Just back from the vets with Benson. Thought he had a blood blister in his ear but it's actually a small growth:eek: Hopefully it's benign, vet thinks it's most likely a histeocytoma but worst case scenario it could be a basal cell tumour, which can be malignant .
Test results should be back by the weekend. Which can't come fast enough now.

Hope the results come back that it is benign.

Thanks guys. I know vets always inform about the worst possible outcome, just in case. It's awful to hear though. At least worst case he would only have to lose a bit of his ear flap. It's not on a vital part of him.

It came up so quickly, I'm always at the poor boys ears, trying to clean them or getting knots out, it's only there less than a week for sure.

Ahh, I hope it all works out well. I've had Felix at the vet about his ear every week for the past 3 now and we're back again tomorrow to check it again. He had a huge polyp when he came to us 6 years ago and the vet will never be able to get the root of it. He's had antibiotics for the past 3 weeks and until the last couple of days he's been clawing at his ear:(

Good look with the results - at least you'll get the results back this week! Waiting is the worst.

Good luck Benson, let us know how he gets on.

Indeed, I think the idea is lost on some that posters are free to adopt a casual/colloquial use of language on forums such as this, especially on the light-hearted threads.

Anyway, hope everything goes well with Benson Borderlinemeath. Fingers crossed.

I got Dudes first show report today, couldn't be prouder of my little man :)

We're getting very worried about Toby, he's been missing since 6am now. I've just been all around the estate and neighbouring estates calling him and there's no sign of him:(

Oh no, Pumpkinseeds I really hope he turns up soon :(:(

    Come home Toby!

A while back my vet saw a Jack Russell with terribly itchy skin. She said the pattern was strongly associated with atopy. She took a blood sample and sent it to a lab in the Netherlands to detect the allergens responsible and to have a vaccine created for the dog. Turns out the dog is sensitive to flour mites and grain mites, which can contaminate commercial dog food. The dog is on a course of tapered vaccines, is coming off prednisolone and is doing really well! I thought this was super cool when a lot of vets won't go beyond prescribing pred or atopica.

I was reading about this just this week and have been nagging my dad about closing the dogs' bags of food after he takes food out for their meals! The vet has told the owner to only buy small bags of food, keep them tightly closed and not to reuse bags. The dog is on an ultra hypoallergenic food (a Royal Canin one I think.) My vet was saying really it'd be better to be on a raw or home-prepared diet altogether, but it's beyond this owner to do that.

Cool though that she got a diagnosis and that the treatment's working so well for her dog! :)

Yes come home Toby - your mammy is worried about you!

Wow that's great the vet thought outside of the box - so many stick to their textbooks and won't go beyond them. I had that problem with Bailey and his thyroid tests - I kind of knew for years he might have a problem and always intended on asking for testing if he had to get bloods. While I was waiting for the results (and supposed to be studying - OOops!) I read up on golden retriever specific levels etc which all said he did need to be treated.. When the vet said he didn't I sent off a brief history, some photos of his coat and a scan of the test results from my vets to this lab in America - the vet running it just so happens to be the world authority on thyroid testing (yet substitute vet and the European diplomat in UCD apparently never heard of her) and the fee for her report goes back into her blood bank and greyhound rescue so well worth €63! I can see a difference in him after 4 weeks so glad I stuck to my guns - even if I did piss them off in the vets lol!
When he gets his 6 week bloods I plan on asking them if there's a cheaper option to just get the tests done and not have the lab give their opinion/interpretation as I'll be sending the values back to my cool lab in America lol! :p

    Hey boomerang,
Yay, another vet wise to the effect mites in dry food have on atopic dogs! I could write a feckin book on the condition at this stage ;-)
Would the owner be averse to ye Olde Naturediet? I've found it to be great for atopic dogs with storage mite allergy, in combination with an owner who wants an easy life.
In my experience, keeping a dog with this particular allergy on dry food, even well-managed dry food, is not good. Those little buggers are in there, no matter what you do!

That's why I got all excited when I read about it this week and then heard this update today - knew you'd mentioned it here on boards recently!

