episode of Netflix’s upcoming eight-episode anthology series, which showcases the stories, memories, and inspirations behind Parton’s most beloved songs. All eight episodes will launch at once in 2019.

Based on Parton’s Grammy-winning classic, the “Jolene” episode, filmed in Atlanta, tells the story of an unexpected friendship between two very different women who find themselves part of the iconic love triangle, ultimately impacting each other’s lives in profound ways.

Hough will play Jolene, a flirtatious free-spirit with aspirations of escaping her small hometown of Coventry, GA to follow her dreams of becoming a successful singer-songwriter.

Parton will play Babe, a sparkly force of nature and the proud proprietor of Baby Blue’s, a local honky tonk with a notorious reputation for its scantily-clad waitresses and eclectic crowd. Babe plays mother hen to all her waitresses, but none are closer to her than Jolene.

Williams-Paisley will portray Emily, a devoted wife and mother who starts a new chapter of her life as the president of the Coventry’s Women’s League. In her search for personal fulfillment and purpose, she’s pulled into Jolene’s orbit.

Roberts will play Aaron, a loving husband and father wrestling with the marathon of marriage as well as the imminent threat of a mid-life crisis.

Scored by new and classic Parton music, each stand-alone episode in Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings will begin with an introduction by Parton talking/singing to camera (as herself) about the meaning behind each song. Each episode will feature a different cast and Parton will star/guest star in some stories.

The series is produced by Magnolia Hill Productions and Sandollar Productions in association with Warner Bros Television where Magnolia Hill has a deal. Patrick Sean Smith executive produces and serves as showrunner. Longtime collaborators Parton and Sam Haskell also executive produce.

Under a similar deal at NBC, Parton and Haskell produced the movie Coat Of Many Colors, based on Parton’s song, which was watched by almost 16 million viewers, and its sequel, Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love. They aired as holiday specials in 2015 and 2016, respectively.

Released 45 years ago, Jolene is one of Parton’s signature songs. It has remained relevant as it’s embraced by a new generation of singers and fans through Parton’s collaborations with her goddaughter Miley Cyrus and, most recently, Pentatonix. Additionally, Cyrus’ interpretation of the song has nabbed 160 million viewers on YouTube alone.

The Ranch renewed for a 4th season by Netflix.
Netflix has renewed its multi-camera comedy series The Ranch for a fourth season. Like the previous three seasons, it is believed to consist of 20 episodes.

Original series regular cast members Ashton Kutcher, Sam Elliott and Elisha Cuthbert are said to be back, joined by recent cast addition Dax Shepard, who was added as a recurring guest star in the second half of the third season (Part 6) following the exit of co-lead Danny Masterson over allegations of sexual misconduct. Shepard likely will continue to recur as he awaits word on the fate of the Fox comedy pilot Bless This Mess, in which he stars.

I hear Debra Winger, who has not been in every episode of The Ranch, is expected to make multiple appearances. While on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, last night, Winger let slip that the series might have been renewed.

“It’s back,” she said. “There are 20 new ones being shot. I may or may not be in them.”

Created by Don Reo and Jim Patterson, The Ranch was the first comedy series produced by Netflix and the first to introduce 20-episode seasons for multi-camera series split into two half-seasons. Netflix has not set a premiere date for the second half of Season 3, aka Part 6.

Set in present day on a Colorado ranch outside Denver, the show follows Colt’s (Kutcher) return home after a brief and failed semi-pro football career to run the family ranching business with his father Beau (Elliott). Winger plays Colt’s mother, Maggie, and Cuthbert co-stars as Abby (Colt’s soon-to-be wife)

    Alex Rider

‘Das Boot’ Director Andreas Prochaska To Helm Sony’s ‘Alex Rider’ TV Adaptation
The director, who was behind the camera for the Sky drama that was recently picked up by Hulu, will direct and exec produce the first four episodes of the teen superspy drama.

The show is heading to the small screen after Sony’s international production and distribution divisions teamed up to greenlight an eight-episode series. Sony Pictures Television’s International Production and Worldwide Distribution divisions have teamed up together for the first time to pick up an original spec series. They are working with British indie Eleventh Hour Films, which optioned the screen rights to Horowitz’s novels last year.

The novels, written by Foyle’s War creator Anthony Horowitz, chart the adventures of a reluctant teen superspy on his missions to save the world. The twelfth book in the Alex Rider series, Nightshade, is due to be published in 2019; the books have sold over 19 million copies and are particularly popular among young adult male readers. Alex Rider was previously adapted as a feature film in 2006 with The Weinstein Company.

