Not a great game but a great result. First half was dire from Galway and Monaghan should have gone in three points clear and well on top. Instead Kelly loses his rag and ultimately hands the game to Galway. Their current system may fall short in the summer but it'd take a truly exceptional 14 man side to get much against a 15 man Galway with the way they set up. Monaghan are good, very good at times, but they don't have the forwards to overcome those odds. The goal put a more respectable look on the scoreboard but Galway were far the better team after half time.

Big call to take Walsh off so early but he responded well to having his place threatened last year so hopefully his form improves after today.

This is all very harsh on SWalsh.

On another day he'd have scored every shot he missed. He does it with his club regularly. A couple of off days with shooting doesn't make him a selfish player.

I think he'll make a lot of people eat their words yet.

It's not harsh when he has been wasteful for Galway a hell of a lot over the years. Last year he was brilliant against Kildare in salthill. Did the simple things well. A week later he was taking shots on the run from the sideline off both feet and missing. He needs to use his speed and ability to beat his man, draw another man and release someone else.

Hurlers are flying it considering the Christmas they would have had. Barely a ball picked since November I'd say but looking quite slick.

He'll come good yet, I'd be surprised if he doesn't.

All 3 you mentioned there were good today, and Kerin in particular has probably been the best defender in D1 this year and marked J'OD out of it on his last visit to Croker. Wouldnt have too many worries about him...

Not so sure on that we'll wait and see.

    Silke will possibly come in.

What other Corofin players are likely to come into the team?

McAllister made some mess of that.

Nasty stroke which could ruin a lad.

    Red all day long.

Burke is a better option than Sweeney up front but so is Daly. Molloy and wall good options as subs. Don't want to see too many from one club on any panel. It can unbalance a squad if one player from that club has a grievance.

Jason Flynn is the hurling equivalent of Shane Walsh. An unbelievable talent that takes a lot of silly decisions which end up ruining his impact on a game.

Beginning to have doubts that Shane Walsh will ever fulfill his potential. Huge natural talent but his decision making is verging on the woeful. I thought he would sort it out with experience but I'm not so sure now.

    Utter utter garbage.

For the AI champions to come out at HT, 8 points up and play like that is embarrasing.

    4 point second half?... awful.

Couldnt win a ball in the second half and Limerick forwards were winning everything.

To make it worse Limerick were atrocious in the first half and they still managed to win.

To only score 4 points in the 2nd half is brutal.

Somehow if feel they wont be too bothered about playing in division 1b again next year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,032 ✭✭✭✭Utopia Parkway

Poor game to lose after building a big lead but you could see that the Galway players were not putting in half the effort Limerick were. One team really wanted that win today and I kinda feel Galway would have liked to win but it didn't massively bother them either way. So the right team won in the end.

For Galway it's all about being ready for May and beyond now.

So, am I right in saying it’s Galway v Wexford next Sunday ?

Where abouts would that be played ?

This time last year after Galway lost to Wexford you classed them as "a second rate side" I'd take your knowledge of GAA with a pinch of salt.

Ahhh thanks for remembering my old posts hun thats cute.

Can't say i remember anything you posted last year though.

Ya because Wexford proved themselves to be above a second rate team since then?... lol.

I'd take your knowledge with a pinch of salt so as they're not contenders so they're second rate.

Let me know if you remember any other things i said last year... i like to reminisce.

Wexford at home because we had 3 home games and Wexford had only 2. Limerick far hungrier for the fight in the 2nd half. Cleaned out all over the field really, lost all the skirmishes. This game was always going to mean more to them but there were worrying signs in our full back line all day, Daithi Burke can't come back soon enough. Similarly our inability to win ball in the half forward line when the game got tight was worrying. Need to see Joseph Cooney return, be good to see Thomas Monaghan back too to give us another option. Davy Glennon and Shane Maloney not quite up to it imo.

This is the sort of game that if we'd lost any other year there'd have been war in Galway hurling circles but defeat could be a blessing in disguise, we needed a proper game and to have some of our frailties exposed. We'd sleep-walked our way through the league so far. It'd be nice to get to the semi-finals of the league so we can get our full team back on the pitch before championship but Wexford will be pumped up for that one next Sunday so we need some kind of reaction if we are to give ourselves a chance.

