What strikes me as odd is that I would have expected someone as an outgoing SU sabbat would have the profile and experience to get elected as president.

What is even more odd is that if they are elected to one of the other two sabbatical positions then they would be serving under a less experienced SU president.

Do they not have the interest in the role? Or do they not have the confidence that they could win it?

Bingo. There was talk of Collie going for Pres when Ed was a bit unsure, but when Ed decided to go for it, Collie then thought he'd serve the union best in the Welfare position.

I don't know any of the DCU folks these days. But why was Ed thought of as unbeatable (if indeed he was)?

Not everyone is motivated by power and going for a "BIGGER" position. My motivations for running for education are based on the role of the Education Officer solely.

I love the work I do and how I get to help students in times of stress and need.

And the whole if they get in they could go again issue...... under the old constitution sabbaticals could have done up to 6 years in the SU ( 2 years in each position). We reduced this to 2 sabbatical terms period.

    Rgds,

    Ciller

Sorry, I don't follow all of these things, as I'm no longer a student. Am I right in saying that you are the current SU Education (and Welfare) officer and that you are seeking a second sabbat term as Education officer?

    Nice try, Ruth Connolly :P

I'm not Ruth Connolly. I'm a second year humanities student. Just stating my opinion.

Does anybody have a link to a website/facebook page for Tim? He's the only one running for Welfare that I haven't seen anything from as I'm not on campus this semester and would like to have a look.

I'd like to see Ed as President, Cillian as Education Officer and Collie as Welfare.
    I have a few reasons:
    • Ed has incredible leadership skills and next year with fee's, prices on campus, quality of campus services, a new constitution and student apathy as some of the problems the College faces we need to get the campus and students motivated to help solve those problems.
    • Cillian has a wide knowledge of education matters, that is near unmatched on campus, from filling out the forms to the processes students need to go through to get help and get things done for them. He is also one of the nicest and most thoughtful guy on campus. I think in that office you need someone who knows what they're talking about but also knows how to assure students that they're going to get help.
    • Collie has the understanding of college life, the know how to help students with hardships and the strategic knowledge to enact plans that will integrate students more effectively. Collie has the network links that will also help get more resources for any campaigns that are run by the SU. Having these links makes the SU more cost effective and saves having to over spend on students money. He's also one of the bubbliest and fun people on campus, always stops for a chat and him and his office have always been open to students. I think we need this experience and good natured fun in the Welfare office so that students aren't afraid or worried about facing their problems along with the SU.
I suppose my main reason for wanting to see these people in office is because I've gotten to know them as the hard working, nice, decent and good people that they are. It's been a privilege to know them and also to see them work tirelessly for students, staying beyond their job times to make sure things get done for students.

Listening to the Education debate on DCUfm.

JJ O'Byrne is way out of his depth. Cillian and Ian are shining once again.

Oh, and quorum was reached already. Great turnout for voting.

Tina Newsome-McDonnell hasn't been mentioned here, shes running for Vice-President for Education. She is probably the nicest person you will ever meet and is a really hard worker. She's been out canvassing and her policies have gotten a great response so you can take a look at them here if you're still to vote.
    http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002247965293

    To sum up they are:
Increased resources in the library through buying second hand books from students (or alternatively a much better 2nd hand book system)
Increased Library Opening hours (until 12am during the week and open on Sundays)
Free/Subsidised basic IT classes in library (these could be given by IT students at a small rate of €2 per person or something similar)
Increased awarenes of UANEEN module by promotion in 1st and 2nd year
    Mentor/buddy system for international students
Possible opening of a science learning centre due to high failure rates in 1st year.

And yes, I am her friend and have no shame to promote her. If you see her around campus just stop and chat to her and you will realise why.

I am not a member of the SU or any clique for that matter, just a normal member of the student body who was willing to give every candidate a fair chance with their policies when they asked me to vote for them. I am a science student and I feel that we are so underrepresented.

