New Format Open .22LR shoot at ECSC on 6th March

The East Coast Shooting Club is holding a new format competition shoot for .22lr rifles on Sunday 6th March. This shoot will have a similar format to the one held on the 19th February at the MNSCI except that it is open to all licensed and insured .22LR rifle owners.

The idea is to have a fun shoot and some enjoyably friendly-competition! The course-of-fire and targets etc have been designed to test shooters skills at various distances and in various shooting positions using .22lr 'sporter' or varmint type rifles.

The general format of the competition will be targets at, 50 and 100m, with targets shot in the prone, kneeling/sitting, and standing positions. So plenty of fun and variety there for all!

    Sunday 6th March 2011
    • Registration: 10:30am
    • First Detail: 11am
    • Location East Coast Shooting Club Range at Diamond Hill, Roundwood, County Wicklow.
For more details, including the rules of the competition, location, etc., please visit the club web site at

I would like to thank D'Corbus and Clivej for getting this ball rolling. They distilled a latent demand into an interesting format which the ECSC has copied . Any feedback from the shoot on the 19th Feb will be evaluated and used to improve the planning for the shoot on the 6th March. We look forward to welcoming all club shooters and any hunters and field shooters who have not shot on a club range before but who would like to see how it works, perhaps improve their skills and meet other like minded sports people.

And not forgetting BunnyShooter who was in with this mad idea from the start.

We have one final idea for a fun round which we hope to shoot off at the very end of the comp.

Not telling you anything of it but it will show who can and whom can't

There is a reasonable amount of cross over between those who hunt and those who shoot targets on ranges. I suspect that many target shooters would like to find out how they might perform in the field. I also suspect that there are many hunters who would like to know how they would perform in a competition on a range. I can not help with the first question, but I can help answer the second. The East Coast Shooting Club, based in Roundwood, Co. Wicklow, is holding a field/hunter type competition for all types of .22LR rifles on their range on the 6th March. 4 types of targets will be used, 3 positions will be used and two distances will be used, 50 and 100 metres. 35 of the 50 shots will be prone, off a bipod(Harris or similar, much loved by field shooters).
Full details of location and rules can be found on the ECSC web site, here(http://www.eastcoastshootingclub.com/)
All licensed and insured hunters are welcome.

Just looking at the map PIN, I can't see any roads. Where is the best place to head for Roundwood or Tomdarragh and is the club sign-posted?

If you head for Roundwood, that's the nearest place that should be on signposts. Take the R764 south-east out of Roundwood (I think it's signposted for Ashford, but I can't remember). Take the first left (still the R764) and follow that road until you come across some houses to your left. The gateway you want is on the right shortly after.

Last time I was at the range it wasn't signposted, so take it slowly. As best as I can measure it on Google Earth, the gateway is at: 53° 3'9.34"N 6°12'13.95"W. Go down the driveway, turn right and follow the track around until you see the cars and/or range.

Well, it now looks like I will actually make this shoot (thought I had another shoot on in Rathdrum that day, but from what I can now tell the Rathdrum shoot will be on the 13th March - so I'm free to head on up to East Coast now!)

    See you all there!

(BTW IRLConor, IWM, lads, if you need a lift down PM or text me!)

    Sorry .............................

Mmmmm. Pity Midlands had to pick that date, particularly since they precipitated the ECSC shoot by making their earlier .22 shoot closed and since it was only publicised well after ECSC had announced their shoot.

Anyway, it's a free(-ish) country and all who can make it to ECSC will be welcome, be they MNSCI members or otherwise.

Remember, it's this Sunday, 6th March.

Hasn't the Midlands shoot been advertised for ages

Someone posted this years schedule weeks ago and this would have been on it. Ah here it is, advertised since January anyway.

Oh stop stirring. How many times have we seen conflicting shoots, even under the one association's roof? People go to whatever shoot they prefer to go to, or go to all of them. If in six months time, this format is still going, brilliant, and let's do all this "we run this - no, we run this" crap then.

Not sure yet whether I'll make this ECSC shoot on Sunday. Decisions, decisions......

It's nice to have an excess of competitions on the same day to choose from. Now, where did I leave my helicopter.......

No, let's not have any of that "crap" then, please. Thanks.
As one of the "originators" and fathers of "this format" that's the last thing I'd want to see happen. But only time will tell how one's baby will fare once out in the big bad world.

I'll try to make it along on Sunday, but if I don't, best of luck with the shoot, have fun, and keep us all posted on how it goes. Thanks. dC

I apologise to Midlands; it isn't their shoot, it's NRAI. Clearly we should have checked the NRAI calendar before picking our date.

Helicopter anyone? Or some training in bi-location?

Although, Midlands to ECSC in the one day for two competitions has been done (that I can vouch for!) - although it's no picnic!!:D

Ah there's no hassle Sandy it's just there is so much BS going on lately that I thought you were having a go at the MNSCI, accusing them of trying to steal competitors. I thought that was a bit off when I remember seeing the NRAI schedule thing weeks ago.

Clearly I was over sensitive there, sorry bout that.

The shoot IS an MNSCI shoot as indicated on the NRAI calendar. If it is NRAI it will have NRAI beside the event and if it has both organisations name beside it, then it is a jointly run event.

If you read down through the calendar you will see that DFST, DURC, and Intershoot are also listed as they are running competitions, concurrently, with MNSCI and NRAi events on the same day.

Yeah, I'm not that cynical. (Except for the bit about the country not being as free as our E&B (erstwhile or otherwise) would like to portray!)

The shoot on the NRAI calendar was low key, and from the description and where it was would have been assumed to be centrefire. Therefore when it was suddenly publicised apparently at the last minute you may imagine we were a bit surprised, as indeed were some of Midland's own members.

We would have been delighted to host Midlands shooters at our event, and to the extent that that won't now happen, we are naturally disappointed. But, as Bunny has said elsewhere, maybe another day?

It isn't my policy always to agree with Sparks, but in this case he's right that it is part of the spirit of these shoots that they aren't "NGB-able". For anyone to assert exclusive jurisdiction or intellectual rights over them is not helpful, and ECSC is not doing so.

Yes, see what you mean. I looked at it quickly, saw the NRAI branding & a list of shoots and drew the obvious, but erroneous, conclusion.

I think some of the other clubs and NGB's have calendars like this; am I correct in thinking this is a list of shoots the NRAI thinks would be of interest to its members and users of its website?

On a semi-related matter, is there a MNSCI calendar? I thought I saw a notice of a Smallbore T/R shoot there for May 22nd, but now I can't find it.

I think that NRAI calendar has your Open down for the following weekend, presumably in Blueball. Could it have been moved?

But I'm getting myself off topic here. This is supposed to be for the ECSC Sporting Shoot. Don't forget folks, this Sunday March 6th ECSC Range, Roundwood starting 10.30am.

I think you might be right actually. I seem to recall having it changed from the first weekend of June to the last of May, and due to too much reading and too little sleep, I was confused earlier on.

Yep, the DURC PR60 .22 TR Open at MNSCI is in the diary for the 29th May, as far I recall (unless DURC have had this moved).

The next .22 TR event in MNSCI is a MNSCI PR60 .22 TR Open on 3rd April, if my memory serves me right.

This looks like it is going to be interesting,, and since I have been away the club has done some amazing work on the range,,,, See you all there,,,
    Nicholas

Conditions would seem to be pretty good

Mostly dry tomorrow but continuing misty in places for a time. Rather cloudy in general, though some bright or sunny spells will develop at times in places, with the best of these likely in eastern parts. Highest temperatures will range from 6 to 8 degrees in just light variable or southerly breezes.
