No.1 is Chain Breaker and no.2 are called tyre levers.
Have you got a pump or Co2 capsules to pump those tubes up?

    1. Multi-tool
    2. Tube
    3. Pump
    4. Repair patches & Glue
    5. Tyre levers
    6. Phone
    7. Money
    8. Condoms

you have to have at least a 12 pack, you use them on your fingers and thumbs whilst using the chaintool, helps keep your fingers nice and clean :D;)

No bag but jersey pockets contain:

    Banana
    Three fig rolls
    Tyre levers
    Multitool
    2 Spare Tubes
    Mobile phone
    House keys
    Emergency money

Mini pump is clipped to my bottle cage - I'll get me coat.

You should get a saddle bag. If you fall on your back you could quite easily stab yourself with the tyers lever or keys. Your mobile could also be ruined. Could save yourself alot of discomfort and money for all of 10 euro.

I've yet to hear of anyone being speared by their house keys.

    No saddle bag.

Jacket pockets have 2 tubes, multi-tool, pump, levers, wallet and phone. House key goes in wallet.

For longer rides I have a 'bonk' bag to go on the top tube in which I keep a spot of afternoon tea (energy bars and wine gums) - and a 'hip flask' for a few gels get added the pockets.

I use a very small saddle bag. Currently it contains 2 tubes, €10 and a front door key. Don't be lugging the extra weight of additional keys/key rings around.

My pockets? food, phone and speed lever.

I've only got a small saddlebag.

    2 spare tubes
    Speedlever
    Multitool
    Minipump
    Chainbreaker

I can never figure out how people manage to stuff so much stuff into their jersey pockets. Plus I'm paranoid that it'll all fall out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,615 ✭✭✭Hail 2 Da Thief

I've a mini bag which I can just about squeeze a spare tube, multitool, tyre levers & strip of tyre into. Anything else goes in my jersey pocket.

What's the story with racing and saddlebags?

I see some have them, some don't.

Are people leaving them behind to save weight or going for euro cool and keeping tube/lever/pump and keys in their pocket?

racing = no saddle bag, nothing in pockets bar gels

training = saddle bag with all the usual stuff mentioned above plus this

I would have thought that if you get a mechanical during a race you may as well just call for the broomwagon, so no point in a saddlebag?

I race Tubs so no need for saddle bag or anything there should be service in race any way well most races.

I would advise you to get a saddle bag.

If you crash and land awkwardly, all of these can do serious damage to you back/spine.

    2 x tubes
    levers
    chain breaker
    power link
    multi tool
section of inner tube in case of blow out

    Pump/phone/keys and food in pockets.

when I started commuting I had 2 spare tubes and 3 tyre levers, mini pump is on bottlecage.

Got my first puncture on monday, don't know how I avoided them so long, keeping the pressures up good and high helps I guess!

Anyway after fitting my first tube, I only used one lever, so I'm thinking just carry one from now on.
Although I'm changing tyres from 25's to 23's shortly and they might be harder to get on, so I may bring 2?

I'm also now paranoid about punctures so thinking about carrying 3 spare tubes!

Mini pump (Blackburn Airstik 2) just about done the job, so thinking about getting a co2 pump aswell, which will also reside in the saddlebag.

Are multitools really needed, what do people use them for?

I did yesterday, after cycling 5 days on my new tyres and about 300+ km, the tyre became unseated and pinched the tube, didn't burst though. Let it down a bit and tried to re seat it and get the tube in properly. Then I got annoyed and tried forcing it. Quickly realised why you should always have a tube :(

Big thanks to the guys in the Cycle Inn in Tallaght. They were closed but they let me in and said they'd change it as it would be quicker (dunno about that :D) all sorted and back on the road 3 minutes later all for 8 euro.

What's the story with spare tubs? Is it a matter of sitting by the roadside waiting for glue to dry or will it hold on well enough to limp home?

    My bag contains:
    • Tube

    • Speed lever
    • Multitool

    • Gilet

Cable ties are renowned the world over for fixing 99.9% of all mechanical and other problems while on a bike (temporarily). They can hold together BBs, hold on Mudguards, lights, i've even seen frames being held together by them.

Theoretically you could even fix a puncture with cable ties. One each side of the hole, zipped up nice and tight, inflate to a moderate pressure...roll home.
