    Would you not just do it for a fiver? How does it cost you any money to remove the clamp? Replacing one form of explotation with another?

    Time = money

    It's hardly exploitation, he isn't forcing anyone to use his declamping services. If it is too expensive people won't pay for it and he will either have to lower his prices or not give the service anymore.

    Why don't you just do it for a fiver?

    because my jeep wont get from leixlip to maynooth for a fiver. Diesels expensive, also socket sets and other tools are expensive. As irish_goat said, im not forcing anybody to pay , APCOA are , Im offering a discount, and if somebody comes along and wants to do it for 20 euro , or 10 euro or a 5er then well done to them, the wonders of capitalism and the open market, competition is all above board

    I think he's just filling a gap in the market. What do you do with the clamp though? Just leave it on the ground?

    Ah that auld chesnut. If they clamped my non-existent car I'd get the tools needed from whomever, detach the clamp, carry it to the President's car and reattach it there. I wouldn't pay anyone a penny, either a clamper or someone who thinks they can make a quick buck of this either. Students should just refuse to pay, the legality of it is dodgy and it's just plain wrong.

    Does anyone know why it's so hard to just make a hard-fast law and keep to it instead of having this grey area?

    it would be 10x easier to make private clamping illegal rather than legal, so the clamping companies are staying quiet and are happy to live in the grey area so they can avoid the possibility of their business becoming illegal or worse - regulated

    The tools from whomever? Why would/should anyone give you tools without some sort of compensation on their part?

    Regardless, even if you have a friend with clamp removing tools who'll lend you them for free a lot of other students do not. Therefore there are 2 options, pay the release fee or pay someone else to release the clamp at a cheaper cost. However wrong the fine may be refusing to pay isn't going to get you the use of your car back.

    Are you taking the piss? I don't know with you anymore to be honest. I call the person I get the tools from Dad. What do you call him? :D

    And a campaign led by the SU against clamping or parking charges will mean no one has to pay. If we all just point blank refuse to pay then what will they do? Awaits, "ah but you can't do that argument".

    Not everyone's Dad lives within easy distance of Maynooth.

    No, but your point was ridiculous. Tools are something people lend to each other, without compensation, all the time. Anyway, this isn't a relevant discussion. The discussion should be about how the clampers are to be fecked off campus and all parking charges reversed.

    It would probably work, but who is willing to leave their clamped car parked at NUIM for a number of days?

    I'm not necessarily in favour of clamping here, but the number of people driving to NUIM is too high so there needs to be some sort of charge on it.

    Ill agree the clampers should not be there and a campaign to remove them should be started by the SU , in the mean time though - im going to go piss off apcoa and make some money

    Have you removed clamps from any cars before, and if so was anything said? Or is this the first time you tried this?

    they cant do anything, cut it off and keep it as a souvenier, but if you're going to pay the fine at least glue the lock so the rats have to cut their own clamp.
