A police officer is understood to have been caught up in the incident.

The device exploded under the vehicle outside his home in Highfield Close, off the Gortin Road, in Omagh, Co Tyrone, just before 4pm today.

A police officer is in a critical condition after a bomb exploded under his car in Omagh, County Tyrone.

The device exploded under the vehicle outside his home in Highfield Close, off the Gortin Road, just before 1600 BST on Saturday.

It is not clear if there have been any other casualties.

Since 2007, dissidents republican have planted dozens of booby-trap bombs under the private cars of police officers.

The bombs usually fail to detonate and have killed nobody.

But two policemen have lost their legs in attacks in May 2008 and January 2010.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-12947225

Can we simply not move on.

    :(

Seriously, for this to happen once is disgusting, but for these degenerates to ignore the hurt and suffering the people of Omagh had to go through over the decades and to do it again?

I would like to see a link to the story, but if this is true, let all those involved in this attack suffer an incredibly violent and painful death...

I await the "usual suspects" to arrive shortly to defend the indefensible.

Stupid IRA Bastards. You don't speak for me or most of Ireland - just give it the fúck up. Do they actually think this will make a difference, that the UK government will roll over and just hand NI back to us (even if we could afford it  ). It doesn't work like that.

Well at least that's something. Best of luck to him.

What are these thugs trying to achieve now? Things have moved on. Scumbags looking for an excuse to be scumbags

Absolute scumbags, hope the policeman is ok

Savages. Its if they are trying to celebrate what happened in 99. Why Omagh? We need to crush these people and the sicko left wing political groups that support them.

    Bastards.
How anyone could support them leaves me astounded.

Reported that a young man has lost his life on Sky News

Some poor young fella who did nothing but join the psni probably

He continued, 'Sinn Féin is determined that those responsible will not set back the progress of the Peace and Political Process'
...but we won't be helping to catch the guy. Also we won't be giving the police the info about who butchered Robert McCartney'.

It will be a good few years yet before many of us will be able to take SF seriously when it comes to condeming terrorism or catching murderers.

Any bombing is reprehensible, but to plant a bomb in Omagh, of all places?
Shows the level of these people's intelligence.
Not in my name you cowards.

i'm guessing you're talking of SF

Statement from Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams on the bomb in Omagh: "Firstly I want to condenm what happened in Omagh this afternoon.

While not all of the infromation has yet come to light in relation to this incident it is understood that a young man has lost his life. I want to send my condolences to his family at this hugely traumatic time.

Sinn Féin is determined that those responsible will not set back the progress of the Peace and Political Process'."

SF condemn their actions as they're invested in the peace process

SF constantly tell people to ring the PSNI if they suspect occurence of these incidents.

Someone has died, if you want to SF bash go do it elsewhere..

You don't think that SF's record of defending the murders of police officers and their refusal to fully support the PSNI is not relevant here? Or their unwillingness to help bring other murderers to justice?

You may think so, but non-Shinners may disagree.

I dont understand why these people can simply not move on, the troubles, the violence, the bombs, should all be consigned to history by now.

The current generations should not be faced with this, and whilst there are those that are easily influneced by this kind of thing, there will never be peace on this Island.

Neither the SKY, BBC, or RTE sites are reporting a death, all saying he's critical. Either way, hope he pulls through to a recovery.

It's confirmed that an officer who recently completed his training has died. Comfirmed on several news stations.

Thoughts and prayers with his family and the police family.

There are no sufficient words of condemnation

Yeah, BBC have just confirmed it too. May he rest in peace.

Agreed. Perhaps this will move some parties in NI to stop spouting empty words and to actually help catch the terrorists. I'm not holding my breath though.

I fear they'll never catch them all. Whilst there is a small minority to spout this ridiculous so called cause, or what ever you want to call it, to people people stupid enough to listen and take it on, we will always have this.

I used to think the future generations even the currnet, would only know about these acts of violence in their history books, unfortunatly there will always seem to be those intent on never letting go of something, for some of them was long long before they were born.

    :(

Yeah, let's pretend that if this was happening in the 90's, the Shinners wouldn't have been defending it as part of 'the war' instead of condemning it now that they are drawing salaries from the British state.

Some people don't have a clue.

    :(

Unfortunately so, although things are much improved i fear there will always be a destructive element in NI. Personally i am a catholic and feel that integration is slowly succeeding. I have many friends on both sides of the spectrum and this is the case with most of us.
Stuff like this makes me depressed, i have 2 friends working in omagh in the police and both are catholic. my brother is in the royal irish and my dad is an ex cop.
Condolences to this guys family, a waste of a young mans life for nothing
