Ronoc - we might have passed each other this morning. So beautiful to climb but I was under-gloved for the descent & could have done with a thermal jockstrap.

I think I was on the way back down military road? I was on a black Trek. Scenery was awesome.

The descent was bitterly cold. Regretted not bringing a jacket!

Great day for Ballyhoura, patches of ice made things interesting to say the least.

Up the top of Brigsteer climb in Kendal this morning. Fairly steep climb. Lovely looking day but a lot of ice covering most of the roads.

Several from early 2013 - was actually my first venture up to the Featherbeds IIRC. Wish I had a few more up to date shots but haven't had the willpower to go against the cold up there lately!

Does anyone have the canal route on Strava or a blogpost or anything like that please? Or even which canal it is so I can look at it on Google maps :D

I assume you wont be doing it on 700c wheels?

I pick up the Grand canal on the junction of Dolphin's barn and Davit rd here, though you could pick it up at many places further on. Once on the canal, just follow the brown signs marked Grand canal way. You change sides at couple of places, so make sure you go to the side with the sign any time you cross a road.

Yesterday I was on my Kellys NEOS hybrid, 700c wheels 38mm studded knobbly tyres @60psi. I'd say you'd have serious problems on slicks in the mud, and your hands would suffer on high pressure narrow tyres. MTB, hybrid or cross bike would be fine, road bike maybe in the summer after dry weather but hard going. I also found the low gears very useful to keep spinning (in both senses of the word) in the mud.

    Edit: Route; http://www.irishtrails.ie/trail/Grand-Canal-Way/18/

Here's a spin I did a couple of months back, includes the canal near Robertstown to Sallins and then on as far as Inchicore. There are other possible routes, but I think the 'main' canal route would be Sallins to Inchicore for most people. I've done this route on my cross and mountain bikes and would certainly not attempt it on 700c road wheels. It's also more enjoyable in the summer months..

I did sections of this and of the Royal last september on the Audax Ireland 5 Aquaducts. I was on 26" x 35mm slicks while others were on various tyres ranging from 26" x 40mm knobbly to 700c x 23mm slicks. Weather was (and had been) dry so going was good.

I covered some of the Royal a few weeks ago, but found Deep Sinking pretty hairy in current conditions, even with the knobblies. Been eyeing up the 5 aquaducts and may give it a go if I can muster some fitness between this and then.

18 im surprised at you, I was of the understanding that the bike is supposed to form the integral part of these photos and should not to be found dumped in the roadside ditch like some sort of afterdark roadkill...

It's somewhere on that road between Roundwood and Enniskerry...

First spin out on the new Canyon, today short 25k. Legs were tired and sore from the previous week but could still feel it was quick as hell. First proper road bike and oh my days is it good. Carbon bottle cages and barfly for the 810 on the way. Must search out a decent compact saddle bag. Can't wait for a lengthy spin and hit the hills. Huge thanks to Unknown Soldier for help in reassuring myself I was going for the right size...and bike.

    Thanks man!
She's a 51cm and I'm 5'7" (171cm). Next size down is a 47.5, ideally I needed something in between but the 51 felt spot on today despite the bigger drop.

Nice looking bike SG and well equipped. Fizik do a range of small saddle bags that clip directly onto their saddles. Even though it conflicts with Rule 29 and the aesthetes of this parish, it's a neat option.

Thanks dude. Pulled my finger out after that post and had a dig around, found this Scicon bag that fits exactly what I had in my mind. Had something similar made by conti and it fell apart...I presume.
