    How do you mean?

If it says it's a Nikon mount, then it's compatible

Yeah, that looks good. Seller has 100% positive feedback too!

Them bids will go up a good bit before the end of the listing

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,983 ✭✭✭Tea_Bag

thanks man. I dont know enough about it. i see some listed as D3000 and D5000 compatible, so i wasnt sure if they all had the same mount.

How much is it worth in your eyes?

I see it here for £90 new.

Some could be for full frame cameras, but I imagine they would be substantially more money, so you'll know they won't fit her camera

As I said previously, in and around €100 is good value. If it's in good condition, I'd pay more

That lens will work but there will be no auto focus. Not a problem if she's experienced but something to be aware of.
To have something fully compatible you need an AF-S lens.
Sorry to confuse you even more but for the classic "nifty fifty" on a D40 cropped sensor you need a 35mm lens.

You need to have a discreet look in her camera bag to check what she's got. Maybe a tripod or a monopod might be an idea?

Tripod would be a much better option. Assuming she doesn't have one

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,983 ✭✭✭Tea_Bag

I got her a cheap tripod from lidl when they had them reduced to €5. its a piece of ****, but i think it'll do the job alright for a while.

looking up nikon 35mm brings up things that are a whole lot more expensive :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,983 ✭✭✭Tea_Bag

is this what im looking for? it doesnt explicitly say "AF-S".

  • Registered Users Posts: 255 ✭✭vic20

Is that one of the little silvery tripods that would sit in the palm of your hand? It'll take the weight of a point & shoot but not her D40.

    really? :(

its short yea but extends to full size from the ground to chest height.

    any other suggestions?

    what about lighting?

  • Registered Users Posts: 255 ✭✭vic20

Again, no auto focus. It's a wide angle lens.

Not the one I'm thinking of so if it's that tall.

Does she have a flash already?

nope no flash. would it be better to get a flash than a fifty?

thanks everyone for the help so far.

this says AF. is that the same as AF-S?

  • Registered Users Posts: 255 ✭✭vic20

That lens is manual focus only (and UK delivery only) dunno where you're located...
AF & AF-S are two different things.
I think you would be better off getting something non camera specific. The D40 is getting on a bit now and what would happen if she's planning on selling it/trading it in for something else and you've just bought her something for it...?

Tripod, monopod, camera bag, that sort of thing...
Anyone else care to voice their opinions?

    Some stunning photos here.

edit: seems that a smiley face is stuck in the middle of the URL, "home: page=1" I don't want to come across as if I was messing considering the photos of the website.
    edit_2: fixed it

I'm selling my Pentax K-7, put ads up on adverts, amazon, donedeal, craiglist etc.

Got 2 people interested in it today....said we could meet in person, where do you live....."is for my daughter working abroad, africa. nigeria, and i will add postage fees to it"

Think I might 'play' along with them for a while. My reply-
    Hi,

My cousin is contract working in Africa and is home often. Where is your daughter working, they could meet up and she could see if she likes the handling etc. of the camera.

Where are you living? We could meet up for payment then.

I find the whole Nikon vs. Canon feud a bit boring myself. I have friends who argue about which of their systems is better until the cows come home. Brand makes no difference to the images they produce.