The television adaptation does not currently have a broadcaster attached, although British commercial broadcaster ITV was previously involved. The series will be written by The Borgias and The Hole writer Guy Burt and will begin with Point Blanc, the second book in the series. EHF’s Eve Gutierrez and Jill Green will executive produce the TV series alongside Horowitz and Burt. Casting is set to begin by the end of the year.

Prochaska said, “Within the first few pages of reading Guy Burt’s compelling scripts for the series I was hooked. Guy has taken Anthony’s brilliant, well-loved character and created a bold and unique concept, a coming of age story set in the clandestine world of spies sure to excite fans and newcomers alike. It’s great to be working with Eve, Jill and the Eleventh Hour team along with Sony Pictures Television on such a thrilling show. I can’t wait to get started.”

The Purge renewed for a second season.
The series, a co-production with Blumhouse Television and Universal Cable Productions, is currently the network’s No. 1 drama, averaging 2.3 million viewers in Live+7 ratings and 1.2 million in the key 18-49 demo.

“USA Network is so proud to be the television home for the iconic franchise The Purge,” said Chris McCumber, President, Entertainment Networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment. “The partnership and creative trust of Jason Blum and everyone at Blumhouse Television and Universal Pictures ensured The Purge’s successful transition from film to TV – and, along with Universal Cable Productions, we look forward to digging even deeper into the mythology in Season 2.”

The series revolves around a 12-hour period when all crime, including murder, is legal. Set in an altered America ruled by a totalitarian political party, Season 1 follows several seemingly unrelated characters living in a small city. As the clock winds down, the characters are forced to reckon with their past as they discover how far they will go to survive the night.

Film franchise creator James DeMonaco is executive producer with Thomas Kelly, Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, Andrew Form and Sebastien K. Lemercier.

“James Demonaco has done it again — the propulsive and compelling story he crafted for Season 1 of The Purge truly resonated with audiences in a significant way,” said Jason Blum. “We are thrilled to embark on Season 2, and can’t wait to bring more of James’ vision to USA and fans of The Purge.”

    Explorers

Cary Fukunaga & David Lowery Turning 1985 Film ‘Explorers’ Into TV Pilot At Paramount Television

    EXCLUSIVE:
Cary Fukunaga and David Lowery are teaming to write a pilot script for Paramount Television based on the beloved 1985 Joe Dante-directed Explorers, the coming-of-age sci-fi film that starred Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix. Fukunaga and Lowery will write the script and bible, and one of them will direct the pilot should it get to that.

Both filmmakers are busy: Fukunaga, who just directed and exec produced the first season of the Jonah Hill-Emma Stone series Maniac for Netflix, is next directing Daniel Craig in the 25th James Bond film. Lowery, fresh off The Old Man and the Gun, just signed on to direct the fantasy epic The Green Knight for BRON Studios and A24. On the TV side, he directed the first two episodes of Strange Angel.

Paramount Pictures released Explorers, about a boy obsessed with ’50s sci-fi aliens movies who has a recurring dream about a blueprint of some kind. He draws it for his inventor friend and with the help of a third pal, they end up building a spaceship. That will be the basis for the aspirational dramatic series.

    The 4400

‘The 4400’ Reboot In the Works At the CW
A cult sci-fi series is eying a comeback. The CW is developing a The 4400, a reimagening of the 2004 USA Network drama. It hails from Craig Sweeny, who got his break as a writer on the original series, Justified alum Taylor Elmore and CBS TV Studios where both are under deals.

The 4400 reboot will be co-written and executive produced by Elmore and Sweeny, with Elmore serving as showrunner as Sweeny is running his new CBS/CBS Studios series The Code.

Over the course of recent history, four thousand four hundred young adults in their reproductive prime have gone missing all over the world—some disappearances happened as recently as a few weeks ago, while others date as far back as the infamous day the Soviets launched the Sputnik satellite in 1957. One day in 2019, all 4,400 show up at the sites of their original abductions. None of them have aged a day; none have any memory of where they’ve been. The so called “4400” must grapple with their return to a changed and hostile world… and also contend with the reality that they’ve come back altered in ways that none of them yet understand.

