Week 8? It's a nice night here though a tad breezy. Hopefully we'll all have a few more than last week. Nothing yet here.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,498 ✭✭✭Mothman

Tonight may be first frost free night here in a week. Could well be a lot of new species here in morning with a lot of very early emergences. I suppose I'll have a look now :)

EDIT, not a huge amount happening, but I predict about 30 species in morning.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 70 ✭✭Gardener3

Even less happening here - just been out to check and there's a Small Phoenix and a Puss Moth on the sheet and not another sign of a moth to be seen.

A quiet night and a quick morning methinks :(

Very quick. I Had just 3 Hebrew Characters:(.

It ended up being a lot cooler here than I thought it would be.

The site I'd chosen for GMS trapping was in a windy part of the garden last night so species numbers were down from the 20+ I've had most of the last week.
:) The Dark Spectacle was new for the year, bringing species so far to 80.

    1759 Small Phoenix 1
    1902 Brown Silver-line 1
    1920 Scalloped Hazel 1
    2187 Common Quaker 4
    2188 Clouded Drab 10
    2190 Hebrew Character 13
    2243 Early Grey 1
    2449 Dark Spectacle 1

    Brindled Pug
    Dark-barred Twin-spot Carpet
    Early Tooth-striped

In fact exactly 30 species :D, I missed an Early Tooth-striped...

Decided not to count the Puss Moth as I'd trapped one the previous night which was still in the trap when I set up. I liberated it closer to the GMS site than I meant to so wasn't sure that the one on the sheet wasn't the same individual!

Sum total of 3 moths here; Cold and windy with a heavy shower at some stage as the egg cartons were wet this morning.
    Brimstone x 1
    Common quaker x 1
    Hebrew character x 1

For anyone who's interested there's a great photo of the detail on an Emperor Moths wing on the Irish Wildlife Trust facebook page.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,832 ✭✭✭littlebug

I can now add Puss Moth to my "moths I've seen" list, though not in my garden and it was a bit squashed and dead :(

Had the 1st Emperor moth I've seen here last night at the back door. A female I think.
The bad news is that after i moved it away from the house and the damn cats, it came back and when i saw it later, one of it's wings was damaged. I put it out in the field but didn't hold out too much for it safety.:(

Left the moth trap out all night, 9pm to 5:30 am and only got 3 Hebrew Characters, 1 Common Quaker and 1 Cockshafer for my efforts:(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,832 ✭✭✭littlebug

I'm having a go again tonight. It's a bit cloudier than Friday anyway and the heat of the last few days may have helped. It can't get any worse anyway :D

Alright, you've twisted my arm, trap is going on again for a few hours tonight;)

It's cold here, trap is off, but it is surprising what can turn up on the unlikely nights

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,832 ✭✭✭littlebug

I've been keeping half an eye on the trap while I work and it looks like it'll be another quick count in the morning. I'll just put it down to a seasonal lull...

I wasn't going to trap tonight as I've got to go to Cork early tomorrow but then the wind dropped for the first time in days so out it went!

Damp and a bit muggy, recorded from the sheet so far are:

    Water Carpet
    Least Dark Arches
    Brindled Pug
    Small Phoenix
    Double-striped Pug
    Hebrew Character
    Brimstone (new for year)
    Dark-barred Twin-spot Carpet
    Lunar Marbled Brown
    Powdered Quaker
Clouded Silver - very pretty, new one for me
plus a couple of micro's and pugs potted for ID tomorrow.

No idea what's in the trap!

I had 7 Hebrew Characters, 1 muslin moth, 1 powdered quaker and a cockshafer.
I also something much larger than any of the above briefly inspect the trap and move on :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,319 ✭✭✭Half-cocked

1 Common Quaker and an earwig:mad:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 70 ✭✭Gardener3

:) I checked the trap when I got back from Cork - 115 moths of 34 species!

New for me were 5 Clouded Silver's and 2 Muslin Moth's, plus a possible Turnip and a couple of new micro's.

New for the year were Poplar Hawk-moth, Brimstone, Flame Shoulder and Scalloped Hook-tip - I love the curve of those wings!

    Oops :o
What kind of setting is your trap in H-c?
There are street lights to the front of my house and another a stones throw to one side. None of these shine directly into my back garden but obviously would be clearly seen by anything flying over. I also noticed last night that next door had their outside lights on too. I assume all of this will have an impact?

I'm in an urban area but the back garden is reasonably secluded. No lights next door. I was getting good catches last year, maybe I'm in a bad early season area.

;) Here goes, and Mothman will correct me if I'm wrong!

    1. looks like Powdered Quaker
    3. doesn't look right for Early Grey but not sure which it is
    5. "2 of the following (on the feft), don't know the name" - top left looks like Red Chestnut
    6. Red Chestnut
    7. Possibly Ringed Carpet
    8. Dark-barred Twin-spot Carpet

I think you're spot on with all with the bottom left of 5 also a Red Chestnut.

Any other views of what you thought may be Early Grey? It's a difficult angle to work with.

Also it would be useful to know your location and habitat nearby.

Coming back to this, i suspect that #3 is Glaucous Shears, but would like to see other pics and hear of habitat.

Hi, put the trap out this evening and got another of #3 and took some photos. Hopefully they are good enough. He did fly off and landed above the light in the kitchen and that is the first photo.

Habitat: Rural West Donegal, boggy land right up to the lawn. Rush, Heather etc. I am attempting to grow trees, the usual apple, alder, ash, hawthorn, sycamore, fuschia and a few others. Have, or rather had, lots of hedging & shrubs.

EDIT: Well done Mothman, just googled "Glaucous Shears" and thats it. Forgot to mention that I have also planted about 40 willow behind the house.