Footballers came through strongly in the 2nd half. The 1st half was tough to watch but after the sending off space opened up and we ran out comfortable enough winners. Be good for these lads to get a game in Croke Park against the Dubs. They are putting Kerry to the sword today which shows what a challenge that game will be to even keep it respectable but for the moment some positive signs.

Fair play to the footballers today.a lot of work still to do but got the job done at the end of the day all be it with a bit of help from Monaghan.not giant killers yet but all the time improving.
The hurlers.hard to know what to say.an awful lot of bad decisions made on the pitch and a skite of wides in both half’s.some of the shots from play in the first half especially were bordering on rediculous and looked half hearted.still though they have plenty of time yet to improve with the year they have had but still looking keen

Fairplay to Limerick because they were the better side and could have been a lot more comfortable if they didn't hit 10 wides in the first half. I don't mind losing but there was no fight whatsoever from the hurlers in that second half. Whelan, Cooney, Niall Burke, Flynn, Maloney and Cathal Mannion (who had a fantastic first half) were easily dealt with. In particular it was Whelan's worst showing in a Galway jersey so far.

Distribution in the second half was terrible too and lads like Harte were gifting Limerick scores. Puckouts were all conceded to Limerick and lads stood off all day long.

They couldn't even rise the ball in the second half. Just absolutely gutless stuff to let Limerick come back from an 8 point deficit. But look, if that's the last of the poor performances out of the way for the year we'll forget all about it. Not confident about going to Wexford next week.

Very long time since the footballers bettered their hurling counterparts. Thought that Comer was absolutely brilliant and was a proper leader out there. Varley rallied home the result with a couple of super scores, McHugh was everywhere defending, Kyne was immense in the second half and Cathal Sweeney much improved after half time.

Shane Walsh only sees his name in the limelight and he'll never get to a stage where he'll grow out of it and look for a man in on goal when he can blast a point over the bar. When it goes right people rave about him getting into any team in the country (load of ****e) but on days like today where he misses nearly everything you tear your hair out. Kevin Walsh got dog's abuse before for having him on the bench but you can see the reasoning on days like today. We're in a much better position now where you could bring on a Varley/Army/Ian Burke/Daly when Walsh is bombing wides and immediately improve the attack. I certainly wouldn't write him off but he's had a few poor games so far in 2018 but definitely could turn it all around.

Hurling was a real game of two halves. Fairly slick and hitting scores for fun in the first to barely able to strike the ball in the second. Looked like a team happy enough in division 1b and handy route to the knockout in the league. Hope they don't think they can turn it on like a switch though.

The litmus test next out for the footballers. Be interesting to see what's going to happen just conceding the possession to Dublin and filtering back. Didn't work out too well for Tyrone last year. Attacking them like Kerry did today didn't work out too well either though.

Lads I think we need to ease up a bit on the harsh words . Our hurlers are all Ireland champs and lost there first game in a year today . In all honesty’ don’t think there over bothered. It’s probaly easier to be in 1 b . Our footballers are in a league one final after 5 wins outta 5 . 2 months ago the Aim was survival . Defo looks to be improving and long may it continue . And these guys are amateurs who pretty much put there life on hold to wear the maroon and white and represent us . So let’s back them from hear on and be positive rather then negative

Exactly.well said.footballers have improved 40 times over the last year and the hurlers only back since an All Ireland win and well deserved celebration and rest.expectations from some people are unbelievable.plenty of time yet and they are both headed in the right direction

Looking forward to the football final. Long time since Dublin and Galway played in a final - we won't mention the last one!

I said previously that I thought Walsh was trying out something a bit different that could yield results when he was being castigated. Well, he has been vindicated so far.

Be interesting to see what tactics are deployed in final - next week will be akin to a challenge match I would say. No-one has really tried to go toe to toe with Dublin on long ball, and Galway have the firepower to utilise possession more efficiently than vast majority of teams.

Dublin need to win next week to guarantee a place in final. If they lose, they have to go away to Monaghan in the last game to win to get to the final. I don't think Dublin will want to be in that position. Therefore, I suspect Dublin will play a strong team next week.
