"A once in a lifetime trip"... The dramatics. Spain for 3 days, it's not a round the world trip.

It's good to see management serious about trying to win this game. Nobody has them taken prisoner. If they want to go they can make that decision with their parents.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,187 ✭✭✭cavan4sam

Ah nonsense nobody takes minors more serious than the lads on it ...

If management have a problem with a school trip I'm sure this should have been flagged long before now ?

When did all this take place

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 hatefulrory

Of course they are taking it seriously but it's up to management to guide them. If they feel this would impact preparation then why not let that be known?

We are hearing the story third hand from someone who already has been slating the minor management and players on here since their first league outing. I certainly wouldn't take this story as gospel.

They are going in against a Tyrone team that hammered them a few weeks ago in the league, it's a good opportunity to see how much they have improved.

Tyrone again. Away to Mayo (most likely) again to start, and Ulster winners making it 3 Ulster teams. Honestly I'm sick of these terrible draws we get. Monaghan swanning around with a far easier group again

That draw is as poxy as could have been. Down got the jammy draw.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,317 ✭✭✭baconsarnie

Yeah that's how I feel now. At least the Tyrone game is likely to be in Brewster…that's about the only positive I can get out of that.

Mayo in Castlebar again. Great. Couldn't be as bad as we were the last time….could we???

edit: this was meant to be a response to Cavan4Sam's comment.

Jeez Monaghan got the quare draw.

    Mayo/Galway Away

    Armagh/Donegal Home

    Tyrone Neutral

The kids have been asking whens the next Cavan game i think i will be telling them there is no more this year..

We also surely can't be as bad again though. We gave Morgan et al way too much respect (he was on a yellow, and we never once went on top of him to see what he was about), and Tyrone dominated kickouts. Was then a weird felling having Armagh dominate Tyrone on kickouts. We look very very far back on kickout strategy, unless we change it drastically, or change keeper. Kickout is now the most important feature in the new rules nearly. Surely if James Smith is back we can be better and keep them more honest too?

How often did you go on a trip abroad with your school friends?

Management could have just moved training to Monday morning before they went. You have to work with people. Not against them.

As for hearing it “third hand”, go and speak to someone with a son in the school and they’ll confirm it. I’ve heard it off several people.

I also don’t believe I’ve “slated” the minor management. I’ve stated they are inexperienced and we should be aiming for better. This present situation reinforces that theory for me.

I certainly didn’t “slate” the minor players. After that draw today and the U20s, they’re the last county team we can have an interest in.

Who do we have home ,away and neutral

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,317 ✭✭✭baconsarnie

Donegal home, Mayo away and Tyrone in probably Clones or Brewester. So says mystic meg/ baconsarnie*

Would prefer Galway away for a new away trip

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,428 ✭✭✭tanko

    R1 away to Connacht RU

    R2 home to Ulster champions

    R3 neutral venue v Tyrone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,317 ✭✭✭baconsarnie

That's also true. We have an atrocious record against Tyrone but it's especially poor in Omagh. Hopefully we have players back for the All Ireland series. You mentioned James Smith, huge loss as was Gearoid coming off at half time. We were missing our entire full forward line as well. Would hope that Oisin Brady and Cormac Reilly at least would be back, i think Cavan_King said no chance Paddy Lynch is back for county this year.

That was supposed to be a quote response to @tazman06 and your comment that we surely couldn't be as toothless as were were against Tyrone but my computer is acting the pup. Maybe it saw the draw and has thrown in the towel too!!

I didn’t mention Paddy Lynch and a potential return date or lack there of. I know as much as you do on that front.

With that list of games, no point rushing him back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 227 ✭✭tazman06

Lynch took a full part in warm up before and was warming up all during the match vs Tyrone. he was always set to be back for the AI series and I've not heard anything that he's had a further setback

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,348 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

Leave him be to recover in the club championship for county league next year.

Latest WAC pod said Lynch got minutes in a friendly against Offaly.

The lord giveth and the lord taketh away- they said James Smith and Gearoid likely out for the All Ireland series.

We have zero luck with the draw and now down two absolutely crucial players.

These types of constant injuries in the Cavan panel though are not bad luck, it points to something fundamental about how we prepare teams. Its the same every year. The draw couldnt have been much worse though, and that is bad luck. But to be honest the display we put in against Tyrone wouldnt beat anyone in the All Ireland series so maybe it makes no difference.

Every club and county team seem to be suffering greatly with injuries. There are too many games and too much training now. These are amateur athletes. Bodies just can’t take it.

Horrible draw but we were all saying promotion was key a few weeks ago....

Personally I think with new rules we need to look at the panel in general. I think Meath have got it right.

Before this year you needed a fullback line who could also attack, keep possession and maybe take a shot. With the new rules you need defenders who can defend, tackle more than anything.

Old rules meant forwards who could track back, tackle and play safe, this year speed, beating a man and scoring is needed more than ever.

In Centre field before the new rules mobility was key. Now it's about fielding high balls and knowing were the breaking ball was.

i wouldn't say the game has changed but reverted back to how it was pre blankets, pre basket ball like keeping posession.

I hope there are county selectors at plenty of club league games as there will be plenty of lads 27, 28 year olds who may have missed county call ups but the new game suits.

As for the All Ireland groups, probably looking at Armagh, Galway and Tyrone. Galway without Cormer and Walsh will struggle to get past Mayo and Armagh look like the best chance an Ulster team have had to go back to back in the All Irelands in a very long time.

Could be looking at 3 hammerings.

The club championship is vital though, we need to find players that suit the new rules.

I think we are ok up top though. Mc Evoy, Lynch, Lovett, Madden, Mc Veety,, Matthew Smith all are seriously talented forwards and i am sure im missing a few.

We struggle in defence and breaking at Speed. Beenie, Fortune and Carolan are fantastic runners with the ball but also the best man markers.

So we need about 7 or 8 starters to filter through in the next couple of years but with the new rules we need to look outside the current underage set up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,731 ✭✭✭celt262

We certainly need a few midfielders and I'm not sure if we have them. Any that have been brought in haven't looked like they are county standard. Mckiernan likely will finish up this year and Smith who I rate as our best midfielder picks up alot of injuries. Need Tommy Galligan badly but whether he has the engine for the faster game is another thing.

The minors lost 19-13 against Tyrone earlier. They will now play Down next Saturday morning in Breffni at 12. The winners of that play either Donegal or Tyrone.

Another loss to Tyrone but unfirtunately I’m told this group, particularly the Pats lads, have regularly played a dominant Tyrone school in Ulster football - I think possibly Omagh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,348 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

We need midfielders yet you’ve a lad over in Castlerahan, who is still club minor but excelling in senior Division One games, and who comes from good stock, that isn’t getting any attention from our development chiefs this year. Says it all really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,215 ✭✭✭piplip87

Lads just a reminder. Martin Tynan may not be that popular but the man raised over 40k for Pieta house on the premise thet would open up a counselling service on East Cavan after a raft of suicides in the Virginia area.

Pieta then took the funds and did **** all.

Walk for SOSAD in Virginia 4am next SATURDAY MORNING. They have opened a service in Mullagh free of charge so funds are vital.

Mayo in 2 weeks in Castlebar. Expectations?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 112 ✭✭macdonagh2007

Looking like another long evening or afternoon in McHale Park Castlebar without our 2 midfielders. Ruane,O'Connor and O'Shea will have a field day on all kickouts. At the same time Mayo can be beaten / got at but it will require huge performances from our senior experience players. Mayo supporters have written Cavan off . They need reminding that we have 5 All Ireland wins to their 3 !!!