I'll say it to my vet about the Naturediet. Shur I'll give her one of Josie's for the owner to try. The stinky, fishy one I hate opening, maybe :D

My vet is a legend DBB, a true one in a million. Couldn't begin to tell you how special she is. :)

You are also a legend, for tipping me off to chicken not suiting Josie. ;):D

Aww, thanks missus! I'm morto now!
Jeez, don't give her the fishy one as a sample... You're trying to draw her to the idea, not send her running away! It really smells ick!
Actually, zooplus often do special offers on these high-quality wet foods... They've a good offer on both Rocco and, better still Lukullus at the min, both of which I have availed of and they're winging their way here as we speak! So, if the owner was up for interweb shopping, there's some decent deals to be had.
It's great to find a vet who thinks outside the box a bit, rather than just chucking preds or Atopica at itchy skin. If I ever need a skin specialist down your way, I'll be looking for her contact details!

I think they're all a bit stinky lol! I have Lucy on the puppy one as well as duck necks/gRAW/meat. She was nice and chunky last week then she went a grew overnight and looks skinny again lol so I've increased it to 3 trays a day (or 2 and one gRAW meal) plus deck necks/whatever meat is on the menu for them!

Btw vetuk is the cheapest for it out if the usual sites I use ;)

Oooh! I had been going to say above that I knew that someone here had found a site that does best value on Naturediet, but I couldn't remember who it was or what site it was! Must go have a goosey ;-)

I discovered that cheapest of all is Amazon.co.uk, if you take the subscribe and save option it's at least 5% off and free delivery. You can opt to have it delivered every month/two months/three months etc. and you can cancel the subscription at a touch of a button. I do really like VetUK though. That's where I've been getting the Forthglade, which is pretty much the same as Naturediet and they do one with a lot of tripe in it. :)

Isn't Lukullus really like the "Real Nature" line in Maxi Zoo? The Real Nature is equivalent in quality to Naturediet I think. I am so lazy about cleaning out tin cans though! I feed too many ferals tinned food already! :D

PS I reckon Naturediet should rebrand their Ocean Fish line to "Rotting Fish" :D

    Oh a lovely puppy! :)
She has her 6 month checkup in a few weeks so I want her looking perfect - especially since a nurse at the vets told me she basically wouldn't grow properly unless I fed her hills!

Toby came home safe and sound last night. He seemed a bit shaken up and was really hungry and out of sorts. He spent the night cuddled up on our bed with us. With indoor/outdoor cats you accept that there is always a risk when they go out, you just hope that nothing bad will happen and cross your fingers that nothing bad does happen to them. I've never been so relieved as I was to find him tucking into the Applaws kibble last night. I'd been wandering around alleys with a torch calling him.

Totally, I just had a bad feeling all day yesterday. There couldn't really be a worse time of the year for any animal to go missing. We had posters ready to be printed this morning if he hadn't come home. He's snuggled on a fleece blanket on the sofa now, not showing much interest in going anywhere thankfully.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,003 ✭✭✭SillyMangoX

Brilliant that he came home, would dread to think about a pet going missing this time of year. Hope everyone's pets are safe, warm, and not stressed tonight!!

Would he have been frightened and disorientated with fireworks perhaps? Might be worth keeping him in for today/tonight at least until all the idiots are finished playing with fire.

Oh I forgot subscribe & save gave free delivery!! It was £3 cheaper a box on vetuk so I got 3 boxes and collected from parcel motel. Next time I'll switch to the adult one so Bailey can have some too lol. She LOVES it - I mash it down into a go-slow/anti gulp bowl and it takes her ages to eat it. Although I made it too hard a the other week lol :p :

The Defurrum finally did the trick for Poppy yesterday. She brought up a furball that at first sight looked like a dead mouse, she kindly left it on the bottom stair for us:rolleyes:

Creams favourite day of the year has arrived, he gets to eat all the insides of the pumpkins I carve! The other 2 cats are pretty freaked out by how savage creamy goes when he gets a whiff of the orange stuff. He's like a demented cat!!