The 4400, created by Scott Peters and René Echevarria, was part of the first wave of series under USA’s renewed push into original programming in the early 2000s. It followed the successful launches of The Dead Zone and Monk as the network was exploring different genres, including sci-fi, before focusing squarely on blue-sky procedurals.

The 4400, which starred Joel Gretsch and Jacqueline McKenzie, Mahershala Ali and Patrick Flueger, quickly developed a following and ran for four seasons, until the network moved away from genre. It remained a cult favorite and a title in the CBS TV Studios library that the studio brass had been keen on revisiting.

Since The 4400, there have been several other series about the unexplained return of people presumed dead, including The Returned and this season’s Manifest.

In addition to The 4400, the CW is rebooting another cult series this development season, soap The LA Complex.

Sweeny was on The 4400 for its entire four-season run, starting as a writer and rising to supervising producer. He went on to work on Medium and Elementary and to create/exec produce CBS/CBS Studios’ Limitless and co-create/exec produce the upcoming The Code. He is repped by WME and Jackoway Austen.

Missed the part that it was CW. Explains why everyone is now a young person instead of the range before. But if it means we get 44 times the number of attractive ladies that's in The 100 then I'm all for it.

Seriously though, was a fan of the original. But like it said, the mysterious return with powers thing is already happening with Manifest, which I've given up on

I had read about it earlier alright. However, if that's the case (that they are picking it up where the series ended), I don't see where they can go with it seeing as so many of the main/best characters have been killed off and the storyline was finished - even Cranston doesn't seem keen on it, not sure about Aaron Paul.

I'm very hesitant about this, because in order to justify doing a movie about what happens after the show, the events in the movie will have to be fairly dramatic/serious, which in particular means putting the likely central character of the movie
    Jesse
    through more turmoil.

    Black Hammer

Legendary Developing ‘Black Hammer’ Comic Series For TV & Film
Legendary Entertainment is taking a big swing with Black Hammer, Jeff Lemire’s award-winning comic book series, which is envisioned as the source material for both film and television projects.

Lemire will serve as an executive producer with Dean Ormston, the co-creator and illustrator of the Black Hammer comic series, which Oregon-based Dark Horse Entertainment has been publishing since 2015. The acclaimed series has been nominated for eight Eisner Awards and won two, including Best New Series in 2017.

Black Hammer chronicles the surreal struggles between the heroes and villains in eerie Spiral City and in some ways follows in the genre-challenging footsteps of DC Comics’ Watchmen and Image’s Astro City as a dark deconstruction of traditional superhero mythologies.

Legendary has made a name for itself with comic-book adaptations, including the Spartan epic 300 from Dark Horse and Zack Snyder’s 2009 big-screen adaptation of Watchmen, the Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons saga that is widely considered one of the definitive masterpieces of the comic book medium.

Legendary launched its brand in 2005 with Batman Begins, the first of three Christopher Nolan films set in Gotham City.

Lemire has won acclaim also for the graphic novels Sweet Tooth and Essex County, the latter being developed for screen adaptation by CBC. Lemire is in demand these days: Sony Pictures is developing two other Lemire projects (Descender and A.D.: After Death) while Anonymous Content is developing his supernatural tale The Underwater Welder, with Ryan Gosling co-producing and directing. Waypoint Entertainment is developing Plutona, with Lemire writing the screenplay.

    Wild Cards

2 TV Series Based On George R.R. Martin’s Books In Works At Hulu
George R.R. Martin’s popular Wild Cards book series is getting closer to the small screen. The project, from Universal Cable Prods., has been set up at Hulu, and a writers room is about to open for two new series that would create a Wild Cards universe for the streamer.

The two series will be written and executive produced by The Secret Circle creator Andrew Miller, who is under an overall deal with UCP. Melinda Snodgrass, Vince Gerardis and Martin will executive produce.

Set in the present, the series explores the aftermath of an alien virus, released over Manhattan in 1946 that killed 90% of those it infected. In the survivors, DNA was altered, creating grotesque physical deformities, except for a tiny percentage who develop super human powers instead. Called the Wild Card virus, it has passed down through generations, and can go undetected until suddenly activated by a traumatic event — at which point the carrier is either killed, mutated or granted god-like powers. Effects that are largely a manifestation of the victim’s emotional state, making them vulnerable to reverence or ridicule on a deeply personal level. Now, after decades of sociological turmoil, having been worshipped, oppressed, exploited and ignored… Victims of the virus want to define their own future.
