White elephant planned for Tipperary

This seems like the height of stupidity and corruption. A large casino/hotel is being planned for the Tipperary countryside. It is an unviable project, there are extremely poor transport links to it, not to mention that it is completely tacky with a greyhound track and a replica of the whitehouse included in the plans. The only reason this project has got this far is because of the corrupt FF government which needed Michael Lowry to vote for their budget to pass. And so they offered the gombeen tax evader Lowry a casino for Tipp to get his vote.

If FG/Labour allow this to go ahead there should be riots in the street.

Well Las Vegas was built in the middle of nowhere so I guess Tipperary already fits the profile.

I'd love to see it if it was done right and was financially viable. I'd definitely go once or twice a year!

Also, under current law, commercial casinos are illegal.

Well thank f1ck for that and hope it stays that way. The last thing we need here is a fooking casino. Imagine hundreds of fools sitting in a hall crouched forward at a machine going "ding! ding! ding!" slowly edging their way towards bankruptcy so we can have another bailout when these lads reach the end of the line. We have enough people addicted to gambling in this country with bookies alone no need to be worsening the situation by facilitating this kind of project

It includes not just a casino but a hotel modelled on the White House (with 500 beds), a horse racing track, a dog track, a 15,000 capacity underground concert venue and a car park that can accommodate 6,000 cars. What kind of gobshítes think building this in Tipp will work when there's little in the way of a market for it, incomes are continuing to decline, prices to rise and the exchange rate with the US dollar is unappealing at best for tourists from that quarter. I'd have my suspicions that there's something else going on in the background here. Casinos have long been used for money-laundering, and Ireland is notoriously lax when it comes to enforcing or enacting regulations (just see Parmalat or Depfa). The boyos building this need to be watched very closely.

It is a special kind of expensive elephant that would be white, they offer no advantage over a grey elephant hence the name. Money spent on one is money down the drain and in the old days the extremely wealthy would procure one for show

What's the problem. If the thing gets built and and is unsuccessful and fails, that is still €460m spent in the area and 2,000 jobs that were created building it and however many more knock on jobs. If it succeeds, it could bring in some much needed tourist revenue and tax revenue.

An underground ski run would be cool, with real snow. They have them in Finland for training during the summer. This could be a great idea or a big disaster. How do those american indian casinos in the middle of the desert do?

Nama would have to take it over pretty quickly if it was built and failed, in which case we'd be stuck with the bill.

Indeed there will be. We've had the collapse of an economy, mass unemployment, endless revelations of corruption, NAMA, higher taxes, 7 and we did feck all........ but build a fake White House in the sticks and we will surely all be on the barricades.

What makes you say that. Do you know where he is getting funding from?

Because the main financial backer is a former Garda, who also owns sites in the area bought during the boom which remain idle. They say that they're going to get funding from a 'foreign consortium' but have been extremely short on detail as to who will be providing this. I think it needs to be watched very closely.

And when you do build it you can close down the trackis in Thurles, Clonmel and probably Tipperary as well. Count in the loss in jobs and revenue from racing days in these towns when you do the calculations.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 810 ✭✭✭gonedrinking

What makes you say that. Do you know where he is getting funding from?

Do you honestly think it is going to be funded by private savings when it could just be paid for by a bank loan in which case if it fails it the burden can be passed to the taxpayer. And make no mistake, this will fail, its not even open for discussion. Our farming industry is booming at the minute yet they want to use land for this farce? And create a lot of gambling additions in the process. If you are going to invest in something at least make sure it is viable and sustainable.

The main financial backer owns a slot machine emporium n Dublin. Undoubtedly he has some means, however it's highly unlikely he has €460 million lying around and it's unclear who's giving him the loans for this.

If this thing targets the tourist Market then I'm all for it, but if it targets the local market it will be horrendous.

    Mini-Las Vegas=good
    Major Ladbrooks= bad

Casinos, like property, dont generate wealth. They merely distribute it.

Maybe I have been watching too many films, but couldn't this easily be used as a front for foreign (or even local) organised crime?

How come Thurles didnt close down Clonmel or vice versa so?

Everyones great at thrwoing negativity around. t's a private venture thats privately funded. Just like other industries, it's up to the competition to survive or die.

Or maybe we should just have monolpolies in everything?

In that article it says Denis Desmond has backed it. That doesn't necessarily mean he put his own money into it but if he wanted to he could probably fund it a couple of times over.

Not being negative, just pointing out a few things. During the boom when hotels were being built everywhere they were inevitably sold to the people as creating jobs. In actual fact they shut down a huge amount of B&B's and the promised amount of jobs rarely arose.

