They looked a bit confused at the end as I'm assuming when they were attacking they like me thought the game would end when the ball went out of play ?

There was definitely sloppy play but Monaghan were defending with huge intensity and there was very little space or time on the ball. I was happy with how the lads performed under pressure at the end.

There was some amateurish stuff from Cavan, opting to bring the ball back out for a 2 pointer early in the game and management behaviour resulting in a 13 metre for Monaghan.

I only listened to the game on the radio but it did sound like Cavan struggled to penetrate inside the arch and then Monaghan counter attacked very quickly whenever play broke down or they turned the ball over. Dylan Edwards was mentioned every time Cavan done something good in the game.

Could of been very costly for Larry getting booked for mouthing off given Monaghan were two ahead at the time and brought the ball out for their goalie to try for 2 but thankfully it was wide. Good result all the same given Monaghan got to an all Ireland minor final with this group of players, have Armagh at home next week who Derry hammered last night so hopefully can get a win on the board before the last game against Derry which I'd imagine will be a tough one to win

Cavan were a point up with 2 mins to go. Won the resulting Monaghan kick out and turned the ball over immediately, managed to concede 2 points and just about scrapped a draw in the end. I would be raging if I was a player or manager with that performance at the end.

Watching on the live stream, the Cavan players did not look as well conditioned as Monaghan and as a result seemed to avoid contact at all costs in the attacking third. Thats were the slow lateral play came from. Maybe this is what you lads were talking about regarding lack of investment in the development squads?

I don't think we were 2 up? We were 2 points down in the 50th minute and from there to the end we scored 3 points to Monaghan's one. Yes we were lucky with that Monaghan free but the referee blew the final whistle with Cavan on the attack approaching the arc.

I completely agree Monaghan looked stronger and better conditioned. It looked for all the world that this physical advantage would tell as the game went on but Cavan didn't let it. The forwards problem solved in the second half and outscored Monaghan by 5 points while under the cosh physically.

Didnt say we were 2 up. Said we were 1 up with 2 minutes left. Anyway, it looks like 2nd place will be about winning against Armagh and keeping the score down against Derry!

Did some teams not miss out on conditioning because Andre wasn’t replaced? Also, the lulls between management of squads leaving and being replaced has been long.

Seanie Smith left the minors pretty much immediately last year in June/July when they finished up and his replacement wasn’t announced until around November I think it was.

I firmly think it’s the clubs doing the work with these lads and not any county development. Sure the squads at 15 and 16 only meet once a week. Other counties, for example, do extra sessions over school holidays like Easter & Halloween but I haven’t seen that in Cavan in a long time.

Minors play a very strong Tyrone team today it'll be interesting to see where they are after today

It’s a good starting 15 but I’d question the depth of the squad. Looks like they might have a few injuries from what I’d expect to make the 24.

The county board aren’t expecting their playing peers to support them anyway. Full round of U16 League fixtures at 1 today and minors throw in at 12.

Just in from the first league game of the year.

Ramor looked very good at times, two late Castlerahan goals took the shine of the score line. Still no shortage of young fellas coming through and missing a good few regulars.

Castlerahan looked very poor. Lacked the intensity you would expect but the gulf of class between the two sides is probably the reason of that.

Are the county lads like McEvoy or O’Connell playing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,215 ✭✭✭piplip87

None of the county lads apart from Liam Brady played, McEvoy was beside me in the stands.

No game for two weeks and he missed years of training & games. That man particularly should be playing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,215 ✭✭✭piplip87

100% agreed. Two games against the Gales and Castlerahan before Tyrone would have been ideal prep.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,351 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

To be honest, unless lads were tired, I think they should have been let play with clubs this weekend. In terms of injury, sure they could do that in a training session - case in point Paddy Lynch.

Perhaps it’s time we started looking at changing things up a bit. It’s not like we’ve been overly successful for the past few decades doing what we’ve always continued to do.

Competitive games keep lads on their toes.

Savage win by the U20s last night. Type of game we usually don't win. Behind for most of it, got the goals later on to come from behind and stay ahead to win. Derry next week which will be very tough seeing what they did to Armagh and Monaghan. 2nd in the table and a good draw for the quarters is still on though with a close game next week

Who played well for Cavan? Is there highlights available anywhere?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 465 ✭✭mylestheslasher

Seems it wasnt covered by UlsterTV for some reason. Good win alright. I watched the stream of Monaghan and Derry. Derry just swatted them aside. They look a different level. But at least an U20 team has a win under its belt for a change.

    League update

A major problem woth the new rules will be referees jesus ref for Ramor and the Gales was terrible this evening. Couldn't keep up with play. Ramor goong well considering Matthew Smith, McCrystal and McEvoy worth 4 or 5 points each.

Enda Maguire showing the form which got him on county panel before injuries, Liam Brady not involved which is crazy.

Jack Brady with massive 2 pointers.

Although fair **** to the Gaels, had a few non Irish born families beside me giving it their all, few lads playing not of Irish heritage but lovely footballerals. Integration will benefit clubs in the long run. Fair play and I am serious about this.

I feel sorry for the referees. There’s simply too many rules to implement. Impossible for a referee to try and watch everything.

It’s been a very windy weekend and it makes a huge difference for the two pointers. If you ask me, they need to revisit those.

I was at a game where the two teams twitter handles and referees halftime score were all different.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 228 ✭✭tazman06

Teams having major issues with the apps/programs they use to track scores. They otherwise have to enter it all manually. Basically the 2 pointer has messed things up and it's a hard workaround (until an update) so think we'll unfortunately see issues as we go on here

Problem was referee raising one hand for two pointers but showing two fingers so maybe was hard to spot as opposed to two hands.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 228 ✭✭tazman06

Definitely likes of that an issue too. All of it adds in to the confusion

No scoreboard. Referee's score is all that matters anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,351 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

Was that the Castlerahan game? How come Jamie Clarke isn’t with the county U20s? A man told me it’s a long time since he seen a lad of 18 have that big an effect on a Div 1 game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 539 ✭✭✭Thunderbirds

Yeah was Castlerahan game. Not sure why Jamie wouldn't even be in training developing with u20s. Seems uncoordinated.

Are there any of last year's minors on the U20 panel at all?

Team is out, about what we'd expect. Still no Lynch, I had heard this might come too soon for him, but had hoped he'd make it
