Hi hope somone can help here.

Looking at a Toyota Auris at main dealer in cork.
Its 1.3 petrol with 13000 miles and cash @ 12500.

I wondering is this a good price? Or what do they go for . also mileage seems low

Given the list price in places like carzone with main dealers is it usually expected that you would get some form of money off?

why ohhh why do people always come on here looking for CRYSTAL BALL GAZING?

how are we meant to know the margin a dealer has on a particular Auris and what he'll let it out the gate for?

Of course you'll get it cheaper if you've not trade in, and paying cash.

    Go and ask!

    The year and spec?

1.33 and miles suggests its a uk model

As for discounts, there's no set amount. Some dealers price to sell, some build in big margins. Best to compare like with like, figure out realistically what you'd be happy paying and aim for that.

Also, drive as many different cars as you can for perspective.

Currently considering changing our car. We have an 06 Ford Focus petrol, with just under 88k on the clock. (Lower than usual mileage because my wife uses it just a couple of days a week while up to now, at least, I drive another car).We have had the car for six years and it hasn't given us any trouble at all, but looking to change while the car still has a reasonable value. (NCT'd till May 14, taxed till end April 14)

"Focussing" (!) on at an 11 year reg version, which from my initial survey only comes in 1.5 Diesel version. We've never had a diesel car (I know very little about cars generally).

So two questions, really...Firstly, would it be better to sell privately, then buy from a dealer on a cash basis. Secondly, does anyone have an opinion on the merits or otherwise of a 2011 Focus?
Any replies would be much appreciated.

Yes, sell private (if possible) and buy straight. However, explore what the dealer will do on a cost to change?

2011 1.6 tdci focus is the car you refer to? they don't come in 1.5 .....they come in 1.6 and 1.8 diesel, and rarely a 2.0 diesel.

see this post i put up advising a chap buying a similar car. He has since bought it.

Carzone will list 1.6 as 1.5. A glitch I pointed out to them in 2004 when all our cars had the wrong size listed...

If you list them as between 1500 and 1599cc they show up as 1.5

Is it the new or old model Focus, both were sold in 2011?

Haven't picked any particular car yet...wasn't even aware that there were two different models for that year.
Boards is my first port of call as I brace myself for the arduous task of changing cars, so looking forward to looking back when all is sorted and hopefully happy with the outcome.

The new model was launched in late 2011 but there were still a lot of old models registered in 2011, they will be very similar to your 2006 model. The new model also got a newer 1.6 TDCi engine with a six speed gearbox.

    Uk model obviously
Not the best in terms of equipment.
Later 09s got different grille lights etc and ecodynamics option (wouldn't bother with that option)
Think they also got 6 speed box around then too.
Warranty is 100,000 miles so plenty left. Needs proper service history.
    I'd aim for a 113hp 1.6d over an 89hp 1.6d

    Late 09 spec

    Earlier spec

Cheers for that. I'm just looking to trade up to a bigger car as we have 2 kids now. Looking to buy in the Waterford, Kilkenny, Wexford Carlow area budget around 12500 so I'm a little restricted.
Was looking at these 2 as well.….

The Octavia while roomy for it's class is still from the class below the likes of the Avensis, Octavia competes with the likes of the Focus, Golf, etc.

last of the old model, looks dated now, and will only look worse/more dated soon, I'd try and get something fresher.....

I'm not too pushed on the look tbh, once the car is reliable roomy and good value then I'm happy. Would be nice to have as many extras as possible though.

Motor tax on those 2009 Avensis 1.6 is over €500 a year, just something to note.

    Another alternative:

    Ouch pricey tax alright.

Just don't have the time to drive to Galway(living in Waterford) , nice car though.

Really does seem to tick all the boxes if that's what your after. Get a look, check the service history and if your happy do a motorcheck or equivalent :)

Price wise, is that a good price? Cheers, I'm fairly useless when it comes to cars!

Not bad at all in fairness, you'll always get a bit off though :)
Great test and low enough mileage.
Send a great car with good spec and not the normal boring Octavia.
    Definitely worth a view :)

Okay I'm finding this tough, I ain't great at picking out cars as you can guess...how about a Honda Jazz, are they roomy?

    Here's a 2011 for the same money

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Honda/Jazz/1.2-SE-S/38013896158623760/advert?channel=CARS

    And another
    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Honda/Jazz/1.2-SE-S/37213723491912640/advert?channel=CARS

Its slightly lower spec and 1.2 but what harm, still has AC etc.
That 2010 is dear enough IMO, and there won't be any noticeable discount built into that price either going on past attempted dealings there.

Or better still, a 2012 with tiny mileage for €12,950
    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Honda/Jazz/Honda-Ja/38813898767447490/advert?channel=CARS

    Jazz is a great car.

Not a great selection out there for us.

Find a car you like the look of within budget. Drive one locally even if its bonkers money. Figure what you want.
Then find the best one you can wherever it is. Ask all the right questions.
Many dealers will meet you halfway from home if you're serious enough about the car.
If the car is still under manufacturers warranty, it won't make any potential warranty work any more difficult.
