a leinster u19 youth side lost 52-0 to st. michaels college

not surprising given they are a rep side who have just came together for one game against potentially the best schools side in the country who have been playing and training together for months.

still not a great scoreline to see

Some decent games. Nenagh Waterpark was excellent game real high quality but few injuries to both sides with key players possibly out for a while on both sides.
Cork Con, Waterpark, Skibbereen, Cobh, Bruff and Bandon are all unbeaten in the under 18 cup after 2 rounds and leading way for quarter final places.

2 weeks of games in Phase 2 of Munster competitions to go before knockout stage begins.

In the under 18s Cup Bandon lead group one on sixteen points with four wins from four. Next are Midleton and Bruff on three wins from four with Muskerry on eight points. Next weekend in final round is Bandon v Muskerry, Bruff v Midleton. Bandon should win to top the group with winner of other game deciding second and who automatically makes the quarter finals while the loser will either get a quarter final spot or be in a playoff.

Il discuss group three next as its easier... Waterpark are top with four wins from four. Theyve qualified but may not be top. Nenagh Ormond and Cork Con are on three wins from four. next weekend see's Cork Con host Waterpark. Nenagh travel to Cashel-Fethard and should almost certainly get the win. If Waterpark win it will be Waterpark first, Nenagh second and Con third but if Con win then there could be playoffs for the quarter finalists.

In group two. Skibbereen are top with three from three. Cobh are on three wins from four. Clan have two wins from four. Ennis have one win from three. Skibbereen host Cobh which will decide who will win the group. Ennis two games are against Skibbereen and Waterford City.

In the Under 16 Cup Skibbereen are top with four wins from four, Ennis have three wins from three games. Skibbereen travel to Ennis this weekend. Winner will top the group. Loser of game will qualify for quarter in second place. Any of Mallow, Tralee or Thurles could qualify in third for a playoff/quarter final spot.

In group 2 Cobh are top with three wins from three. Ballincollig also unbeaten in three games but have drawn a game so two points behind Cobh. Kilfeacle have played four games and lost once but two were draws which puts them in third. Cobh Kilfeacle this weekend will be big game in deciding qualifiers.

Young Munster should beat winless so far Clanwilliam in final round to top group 3. Douglas Carrigaline should beat Kinsale which should get them a playoff/quarter final spot while Abbeyfeale v Waterpark will be winner takes all for a knock out spot

It's a pretty impressive list considering where it has come from. Age profile is pretty young as well which is a good sign of things to come hopefully

    Munster Club Competitions Update

    U16 CUP GROUP 1
    1. ENNIS - confirmed.
    2. SKIBBEREEN - confirmed.
    3. TRALEE OR MALLOW who are level but play each other next week.

    U16 CUP GROUP 2
    1. COBH - confirmed.
    2. BALLINCOLLIG OR NENAGH depending on results next week.
    3. All dependent on results of 2 remaining games next week.

    U16 CUP GROUP 3.
    1. YOUNG MUNSTER - confirmed.
    2. WATERPARK - confirmed.
    3. ABBEYFEALE - confirmed.

    U18 CUP GROUP 1.
    1. BANDON - confirmed.
    2. BRUFF OR MIDLETON.
    3. BRUFF OR MIDLETON.

    U18 CUP GROUP 2.
    1. COBH - confirmed.
    2. SKIBBEREEN OR ENNIS.
    3. DEPENDS ON RESULT OF ENNIS/SKIBBEREEN. IF ENNIS WIN THEY WILL BE 2ND AND SKIBBEREEN 3RD. IF ENNIS LOSE THEN SKIBBEREEN 2ND AND ENNIS, NCW, CLANWILLIAM TIED 3RD.

    U18 CUP GROUP 3.
    1. WATERPARK - confirmed.
    2. NENAGH - confirmed.
    3. CORK CON - confirmed.

So Group 2 in both competitions still remain open with several teams still vying for qualification. Several games to be played this coming week-end , all refixed due to the bad weather in recent weeks.

At U18 in Group 2 Skibbereen will qualify regardless of the result - A Win or a draw would give them 2nd place and a loss would give them 3rd place. Ennis need to get something from the game to be certain of qualification - A win gives them 2nd , a draw guarantees 3rd place. A loss however and the 3 way tie along with NCW and Clanwilliam will probably be decided by pulling a name out of a hat as there would be no time for another play-off round.

In Group 1 at U18 , Midleton and Bruff played out a 15 All draw in Bruff , leaving them all square so they play-off again this week-end to decide the group , this time in Midleton.

Overall - All 1st place finishers get a Home QF , the three 2nd place teams go into a hat and one is drawn out for the final Home QF, the others play away . The three 3rd place finishers also go into a hat , 1st name out gets an away QF and the other two teams play-off for the remaining QF place.

Play-off games to be played on 10th/11th March and QF's to be played 17th/18th/19th March.

Semi-Finals set for w/e 24th March with the final 2 weeks later on 7th/8th April.

This year there is also a "Munster Development Cup" for the 10 teams that did not qualify from Phase 2 for the Cup. Depending on how many teams choose to enter this competition (I'd assume all would) there will be a round of playoffs on 10th/11th March with QF/SF and final on the same dates as the Cup.

It really is best structured underage competition in the country.

What are your thoughts on the competitions? Winners etc. What club again are you involved in?

Do you know what way the Plate/Bowl are structured now?

I've not been following the results in the Plate/Bowl but the format and dates are exactly the same as the Cup..

The "Development" cup is new this season for the team not qualifying for the knock-out stages from the Cup.

I'd guess most, if not all would go forward for that competition and the standard would be pretty good as if you look at the results from Phase 2 of the Cup there was not a whole lot between top and bottom in the groups , certainly at U18 there were no blow-out results at all , one or two at 16's but generally the teams were all really competitive.

Yeah real lack of blow outs is good sign. Standards really improving with this competition.
Hopefully we may see more coverage now competitions is getting to end stages

That's a super point. It shows you how much regular coaching of a high standard makes a difference. Would be very interesting if you put the same two teams against each other in three years time.

No point. This was a club side playing together for possibly first time ever against guys from one school used to playing same system.
A lot of these players will have been in leinster age grade system for 3/4 years so will have been getting very regular coaching of a high standard

Struggle to find many backs who could make the academy.
Leinster underage club game has taken a step back recently in terms of producing academy prospects IMO.

Not so sure underage club game has taken step back even if numbers making academy are as high as before.

    Any thoughts on other provinces?