Thurles is close to closing down as it is, this will finish them off.

The tracks I mentioned grew at their own pace over decades, they were built in different times, this will finish them off. It's like opening a huge superpub in a small town with 6 pubs, 3, 4 or maybe 5 will inevitably go to the wall. Not necessarily a good thing.

Therein lies the problem. None of them have signified how much, if any, capital they're investing in this project, and if they have any business sense, they won't be putting their money where their mouth is. 'Dr Quirkey' doesn't seem to have the same means as Desmond and is referred to as the chief investor- that's why i'd be concerned, as to who else is investing in it, what interests they represent, and what might have induced them to invest here in the first place.

Thurles will be closing anyway as part of the plans for this, and, as I understand it, the staff will be redeployed in the new facility.

No loss either. Thurles racecourse is a kip. A few drops of rain there and racing is abandoned. Clonmel and Tipp racecourses will actually benefit from this.

The problem is that this is being funded from the proceeds of crime and is being promoted by a criminal politician. I was surprised that RTE put it so plainly last night, but Dr Quirkeys is an illegal gambling operation and all money made there is no different to a mafia bookie or numbers racket.

The fact is that Richard Quirke (a former Garda) has bribed the police and/or councillors to be allowed to stay open. If you think this man has any concept of responsible gambling or ethics then stroll through the rows of slots there any Saturday to see mothers sitting there with babies on their laps or their children beside them in buggies while the dole and children's allowance gets fed into the machines.

The jobs and tax revenue argument for building a casino has been shown time and again in the US to be completely false-the actual economic effect of a new casino in an area is the equivalent of a recession every four years. I couldn't believe the stupidity of that man in the programme from the chamber of commerce welcoming the development-most of the businesses he represents will be forced to close as a direct result of this.

As an aside here's the video of his son shown last night:

If there was any justice in this country the CAB would have seized that house years ago.

I think its a great idea but i think it will be executed poorly. It should be a major party venue but it will be an overpriced corporate venue and with the current drink licensing laws its pointless. I would like to see it get a 24 hour license and be filled with boozers, strip clubs, fast food and night clubs. Its in the middle of nowhere as well. Its perfect for it to become a major indigenous tourist venue, an alternative to money going out of the economy with lads weekends away in Britain and Europe. The venue should also be secured tightly from any sort of anti social behavior.

For gods sake...how could you have any of this without serious anti-social behaviour? There are good arguments outlined in this thread about the way this project will be financed, and doubts about its sustainability. I'd suggest you read them carefully before coming to any conclusion about this Venue.

So long as its being paid for by private sector investors I'm all for it.

I totally agree with this and at least it will provide much needed jobs during the construction and in the end, if it fails, the whitehouse hotel would make a pretty plush cowshed.

This seems like the height of stupidity and corruption. A large casino/hotel is being planned for the Tipperary countryside. It is an unviable project, there are extremely poor transport links to it, not to mention that it is completely tacky with a greyhound track and a replica of the whitehouse included in the plans.

OP, it is a private venture creating jobs. You say it's the height of stupidity but the investors here are not getting State money. Where is the corruption?

If it fails thousands of construction jobs will have been created. If it succeds, thousands of service jobs will be created, plus more in Shannon airport for sure

It will be the original White House, not what you see on RTÉ or any news channel.
Why is it tacky? It was a Kilkenny man who designed the original White House
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Hoban
The only reason this project has got this far is because of the corrupt FF government which needed Michael Lowry to vote for their budget to pass. And so they offered the gombeen tax evader Lowry a casino for Tipp to get his vote.

Ah, the gombeen talk. Pull a Gregory Deal in Dublin and you a hero, do it outside Dublin and you are a gombeen. ;)

Lowry secured a change in legislation, not a road, not a bypass or hospital. Cost nothing but staff time in the Attorney Generals office and Dáil time

If FG/Labour allow this to go ahead there should be riots in the street.

Well Tipperary North County Council already examined it. Guess what, this council like most is dominated by FG and Labour!

shannon airport will be about 40 minutes away from this project if it goes ahead, and i dont think it takes a rocket scientist to see that a link will be built to the motorway that runs not a couple of miles from this venture if it gets the go ahead. so you have the main motorway from limerick to dublin, wh#hich would mean travel time from dublin being about one hour 45minutes, about an hour and 20 minutes drive on a bus from galway, 40minutes bus transfer from an international airport and an hour and half to the countries 2nd biggest city. also limerick just up the road.

stag parties from england, scotland and wales will lap this shit up!

people always complain in this country that there is nothing to do, then go abroad to these type of ventures, let us have something absolutely ridiculous like this for once!
