What's the story with racing and saddlebags?

I see some have them, some don't.

Are people leaving them behind to save weight or going for euro cool and keeping tube/lever/pump and keys in their pocket?

    Personal preference.

racing = no saddle bag, nothing in pockets bar gels

training = saddle bag with all the usual stuff mentioned above plus this

I would have thought that if you get a mechanical during a race you may as well just call for the broomwagon, so no point in a saddlebag?

I race Tubs so no need for saddle bag or anything there should be service in race any way well most races.

i carry everything in my pockets...
    1. 2 spare tubes.
    2. small piece of an old tyre just in case i get a blow out.
    3. 5 small cable ties.
    4. power link for the chain.
    5. pump.
    6. tyre levers.
    7. allen keys.
    8. 5 euro.
    9. food, gels, banana etc...
    10. sometimes i bring a leatherman multitool.

I would advise you to get a saddle bag.

If you crash and land awkwardly, all of these can do serious damage to you back/spine.

when I started commuting I had 2 spare tubes and 3 tyre levers, mini pump is on bottlecage.

Got my first puncture on monday, don't know how I avoided them so long, keeping the pressures up good and high helps I guess!

Anyway after fitting my first tube, I only used one lever, so I'm thinking just carry one from now on.
Although I'm changing tyres from 25's to 23's shortly and they might be harder to get on, so I may bring 2?

I'm also now paranoid about punctures so thinking about carrying 3 spare tubes!

Mini pump (Blackburn Airstik 2) just about done the job, so thinking about getting a co2 pump aswell, which will also reside in the saddlebag.

Are multitools really needed, what do people use them for?

I did yesterday, after cycling 5 days on my new tyres and about 300+ km, the tyre became unseated and pinched the tube, didn't burst though. Let it down a bit and tried to re seat it and get the tube in properly. Then I got annoyed and tried forcing it. Quickly realised why you should always have a tube :(

Big thanks to the guys in the Cycle Inn in Tallaght. They were closed but they let me in and said they'd change it as it would be quicker (dunno about that :D) all sorted and back on the road 3 minutes later all for 8 euro.

I had my new Boards jersey pocket speared by my keys in a crash last summer. That's probably worse...

Only time I need one is when I'm carrying a spare tub.
What's the story with spare tubs? Is it a matter of sitting by the roadside waiting for glue to dry or will it hold on well enough to limp home?

    My bag contains:
    • Tube
    • CO2 (x2)
    • Patches and glue
    • Speed lever
    • Multitool
    • First aid kit
    • Gilet

Cable ties are renowned the world over for fixing 99.9% of all mechanical and other problems while on a bike (temporarily). They can hold together BBs, hold on Mudguards, lights, i've even seen frames being held together by them.

Theoretically you could even fix a puncture with cable ties. One each side of the hole, zipped up nice and tight, inflate to a moderate pressure...roll home.

They have been known to sort out a few 'other problems' when used alongside:

    Insulating tape
    Refuse sack
    Hammer
    Change of clothes

Yes. Well, not too small a one, it'll take two kids, or three crates of beer.

Where did you get the trailer? Is it good quality, tempted to make one for my old beater bike

Thanks - I've never heard a puncture repair kit called a Flickset before.

Míle buíochais - tuigim anois. Níor chuala mé an tearma ariamh.

Cád é an scéal le do gaeilge?

Tá bron orm mar ní raibh mé abaltá ag scriobh nó caint as gaeilge ceart aná maith.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,200 ✭✭✭manwithaplan

Tá cruth laidir ar do chuid gaeilge, a Chram. Seans go raibh sí fágtha sa bhothán le fada an lá. Beagán degreaser agus braon ola agus bheadh sí reidh don bhóthar. Coinnigh ort.

The Irish just stemmed from my saying 'cad é sin' to rp's mention of a 'flickset'. rp, fair play to him, told me it was a "trealamh bonn briste" - lietrally a "broken tyre kit" but a damn good effort and I knew exactly what he meant (I would have struggled to put Irish on it - focal.ie gives "fearas deisithe poill" but I would say a native speaker would look at you sideways if you said that to him). I just thanked him and said I hadn't heard the term "flickset" before.

I suspect I'm breaking the euro rules in some way.

Tuigím alán focal ach ní raibh me abaltá ag caint ceart go leor. Fánann mo ceann cúpla noimead nuair a chuala me Gaeilge agus tá mé ag iarraidh le daoine a labhairt.

Go raibh maith agat le mo teanga bhaile i mo cluas aris tar cupla bhliain

(and I mean language before anyone gets smart)