This person seems to think that the sun shines out of both Cillian and Ian, but they have no policy on Science. Especially seeing as we´re the smart, innovative people who are going to get the economy going again! Shame on them! Having read everyones policies, I feel I am going to vote for Tina (I see her friend posted above!) because she has a policy on helping Science students with the Science building and when I met her, she seemed really friendly and genuinely interested to know about me and my experience in DCU.

I listened to DCU fm this evening and I thought she was the best, really clear about what she wanted to do. I don´t think anyone else is as interested.

I prefer Cillian and Ian because I think they're the best candidates, similar to the fact that you think Tina is the best candidate, does that mean that you think the sun shines out of her? No, it means you have an opinion different to mine. I'm a Science student as well so don't try that one on me.

Cillian and Ian want to help the students all-round whereas some others seem to have a policies (like Tina) devoted to Science. Education Officers are supposed to have a knowledge and be able to cater for everyone and Ian seems to think he can do this while Cillian has proven that he can do it. You can't have an Education Officer who tries harder for the Science students then doesn't cater for the Nursing students or the Business students.

You listen to the DCUfm debate again, you hear everyone answering the questions with a load of unrealistic policies and suggestions and then Cillian (and Ian, to an extent) slams the door shut on everyone. Why? Because he knows what realistically can and can't be done.

Science learning centre is an excellent idea in theory, but then you have to realise that the tutors don't have time to be teaching all day everyday, they're still students themselves and there is a lot more work in being a Science PhD than in most other faculties.

And I don't know how you can say Cillian and Ian aren't interested. Both have been involved in the Union since they first started so to say they aren't interested is a load of nonsense and suggests to me that you know little about them.

And I was a rep this year and I feel my class got fair representation and Alan Armstrong did a fantastic job as Science and Health Convenor. I went to him with issues that my class were having and he helped solve them to the best he (realistically) could.

Some people, I feel, expect too much from the Union because they constantly spout nonsense about a 24-hr Library or a massive hike in food prices.

That is complete and utter nonsense. First of all, Tina is a student of the Business and Humanities faculties, I gave the science learning centre example to show how she has actually been out talking to students and gotten feedback from them to help make her policies. Read through her policies and you will see that most of them are beneficial to the entire DCU community. She spent most of yesterday talking with nurses to get their perspective also. The library could easily open until midnight during the week, the automatic check-in/out system is there, its just a matter of having the security guard hang around for an extra 2 hours. 24 hours is completely unrealistic and unnecessary and is not a policy which Tina has given. She also hasn't given the goal of changing food prices as Tripod (which is directed by the head honchos of DCU) has that all sewn up. I'm a class rep myself and know that changes such as those are unachievable. But the other goals are sound, and we have given ways to realistically achieve them. Perhaps if the goals these former guys are setting haven't been achieved then we should look to a new candidate with real motivation to implement them? Saying its impossible just because it hasn't been done yet is pessimism.

Anyhow, before you criticise someone for their policies and background perhaps you should take a look at their manifesto or speak to them first. Tina has been extensively involved in Society life in particular, she is the successful head of a large DCU society at current. I've posted a link to her policies in the prior post, I suggest you read them.

Very interesting day at the counting. Collie looks to be leading the way in 1st Preferences for Welfare after cleaning up in the Business school but I reckon Jackie's or Ruth's transfers have a huge role to play because Collie isn't transferring as well as they are.

Similar story in Education, except Cillian looks to be transferring better than Collie in Welfare. Ian and Tina did well in business but there seemed to be a lot of 2's and 3's for Cillian.

Tallies are nothing, though. Still a long way to go.

Tina should take a lot of Anita's transfers, they have a lot of the same friends so hopefully that will turn into votes. It'll be interesting to see how things pan out over the day!

provisional first tally for education (first preference on a percentage of total votes):
    Cillian 35%
    Tina 21%
    Ian 20%
    JJ 16%
    Anita 7%

Yeah I noticed that alright, JJ's seemed to be split the three-ways while a LOT of Ian's were going to Cillian.

That was only from my eye, though. Not to be quoted on.

Collie Ollie got Welfare, it's looking good for Cillian Byrne but they're still going transfers, and obviously Ed Leamy is a certainty.
